There's something that really gets me about how the Torah is alive. A Torah scroll is buried when it's destroyed and can't be salvaged. People are as careful holding a Torah scroll as they are holding a baby. We dress our Torah scrolls in adorned cases or decorated robes. We celebrate it every year like it's its birthday. And the words of the Torah themselves are also alive. We constantly reread and recontextualize and reinterpret the Torah. The Torah is as alive as the Jewish people are.
hot opinion from me as christmas and hanukkah fall on the same day this year — coming from an american jew
american jews celebrating christmas in their own way doesn’t make them less jewish ,, and just because YOU have negative associations with christianity with christmas doesn’t mean every jew does
for as much as jews on here say christmas can’t be secular to an extent i agree but y’all are forgetting the fact many american jews observe christmas in a secular way — when an american jew celebrates christmas it’s often celebrating they get time off to be with their families,, that’s what their celebrating
not the birth of christ, or anything to do with christianity itself
just being able to spend time with family without the looming stress of work or school and to have a few days to just laze around
and for jews who’s family are interfaith — they practice christmas and hanukkah together and celebrate the love between them as a family under different faiths yet united
a jew is a jew — just because a jew practices differently from you don’t mean their less of a jew, y’all seriously need to get your act together cause this is just disappointing
tdlr; stop shaming american jews for liking or celebrating christmas, stop shaming interfaith jewish families for celebrating both hanukkah & christmas and y’all need to understand christmas can be celebrated in a secular way
People will really be like "citizens aren't their governments and don't deserve to be punished for the actions of extremist politicians— unless it's a country that I personally don't like, then every citizen deserves to be tortured and murdered 🥰"
I know these protestors don’t give a rat’s ass about Palestinians. I knew this since Oct. 7th, but I feel recent happenings help put the nail in the coffin.
Sinwar is dead. And these people celebrate him as a hero, a warrior, and a leader in “the cause”.
This man was nicknamed the “butcher of Khan Younis”. Over many years, he’s been killing Palestinians on suspicion of colluding against Hamas. In 2019, Palestinians marched in the “We Want to Live” Gaza protest against Hamas’ rule. Sinwar helped lead the security crackdown on these protestors. They spray-fired into the crowd, killing several people. They rounded up most others and tortured them for going against Hamas.
No one cared about them then. And no one cares about them now. You didn’t care when Palestinians were fighting for their lives against Hamas in 2019. And now, you celebrate a man as a war hero who was known to torture and slaughter Palestinians.
This fake activist shit in the west is getting old.
The Tanach writing Moses as having a bad stutter from burning his mouth as a baby and needing his brother Aaron to come with him to talk to the Pharaoh and still not being questioned once as God's prophet has done more for Jewish disability rep than 95% of current media.
Meme #1: In the beginning of the story, Pharaoh kills the male Hebrew babies by throwing them in the Nile. However, many scholars have pointed out that it would have been more effective to kill the women and not the men, especially since the men were used for labor.
Meme #2: Moses asks Pharaoh to "let my people go!"
Meme #3: Pharaoh refuses to release the Hebrew slaves.
Meme #4: Pharaoh kept agreeing to let the Jews worship in the wilderness (which they would have used to escape), but repeatedly changed his mind at the last minute.
Meme #5: as above
Meme #6: in Exodus, the word used for frog is singular. So although the plague is frogs and probably referred to massive amounts of frogs leaving the Nile, there's an argument that it was a single, giant frog. A Godzilla/Kaiju frog.
Meme #7: Pharaoh refused to allow Jews to leave for the first nine plagues. He relented after the ten plague, the death of all Egyptian firstborns, including the animals.
Meme #8: Hashem, literally "the name," is a title for G_d. Traditionally, Jews don't write out the actual name of G_d because it's disrespectful. G_d protected the Jews from Pharaoh.
Meme #9: after Jews escaped to the desert, Moses went up a mountain to talk to G_d for forty days, during which he received the Torah. The Jews left behind were worried that G_d had forgotten them, and built a golden calf to worship. G_d was pissed and forced Jews to remain in the desert for 40 years.
Meme #10: The song "The Plagues" from the movie Prince of Egypt is incredibly catchy and will get stuck in your head
I mean I'm not complaining, I was quite proud of myself when I made this, but this post is 2 and a half years old and originally had like 3 notes. What HAPPENED today?
"you shouldn't be antisemetic because you're legitimising Israel when you do" no you shouldn't be antisemetic because it hurts Jews who deserve to not be hurt, like any other human being. you should care about not being antisemetic because it hurts people, and that should be enough for you. why isn't it enough for you?
Funny how all of these “antizionist-not-antisemitic” types have had ample opportunity to make a statement about the huge surge in violent attacks against jews—which i have posted about since october—but they haven’t. For some reason.
As a 3rd autistic jew, I agree with both, but *Also* passover is the best holiday because as long as I can reapply a special interest to the pesach story I can talk about it whenever
But its the Worst holiday because there is mandatory cleaning with a deadline before
As a 4th autistic jew I think there are merits to many of these points but wanted to bring up that the food is basically the same every year, which is really nice and predictable
But passover also sucks because you’re expected to read with people watching you
