THIRTY-ONE DAYS OF JIEJIE(LY) — day twenty with bonus baby a-ling !
Jiang Cheng is the picture of “I knew from the moment I met you that I’d spend a lifetime forgiving you.”
Like—start with the dogs. The only gift his father ever gave him, and Jiang Cheng gave them away. Why? Because Wei Wuxian was scared of them. That’s it. No resistance. No conflict. Just: oh, you’re afraid? They’re gone.
That is the blueprint. That is the foundational dynamic. That is the relationship.
His father resents him, prefers his shixiong. His mother tears him down for not being his shixiong. His sister, bless her, loves both of them—but it’s Wei Wuxian who gets the hand on the shoulder, the soft words, the shared wine. And yet. Jiang Cheng never once chooses bitterness over devotion.
He loves him. That’s the tragedy. That’s the rot. Because he never stops.
Wei Wuxian gets dragged into the Burial Mounds and comes back fundamentally altered, and Jiang Cheng still believes in him. Still gives him room to return. Still duels him instead of executing him outright, still spares him even when the sect is watching. Still tells Jin Ling to be kind to him. Still keeps Chenqing in perfect condition, like a grave he refuses to let crumble. Even when Wei Wuxian’s choices leave him hollowed out. Even when all he has left is silence. He still carries him.
And the thing is—Jiang Cheng’s sacrifices are quiet. He never says them. But we know. We know that when he was captured by the Wens, he let himself be caught. On purpose. Because if he didn’t distract them, Wei Wuxian would’ve died.
We know that when Wei Wuxian said, “I can fix this,” Jiang Cheng believed him with his whole heart. And when Wei Wuxian smiled that soft, golden smile, and said “Don’t worry,” Jiang Cheng didn’t. Because when your entire world is falling apart, and your brilliant, impossible shixiong tells you he has a plan—you believe him. That’s what love is.
And when he disappeared? When he died?
Jiang Cheng never believed it.
He said there was no proof. But it always read like something else to me. Like: “I’d know if he was gone. I’d feel it. He’s part of me. I would know.”
This man spent years believing he murdered the person he loved most in the world. And he still couldn’t bring himself to throw the flute away.
Tell me that’s not love. Tell me that’s not the worst kind. The kind that doesn’t die even when it should.
the sun and moon imagery. the concept of having to know that they outshine you in every single aspect you have ever strived to be good at, but still being adored by them so deeply that they see you as the sun itself.
constantly living in the sun's shadow. only when the sun sets will the moon rise. both do not appear at the same time. the sun chasing the moon, in a never-ending cycle. (until one day, when it finally does.)
the golden retriever and the black cat. the fluffy child, loyal to a fault, and the plain soul dressed in black, just wishing to be left alone.
the mutual destruction. their greatest pain and hurt being each other, but in different ways. but yet still willing to sacrifice their life to save each other. "i hate you, but i'd also die for you."
And in MXTX-related news, this is as sweet as it is incredibly cruel! Ow, my heart!
Bishy, could we have a drawing/doodle of Ouyang Zizhen? I would love to see my boy in your style 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
protect him at all costs
just getting through the week
Someone needs to study why everyone who meets Xiao Xingchen becomes permanently obsessed with him.
A-Qing knew him for about five minutes and was like, yeah I’m gonna follow him around for the rest of my life.
Song Lan is more subtle about this, but I want people to remember that they knew each other for only about a year, max two years. And after their parting he spent his whole time searching for Xiao Xingchen and now will spend the rest of his life trying to heal his soul. He’s a little more stable about it, I would say, but still.
And then Xue Yang, I don’t think that needs any explanation.
Laying in bed thinking about Jiang Cheng again. Do you think he ever appointed a second in command? Did he instead delegate to more than one person or take on all those tasks himself? After how catastrophically things went with Wei Wuxian - heck, after even Wei Changze married out of the sect - his faith in being able to rely on other people for that kind of support was probably shattered. Just thinking about young Sect Leader Jiang building his sect up even more alone than he should be because he can't bear to put faith in anyone else ever again, raising Jin Ling as he goes, and all his loyal sect members doing everything they can to be better than WWX was to him without alerting him to the fact that that is what they are doing. Anyway, the Jiang Sect man. They make me feel things.
yin yu's name meaning attracting jade. part of a phrase 「拋磚引玉」 (pāo zhuān yǐn yù) - literally to toss a brick to attract jade - actual meaning "to offer one's own relatively worthless words, opinions, or services in order to attract others' more valuable contributions."
and the jade in question? quan yizhen.
yin yu is an unfortunate case of nominative determinism in which he was doomed by the narrative since the very beginning.
The silliesssss ❤️💚💜
thinking about obedient mild-mannered waning moon officer yin yu knocking out martial god of the west quan yizhen with a shovel never fails to make me giggle
