I've been to prison, I am a trans woman though I was pre transition, considering my androgynous nature because of being intersex, I did have a target on my back.
Their experience may be decent right now, but prison culture is different prison to prison and state to state, fed to state as well
Acting as though violence at the hands of other prisoners isn't a problem ( it definitely was during my time, at least initially before I earned my stripes)
This being said, absolutely correct the majority of those in prison are people falsely convicted, or who had drugs planted on them.
I'd argue our legal system doesn't provide adequate defense for anyone outside of the wealthy
Prison is not a fun place to be, what you're describing is a form of camaraderie, and at different prisons I experienced different forms of this, some prisons truly are " gladiator schools" and a lot of prisons are quite bigoted. In small ways though, infact queer acceptance in prison had made leaps since the 1990s, and trans acceptance is only slightly lagging behind.
I got out of prison Feb 5th last year, I will say though that yes guards are absolutely the most violent people in prisons, they're downright evil a majority of the time. Rare that I ever saw them do good. Though there are two examples from Osceola unit RPF. That genuinely only had the job because that town is barren, one of which was a trans woman herself.
This all being said, please don't pretend we don't get V coded, that bad things don't happen to us. Your security level, where in the country you are ( I was in Arkansas which was much more violently homophobic and transphobic than say, up north or rikers)
As for preparing for the possibility of being arrested, yeah we should all be thinking of it that's for sure.
I've also been raided by police, as well as pulled out of a car given a broken rib, as they ransacked the vehicle.
I digress, this issue isn't black and white. Outside bigotry definitely reflect inside prisons but magnified
And at that, yes there's racial stereotypez around prisoners but to sit and pretend thats the only reason folks talk about the violence within, or they talk Abt bigotry is actually laughable. Prisons are very multiracial I did time with people from more ethnicities than you can imagine in varying degrees, especially at Cummins unit.
Much love, but please, if you want to actually understand prisons. Don't just listen to this post, talk to people like me. Please. Thank you.
