Honestly, I kind of wonder how many people stopped writing because a mixed cast of whoever had been on Toonami in the past few years interrupted their fic every five lines to talk about how terrible it was.

Man, do you guys remember Fanfic Fridays? There was some website that would post the worst fanfic they could find on Friday, mostly fetish stuff. It was funny at the time, but now I kinda regret mocking someone's first nsfw fic.

And then the website owner said he found an even worse story, referred to it as “the Other Story”? Then peer pressure made the owner post it, and it’s a Dragon Ball fanfic with an extremely detailed description of an abortion?

Details:

Showa Era covers the first six doctors and all but the last season of Sylvester McCoy. So this would include the horrors of late 80s Doctor Who, but not Fenric.

Heisei Era covers the last McCoy season (26) all the way up to the Whittaker's first series. So stuff like the events of Timeless Children are not included here.

One one hand, the famous Doctor Who Kick (ドクタァァァ キック) is introduced in the Showa Era by Pertwee's Doctor V3. The era also includes the high-octane fury of Jameson's Companion Amazon and the always formidable Baker's Doctor Multicolor. Plenty of timeless classics in here.

On the other hand, although the Heisei Era includes the Great Hiatus, it has perhaps the strongest companion, Companion Decade (Coleman) whose plot activities alone could be said to split the era into two phases ("Limited regenerations" and "Limitless regenerations"). Doctor Kuuga (Eccleston) starts the era with such force, and who could forget the massive crossover event Heisei Doctor vs Showa Doctor: The Great Gallifreyan War feat. Bad Wolf? That one aired in cinemas worldwide!

But specifically... I just hate how Windows 10 tries to conflate and confuse web searches with things on one's own computer. The start menu should never do anything related to web-searching, especially if it purports to try to give examples of things that are on my hard drive!

This will make old, computer-illiterate people more malware-vulnerable. You have to maintain a strong distinction between "things that are on this computer (and maybe even included in Windows)" (safe, one hopes, or you already got pwned by it, probably), and "things on the web" (scary, dangerous, not to be trusted at all).

Eroding that barrier in the UI is awful. It just FEELS like a violation every time I start typing into the start bar, and it tries to show me ANYTHING web-related. My computer is NOT just an internet-portal! It has tons of stuff on it, and when I'm interacting with the OS, I ONLY want to see things that are already on here!

If I wanted to see something online, I would go to my browser! All the online stuff should be segregated into the browser!

Specific programs can access the internet; that's fine. But my OS's functions and interface should JUST be about the things that are already on my computer.

With one click, this will remove ALL THE BLOATWARE Windows comes with. Seriously, you need NONE OF THESE apps, and if you do, you can just uninstall all the ones you don't need individually.

Winaero Tweaker

This program will give you almost complete control over Windows 10's behavior. Disabling the web search in the start menu, op rightfully complained about, is just one of the many things this thing can do

For example, with a single setting you can turn off any ads from microsoft, system-wide

It is a powerful tool, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily every single setting comes with an explanation about what it actually does, and most settings can be easily reversed.

are there dumb discredited medical theories in TCM like the idea of 'miasma theory' for current western medicine? Looking things up on Google doesn't really help, as it seems from the perspective of western medicine the WHOLE of TCM is 'discredited mumbo-jumbo'

Well some version of miasma theory was used repeatedly through history and in multiple cultures and seems to have been how people tried to explain how diseases seemed to spread without direct contact, because they didn’t have the ability to see viruses and bacteria under microscopes. It’s not really “dumb” from that perspective, just uninformed compared to now. A lot of TCM theory kind of sounds like that to western skeptics, who scoff at it because TCM still uses most of the older terminology from texts written at a time when people could observe the *effects* of disease while not necessarily knowing the causes. Like we still talk about catching a cold as a “wind invasion” or “cold invasion” because thousands of years ago TCM doctors observed that people, all living before central heating, generally caught respiratory viruses more often in cold weather, and especially after being out in the elements without being adequately covered, so the wind or the cold had “invaded” your body, causing symptoms. Modern TCM practitioners obviously understand germ theory, but there’s not the same expectation that you should throw out thousands of years of formulas and acupuncture point prescriptions which still work and are based on these theories, because now we have a better understanding of how the human body and disease transmission works. (Though I’ll also add that there are certain ways in which modern western medicine still seems to be catching up with TCM, the recent “discovery” of the interstitium is a big example, but I’m getting really off track) 

But like, to finally get to the point, there’s definitely stuff under the umbrella of TCM that’s been more or less popular at different times and places, and because it’s such a long tradition not everything has been preserved, and not everything used hundreds of years ago is used now, and there are books that have been written on the “warm” school of disease versus the “cold” school, etc. but I can’t think of any *big* overarching theory that was completely discredited and replaced. There’s also not the same expectation that new discoveries will revolutionize and completely change the course of the medicine, but that new information should be added to the existing body of knowledge, and build on the work of people who came before you.

Yeah, I assumed wrongly TCM also goes in ‘paradigms’, similar to how western medicine moved from four humours to miasma to germ theory of today.

Regarding the ‘wind invasion’ thing, the Indonesian word for catching the common cold is “masuk angin”, literally “enter wind”, so I guess for traditional Indonesians the concept of ‘wind goes in you making you feel unwell’ is also a thing. I wonder if other Asian languages also use this concept of ‘wind invasion’.

Just as trivia, a traditional treatment for ‘masuk angin’ is the ‘kerok’, using the broad side of a coin (or a spoon) to scratch the back, creating long red streaks, which ‘lets the wind out’ by making the person undergoing the treatment burps a lot.

I think Captain Underpants was on the banned books because of the all the intentional misspellings of words and well, the fact that one of the protag ran around in underwear. They’d probably be banned even more now, considering the events on the final book.

So my mum came with me to Australia and while she was watching cooking (and property) shows in English, I had to translate the gist of the show and the dialogues into Indonesian, her native language. I had a hard time doing this, and this makes me think: if I can't translate L2 to L1 at a near-conversational speed, am I truly fluent in L2?

if you’re truly “fluent” in both languages and simultaneous interpreting isn’t something you have a lot of experience doing (i.e. it’s your job), then no, that’s no indication of you lacking abilities in either language. i feel like my active english vocabulary has shrunk dramatically since i haven’t been speaking it all that much lately, and whenever i talk to my mum i find myself constantly struggling to find the right words, but that doesn’t mean i’m not fluent in my native language (i hope?)

I wonder if, from long enough non-usage, a person can lose fluency in their native language. I’ve been using mostly English in daily life for about a third of my speaking years, and it had had a horrible effect on my native language.
