I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm Hispanic (thanks to my mum). I don't take after my mother, who is probably the whitest looking Mexican woman most people will ever meet. I live in an area where ICE raids have been happening. I don't leave my apartment without a copy of my passport on my person. I have phone numbers memorised in case something the worst happens because we all know that ICE doesn't actually care who's a citizen and who isn't; they just look at skin colour and go from there.

This is the reality that I live with as a brown person in America in 2025.

And yet, even with this as my reality, you know what I'm not? I'm not Anne Frank.

When I see posts or posters with things like "somewhere, there's a young Hispanic girl hiding in an attic writing a diary" - being held by gringos no less? I'm filled with the kind of grief that's half a breath from rage. Grief that Anne Frank's story can't be her story and simmering rage that the story of our tragedy - of Jewish tragedy - isn't allowed to stand on its own. The fact that gringos are all too happy to use my people - Hispanics and Latine folks - as a way to diminish Jewish grief is what pushes that simmer all the way into a blistering fury.

You can support those being targeted by ICE and this administration without co-opting Jewish stories or diminishing Jewish grief. Jews are not a prop. Neither are immigrants, brown people, or other groups who are currently in the crosshairs.

No one with an ounce of intelligence is comparing it to what they went through, they're comparing it to how it started. And there has already been escalation because the writing is on the wall in big bright neon letters and we might not be there yet but that's where it's headed, escalation is already happening and if we aren't careful that's the point we're going to get to.

So no there's not a Hispanic girl in an attic writing a diary, but there was a Somali woman in an attic in active labor hiding from ICE because they aren't against taking people in active medical situations into custody even if it could put their life in danger. And if people really feel the need to compare, I'd say that's comparable. Even if comparing suffering is in my opinion the worst thing you can do from an ethical standpoint, and the reason that things get as bad as they have because nobody feels like they can complain because somebody always has it worse.

Worked overnight registration in an ER and this woman came in with her kid for the second time in like 3 weeks because her dog had bit the kid, the police said that they were going to have to take the dog and this woman left her like 6-year-old kid in the ER alone to go home grab that dog and hide it somewhere. Luckily they were able to get a hold of his father because him and the mother are separated but his number was on the kids file and he came and got him, but that woman cared more about making sure that the police didn't take the dog who had bit her child bad enough to warrant a trip to the ER not once but twice to the point of leaving him alone in the ER then her actual child. I was fucking flabbergasted.
