In recent days, there have been a number of posts on tumblr about third party apps that host AO3 fic on them. A lot of people are worried and even more people are pissed.

There is no need to send in emails to AO3 Support or to the Policy and Abuse team. They are fully aware of the situation and are probably drowning in emails right now. 

Here’s what I know and what you can do about it.

Fluff app / Fanfiction Pocket Archive Library app / Archive Track Reader app:

These apps work as a sort of skin for the AO3 site itself. They don’t download works and redistribute them. They provide an access point to AO3.

The developers of these apps are making money from the app itself (through tips and subscriptions - both voluntary), which wouldn’t exist without the free content created by AO3 authors. Since people post their work to AO3 because it is free to access and hosted without ads, authors are understandably angered by this.

Because these apps are basically just a portal to the site, a DMCA notice will not apply in this case. All works currently hosted on AO3 will show up on these apps, because these apps are simply letting you view AO3 through their interface.

Woodsign company apps (including MCU, Harry Potter, Sherlock, Creepypasta, and more):

These apps seem to curate  some fic from the various fandoms and rehost it. They allow users to read offline, so it’s possible they are redistributing it. In this case, a DMCA takedown might be effective.

This app developer is also making money by hosting fanfic that was written and posted for free on AO3. They have put up a paywall so that you can only access the complete fic if you pay for it or rate the app in the App store. 

If you want to post a negative review, consider saying things like:

* these fanworks are free already at archiveofourown.org * you can kudos, comment, bookmark, subscribe, and mark to read for later for free with an archiveofourown.org account * you can also download fics to read later in various file formats - both pdf and formats that are usable by ereaders * archiveofourown.org is a website with full mobile browser accessibility. Anything you can do in this app, you can do on the site - for free, and without ads * the Archive is a fully-licensed non-profit organization run by volunteers, unlike this for-profit app

There is no official AO3 app. The website is mobile friendly and if you want to have quick button access to it, you can Add to Homescreen on your phone and you can click in just like you would on an app. None of these third party apps can provide you with AO3 support. Only AO3 can do that. The best version of the site will always, always be the site itself.

I didn’t realize it until Tumblr pointed it out. That’s exactly what I was feeling.

Really wish the film critics reviewing CATS would state if they have seen the stage show version, and if they were a fan of the musical or not when they went in to see the film.

It’s the most divisive musical ever. There’s no dialogue in the stage production, just all singing and dancing and metaphors and a bunch of songs that only make sense in the scope of the entire show. It’s not particularly straightforward in its storytelling because of how it’s put together.

So many of the reviews are “CATS is weird!!!” Anyone who has seen CATS knows it’s weird!! But is the movie adaptation true to the stage show? How does it differ? What is the score like that wasn’t in the soundtrack? Was each cat cast well and did each cat stay mostly true to the stage version of themselves? Could the film cast cut it on Broadway? Is it clearer that the story is told from Victoria’s perspective compared to on stage since we have the benefit of different camera angles instead of trying to keep up with spotlights?

We’ve seen the trailers, we know the cats have titties but don’t have bulges. We are familiar enough with the CGI to have an idea if it will creep us out or if we can get used to it and watch the whole film without focusing on human-cat hybrids!

CATS is a glorious mess of flamboyance and nonsense, and depending on how you personally interpret the show it can be an interesting observation of rebirth, redemption and second chances, the outcast mentality and family that can be formed when outcasts find each other, an odd attempt at a hero and villain saga, a depiction of an acid trip with a singular focus, a straight up mess of a story line and nonsensical lyrics and ridiculous costumes, something you can’t believe Andrew Lloyd Webber actually wrote and has remained on stage for so long.... or something else!

My 70 something year old neighbor is the only other person I know in real life who loves the musical and has seen a few productions over the years. She told me she never really understands half the songs and the story, but she loves the glamour. She loves hearing fabulous voices sing memory “even though it doesn’t really make sense either” but “it’s so pretty”! She told me she loves how (for her) it’s singular purpose is escapism for a few hours at the theatre with silly songs that aren’t quite pop or cabaret but an “ode to musical theatre”. I love her. She’s seen so many shows and doesn’t claim to be a theatre person, but loves the entertainment of a musical.

My friends who I saw the show with HATED IT! The songs: annoying! Nasally! Memory was good though... the costumes: wtf?!? The story: WHAT STORY?!? Why didn’t they talk?!? Can we try to get a refund??

So yes, CATS is absolutely weird! For some, wonderfully weird! For others, painfully weird! WE KNOW THAT ALREADY!! So stop reviewing ONLY the CGI and the “plot”!

Considering how many adaptations we’ve had recently which all compare them to the book, the original movie version, or the play it was based on, you’d think professionals wouldn’t be so distracted by the CGI that they don’t compare it to itself enough!

So I was rereading Harry Potter, when I came across this and thought- what if instead of Cedric Diggory, Cassius Warrington had been chosen to compete in the Triwizard Tournament?

Imagine Dumbledore calling out the name of the Hogwarts champion and it isn’t a Gryffindor, or a Ravenclaw, or even a Hufflepuff, but it’s a Slytherin. A student from a House most people hate.

Imagine Cassius Warrington getting up, and three out of four Houses are booing at him and shouting things like “NO!” or, “We can’t have a Slytherin champion!” or demanding a retry. But he’s a Slytherin- he’s been dealing with this shit since he got sorted, so he keeps his head high and joins the other champions.

Imagine Harry trying to catch Warrington alone because he doesn’t really want to associate with Slytherins (plus Malfoy has this tendency of being around the guy ALL THE TIME since he got chosen), but at the same time he’s also fair enough not to want him to walk into the first task unprepared.

Imagine Warrington walking over to Harry a few months later, and Ron and Hermione both jump into a protective stance, wands out, but instead of attacking Harry he just tells him to stick the egg underwater. (Because Slytherins don’t forget those who helped them out).

Imagine Warrington and Harry helping each other out in the labyrinth.

Imagine Harry being devastated when Peter kills Warrington- because Voldemort doesn’t care what house they’re form, a spare is a spare.

Imagine the uproar that causes among the Slytherins, because some of their parents really are Death Eaters and they know what really happened.

Imagine Slytherins fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts and shouting “This is for Cassius!”
