There's this trope of 'truth-telling hardasses' in media

Often, they are there to teach the young hero 'you can't save everybody' or 'you have to change the system from within' or, 'you need to kill to restore order'. And it's always very disheartening to see people just accept those messages at face value, because they make sense out of context. In context, these messages are used to manipulate the main character, and often the viewer. Rare is the story that addresses how these phrases are used to make injustice acceptable and inescapable. 'You can't save everybody' means something different when you say it before someone dies a preventable death, or after a failed rescue attempt. 'You have to change the system from within' assumes the system isn't doing what the people in charge of it want it to do. That discrimination or violence is an accident or aberration.

If your 'truth-telling hardass' doesn't grow, or get exposed as a hypocrite, I'm not interested.
