Ellen Bass, "The Thing Is"
bro i LOVE indigenous fusion music i love it when indigenous people take traditional practices and language and apply them in new cool ways i love the slow decay and decolonisation of the modern music industry
I WILL !!! I WILL DO THAT
some of my favourite indigenous artists, in no particular order:
Inuit artists:
the jerry cans (esp their album Inuusiq)
beatrice deer
twin flames
Māori artists:
jordyn with a why
Indigenous australian artists:
tilly tjala thomas (i particularly love ngai yurlku nhiina)
kardajala kirridarra (srlsly check out ngajabu (Grandmother's Song))
i've also heard good things abt Baker Boy, but i haven't checked out his stuff yet
Another one for Inuit artists is Piqsiq! Two sisters who’ve been doing traditional throat singing since they were kids. They make some really gorgeous, eerie, atmospheric stuff. Highly recommend watching this video of them performing live a cappella using a looping machine, because they might be the coolest people on the planet actually
(Jo March nearly in tears voice) women,,,,
For anyone into North Asian and Central Asian folk music, there's this incredible Siberian folk-pop band called Otyken! The group is mostly women and they're from multiple indigenous groups in Siberia, with songs being sung in their range of different languages. They're so much fun and their music videos are amazing!
i'll go ahead and recommend The Halluci Nation (formerly known as A Tribe Called Red), an EDM group from First Nations Ontario that do really cool fusions of First Nations music with dubstep, moombahton, and hip hop.
I really really really appreciate people who share videos on posts like these, because almost without a doubt every time I love the music but I’ve never got the spoons to click on links and look through a bunch of music or worse google the artist I always end up too overwhelmed to start and I hate that
Haven't seen Belle Sisoski here yet so here we go: she's the current Artist of Year for BURO impact Awards. She's from Malaysia and knows how to play an insane amount of ethnic instruments and mixes them with her own voice. She does covers and her own songs, mixes ethnic instruments with Techno and shows the process. And she's also a live DJ at 19!
And one of her own:
Oh and of course there's also the HU and Bloodywood for people who like more rock and metal mixed in:
1876 is a Pow Wow punk rock band from Portland, Oregon
Alien Weaponry is an awesome Māori metal band
Darkaside is a Papuan metal band
Shepherds Reign is a Samoan metal band
Ts'msyen (pacific northwest coast) black metal
I also want to recommend King Stingray here! They describe their work as Yolŋu surf rock
Lenin Tamayo, Quechua pop singer.
And of course I can't not add Mari Boine (Sámi) to a post like this:
And Arvvas, who I think have moved on to other things but did mashups of Sámi traditional singing and jazz:
oooo you want to listen to Cemican....you want Maya and Metal fusion music so bad....
Honestly, one of the best things about historical dramas is the language.
Whether you're watching a sageuk, a taiga, or a Thai period lakorn, you can immediately pick up on the social hierarchy just through how they talk and how polite they are to one another. I always love that nuance, whether it’s subtle or completely obvious. Coming from an English background, these are the exact kinds of things that get lost in translation if you don't at least know a little bit of the language.
I'm putting together a breakdown of the royal titles and forms of address in The Edge of Horizon, because the way Phob speaks to Thin is honestly giving me butterflies. I’m such a sucker for the "reverent lover" trope (purely fictionally speaking, of course; I'm no royalist, lol!). Phob isn't just being polite; he consistently uses the highest court register, so every line sounds like a literal act of devotion. In Thai, this level of speech can actually feel intensely intimate in a way that gets lost in English translation, simply because the grammar itself is built on reverence.
1. กระหม่อม (krà-mòm): Often shortened from longer expressions involving หม่อม, this is one of the most recognizable humble, first-person pronouns found in Thai period dramas. Visually and literally, กระหม่อม refers to the crown (top) of the head. In royal court language, it became a deeply self-effacing way to refer to oneself before a monarch, symbolizing the act of bowing one's head beneath royal authority. In practice, it functions as an extremely deferential register meaning "I, your humble servant" or simply a highly respectful "I."
2. ฝ่าพระบาท (fàa phrá bàat): This is a classic royal honorific used when addressing a high-ranking member of the royal family. It literally means "the soles of the royal feet," a poetic metaphor expressing absolute reverence. While it functions exactly like "Your Majesty" or "Your Royal Highness," the specific imagery highlights a cultural sense of humility, positioning the speaker symbolically below the royal's feet.
3. พ่ะย่ะค่ะ (phâ-yâ-khâ) / พ่ะย่ะข้า (phâ-yâ-khâa): Traditional court response particles used when addressing royalty or superiors in formal registers. They translate functionally to "Yes, Your Majesty," "At your command," or "As you wish." Rather than carrying a specific literal definition, their primary purpose is to signal complete obedience and respect.
Now let's break down their royal titles.
Mom Chao Thinnakon is the son of Phra Chao Worawong Thoe Wasin. His father's title, พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ (Phra Chao Worawong Thoe), indicates a very senior prince from a high-ranking branch of the royal family. Thinnakon, however, holds the title of หม่อมเจ้า (Mom Chao), which is the lowest princely rank in the Thai hierarchy. This reflects a key rule of the Thai royal system: royal status generally steps down with each generation unless the King chooses to elevate it. Since Thinnakon is the next generation down, he inherits the lower rank of Mom Chao.
Despite being the lowest rank within the princely hierarchy, a Mom Chao is still legally and culturally recognized as royalty. They continue to receive all formal royal forms of address, with the title commonly rendered in English as His/Her Serene Highness Prince/Princess.
The generational step-down progresses as follows:
Mom Chao (หม่อมเจ้า / M.C.)
Mom Rajawongse (หม่อมราชวงศ์ / M.R.W.) — offspring of a Mom Chao.
Mom Luang (หม่อมหลวง / M.L.) — offspring of a Mom Rajawongse.
After the Mom Luang generation, the royal status effectively ends. Descendants are considered commoners and no longer receive hereditary titles, though they remain part of the extended royal family tree.
Another point that frequently causes confusion is the senior title, "Phra Chao Worawong Thoe." In formal court usage, it is typically paired with the specific princely rank "Phra Ong Chao," resulting in the full style "Phra Chao Worawong Thoe Phra Ong Chao..." In this compound title, Phra Chao Worawong Thoe denotes the prince's specific royal class within the dynasty, while Phra Ong Chao is the actual princely rank. Because of this intricate hierarchy, titles matter down the lineage. Addressing his son as "Than Chai Thinnakon" (ท่านชายทินกร) is not merely an affectionate nickname; it is the customary and respectful form of address reserved for a male Mom Chao. This title acknowledges that he is still a prince and a direct member of the royal family. It also explicitly distinguishes him from subsequent generations, such as a Mom Rajawongse (M.R.W.) or Mom Luang (M.L.), who no longer hold princely status.
In the traditional Thai royal hierarchy, royal titles carry distinct degrees of seniority.
เจ้าฟ้า (Chao Fa): The highest rank of prince or princess, typically reserved for the children of a reigning King and Queen, or those specifically elevated by decree.
พระองค์เจ้า (Phra Ong Chao): The next highest princely rank, generally held by a king's children or grandchildren, depending on maternal lineage and royal status.
Historically, most monarchs of the Chakri dynasty were born into one of these two eminent classes. For instance, both King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) began their lives holding these high-ranking royal titles.
An older queer person who went through the same school that they did and has still held onto her faith AND was close to tan’s dad is exactly who tan needed thank GOD
does anyone know if we have transmasc and transfem love and friendship today
We do. And tomorrow and the next day and every day forever and ever and ever too. :)
a long time ago i was struggling with being transmasc because i felt like i was betraying womanhood somehow. then one of my best friends came out as a trans woman and i realised "ah... there will always be so many beautiful women in the world, so it's okay that i'm not one of them". what i'm trying to say is you need to love each other or there's no point to any of this
in a reversal of this. when i came out as transfem i was almost dissapointed because i spent so long trying to be a truly good man. i was raised with a lot of shitty guys so i tried to be the most pro-feminist comfortable dude i could be for the women around me. when my egg cracked, i almost felt this feeling of "shit, are the only men who think like this secretly women inside?" and it feels nice to see that proven so utterly and completely wrong by the trans men i know in my life. i love seeing people take on the masculinity i hated and do amazing shit with it, god bless trans dudes
If you had to sing a child to sleep RIGHT NOW what would you sing and it CANT BE a lullaby it has to be a regular song
Not surprising that Aof's answers to these really difficult questions are find your community.
There's some side stepping here of a lot of things and tbh I think that is how people often continue to be people of faith with different values than is taught by the highest levels of the Catholic church.
Aof likes to make you grapple with the fact that life often requires compromises. It was one of the things I thought was most realistic about Bad Buddy, how they kind of side stepped their parents and got tacit acceptance of their relationship, if not outright acceptance.
What happens here is very similar. Tanrak and Barth are living their life on their terms and those that were part of that religious upbringing are not shunning them. But they are not outright accepting them either.
I'm sure this story is incredibly validating for those who are queer and also can't step away from their faith. And I respect that choice.
It wasn't one I could make because personal faith is not the only thing at stake when it comes to being part of such a large religion with vast influence across the world. I remember how difficult it was to step away, how it felt like I was losing a piece of myself to discard that identity and ultimately, I don't really think people should have to choose between their religious identity and being queer if they don't want to. I also am very much aware that if everyone who has these beliefs leave the Catholic church, the chances of it changing it's stance to full acceptance of queer people is lower. Yes, they have shifted some levels of acceptance due to the loss of their congregants, but true change is likely to come from within.
Anyway, ultimately I do appreciate the desire to tell this story and I hope it helped some people see their story in it and find some solace in it.
You know the kids here aren't like normal kids.
tumblr users love reading. you literally stopped for this post just because it has words in it
this is one of my favorite bits about tumblr
the users seem to actually prefer text posts to anything else, and treat it as a chore to play a video especially with sound
it's the way tanrak claims that "no one would see them" when he tries to have a moment with barth and yet there's a huge jesus idol right behind him. the way when even after they flee, the potraits and the prayer altar and the crosses don't stop, and yet everytime they're always found near something that would help the boys ahead in their journey: whether it be a light or the home or a warm hug of a trans woman with a story to tell. it's the way the narrative let's tanrak know that he can keep faith and still be himself, that he is loved and can still believe while being with barth at the same time. it's the way he never sinned in the first damn place.
Rak's sweetheart
reblog this and tell me your favorite album written and performed by a woman?
this waterfall scene is killing me gemini is killing me his delivery is insane of every single line especially 'i guess god was busy' like my god the disgust the vitriol the confusion the anger the heartbreak the tangible conflict when barth says 'i just don't know how i'm supposed to believe in god' like it's an accusation thrown at tanrak (how could you possibly still believe? after all these terrible things have happened to us both?) but also maybe even a question (tell me how. help me see what you see. i want my god to look like your god. i don't want to feel alone and abandoned anymore.) and how tanrak doesn't let it shake him in HIS belief while also not trying to convince or convert barth or comfort him in ways he knows will just be hollow to him and the tenderness and kindness when he says he'll take over barth's place of praying for his mum. like there's so much love in that. if you can't pray for her anymore, i will do it for you. i'll believe enough for the both of us. and you can tell that isn't necessarily what barth wanted to hear and that to him it means nothing. except it doesn't mean nothing because it means something to tanrak. he knows tanrak means it with his whole heart. and even if he doesn't believe he sees it for the kindness it is, and thanks him for it. and just this uneasy middle ground where they don't believe the same thing and barth clearly doesn't understand tanrak's unwavering faith but they still have respect and don't try to push or pull each other too much like it's so good this show is so fucking good these actors are SO fucking good what the hell
this was a show about faith and belief. without the church. you can live your own life and love god without the shackles of church morality. and i think that's beautiful.
