Is Vidding Lost? Can it be found? Later?
VidRecs.com is the name of a web site that sounds like what it is. However, it's much more than that and I hope that doesn't get lost like tears in rain. It will make it simple for anyone to be archive. Please Rec this post to those you think may be interested.
VIDS - Vids Inevitably Disappear Sometime
Vidding is an art that can take hours but can disappear in seconds. This loss is not based on merit. I have helped rescue 18k fanvids from from vidders who were content let them be deleted. I have run 4 virtual machines with archiving software in 2023 to rescue thousands of unlisted fanvids You Tube was going to make private forever. I created an app that has archived over 6k journals. I've seen vids you wouldn't believe unless you saw them yourself. All these projects may not be as important as the one I will be introducing here.
A finished vid is a miracle in a way. The gestation period. The potential miscarriage of initial inspiration. The possibility that even if it makes it into the world, it may not find a home. Even if it does find a home there is no guarantee it will stay there for long. There is a gap between the viewer and the archivist. This is the gap I am attempting to bridge. Democracy is in the hands and eyes of the person reading these very words. What do I mean? One, two, or a few archivists cannot be the sole arbiters of what should be archived. That choice is best made fans of a fandom who can better appreciate the value of the art in relation to its subject.

You can join by email or Discord. The only thing you need to Rec is
Vid URL - a single YT or Vimeo url
Rec Comment - a brief description of what you love about the vid
Vid Category - Fandom Category or Catchall Category
Optional - A03 Works ID - which will allow others who discover it to share their appreciation directly with the original artist. Again, this is optional.
You can even Rec directly from You Tube or Vimeo without even leaving their site. The video below walks you through the process. It literally takes seconds, but the potential of preservation lasts much longer than it ever would.
