having a hometown is such a fucked up concept. i grew up here so i do not want to stay here anymore. i miss it when i am away but once i am back i realise why i wanted to go away as far as possible from it. i am familiar with every corner of this place i did not realise when it slowly changed into something unrecognisable. i would probably like to be buried here but i'd rather die than live here

AU where Shane and Ilya don't hook up or have a decades-long secret. They don't really know each other at all, except to play each other.

Shane comes out of the closet sometime after Scott does, and in some random, lighthearted interview, they ask him what he's looking for in a man. And Shane's just, off-hand like, "Well, he'd have to have at least one Stanley Cup. Obviously." And when he gets a good reaction from that, he keeps going, like "Needs to be amazing at hockey. Definitely needs to be at least an All-Star, if not a captain. Hot too. If he can't bench-press me, I'm not interested."

And it's all in fun, except two days after the interview prints, Ilya Rozanov shows up at his door like "knock, knock. I am here to apply for boyfriend position. Do you need resume? I brought my Stanley Cup ring, just in case."

A veces Ilya tiene pesadillas durante la noche y solo lo calma ver a Shane dormir. Sueña con su mamá y el día que la encontró muerta en la cama. Una y otra vez esa imagen vuelve: siente la desesperación de ese día, se ve a sí mismo correr hacia ella, sacudirla y llamarla hasta que no le sale la voz.

Desde la primera vez, Shane se despierta también porque Ilya se mueve mucho durante la pesadilla. Intenta calmarlo, pero Ilya se siente peor por haberlo despertado.

Una noche, Shane prueba fingir que sigue durmiendo para que Ilya no se preocupe. Y funciona. Escucha cómo la agitación disminuye en pocos minutos mientras Ilya le acaricia el pelo y las pecas. Siente cómo se acomoda lo más cerca posible de su cuerpo y cómo su respiración se termina de calmar hasta que se queda dormido de nuevo.

Desde ese día, aunque Shane siempre se despierta cuando Ilya tiene pesadillas y se muere de ganas de abrazarlo, finge seguir durmiendo. Porque entiende que eso es lo que Ilya necesita.
