When the others are born, many many years later, they find us, everything we left for them.
They recover The Golden Record and look at it a million times over, they dig up our fossils and put us in museums, they study us for years and years, loving us as we love our ancestorsâ painted hands on cave walls.
In a lot of their languages, the word they use for us has the same root for âmotherâ.
megumi blinks up at you. big sleepy eyes. bedhead like a baby sea urchin. one sock on. holding his favourite stuffed frog in one chubby hand.
he stares at the bedroom door. then back at you.
"go on." you whisper. "jump on him. he deserves it."
megumi wobbles off - toddling unsteadily across the room on tiny legs, utterly determined. you peek around the corner, trying your best to hold in a laugh.
toji is dead asleep.
on his back. muscled arm flopped over his face. hair a mess. the blanket has migrated halfway to the floor, revealing a very shirtless torso and the faintest trail of scars down his abdomen.
megumi climbs onto the bed with the grace of a potato. crawls right up onto tojiâs stomach. squats there like a little gremlin.
and then-Â
"dada," he announces. pats his chest with a thump-thump-thump. "wake up."
toji groans.
megumi pats harder. "dadaaaa. wakey. wakey wakey wakey wakey- "
"âs fuckinâ saturday," toji mumbles, voice gravel. "what did i do to deserve this."
"you forgot to do the dishes last night," you call sweetly from the hallway.
"snitch," he groans.
megumi takes this as encouragement. flops down fully on tojiâs chest and sticks his froggie plush directly into his face.
"wibbit," he says very seriously, with his raspy lisp. "froggie say wake."
toji cracks one eye open. stares blankly at the ceiling. lets out the heaviest sigh in recorded history.
and then he sits up - gumi still attached to his torso - and mutters, âthis family is insane.â
you climb into bed beside them both, hands finding its way into gumiâs wild hair. the other resting over tojiâs warm chest.Â
they smell like sleep and laundry detergent and something that feels like home.
"this bed is overcrowded," toji mutters.
"deal with it," you mumble, half-asleep already.
megumi sneezes. toji groans. you laugh into his skin.
A/N: just a short one i wrote on my plane ride back from holidays AGES ago. lol
đ àŁȘ Ë âĄ âșâ little yuji is concerned for sukuna's girlfriend.
"uncle kuna!", yuji's little voice echoes through the living room, full of pure panic and concern.
sukuna's lounging on his couch with his legs spread wide apart, taking up more than half of the space and while toji, his friend, takes up the other half as he looks at the little boy with a slightly bemused look. sukuna merely grunts in response to his youngest nephew's desperate cries, not at all bothered.
"uncle kuna!", yuji cries again, running up to him with glossy eyes and a petulant pout on his lips. sukuna just stares down at him, waiting for yuji to say whatever it was he wanted to â which he figured would be something stupid as always.
"what's going on?", choso â sukuna's other nephew â strolls in and plops onto the armchair besides toji. the two older men just shrug lazily, taking swigs of the beer as the boy tries to find the right words to express himself.
yuji begins to sniffle and says in a cracked voice, "uncle, you need to... you need to be nicer to your girlfriend! or else... she will leave you!"
toji chokes on his beer while choso scoffs at his little brother's statement. and sukuna can only look at the boy with a small frown, confused as to where this possibly was going.
"what do you mean by that?", choso pries, trying his best to keep a poker face as yuji turns his head around wearing an even bigger pout than before.
yuji shakes his head, croaking out, "one time i saw him with his girlfriend on the bed!" both toji and choso now are stifling their laughs as they see the sheer horror that's plastered on the boy's face. "and then! then he pushed her on the bedâ"
before yuji can even finish his sentence, the two men burst into a fit of laughter, practically gasping for air after what they'd just heard. sukuna's entire body stiffens at that, eyes wide and face turning a faint shade of pink.
"pushed her on the bed?", toji repeats, pointing at sukuna while choso continues to laugh behind him.
"yes!", yuji snivels, the utmost serious and worrisome look in his eyes. "and-and... he even tied her arms to the bed! and called her a 'bad girl'!"
toji and choso cannot contain themselves anymore, guffawing loudly at what the boy had just said and the way sukuna's face has turned a bright red at this point doesn't help one bit. "tied her arms together?", choso asks, in between fits of laughter, wiping a tear from his eyes.
"yes!", yuji cries. "isn't that mean?! won't she leave? i don't want her to leave!"
sukuna lightly flicks his little nephew's forehead as the two men besides him continue to howl and chortle obnoxiously. he brings the boy closer to him and says in the softest voice he can, "she's not gonna leave."
"promise?", yuji sniffs, extending out his pinky finger to his uncle. sukuna sighs in exasperation but ultimately wraps his own finger 'round the pinky finger, solidifying this promise.
sukuna isn't one to get so easily embarrassed but this was really something. his entire body seemed to be burning, cheeks and ears dusted a tomato red. gosh, he was going to have to be much more careful from now on whenever he would bring you over!
you wake up at the feeling of tiny, sticky hands pulling at your cheeks. letting out a soft hum, opening your eyes slowly to find the cutest little face in front of you, smiling brightly
âmorningâ, mommy!â he chirps, flashing you his baby teeth.
âmmm, good morning, babyâ you murmur sleepily, hand going to his face, brushing his messy bed hair off his forehead, âyou are up early today,â
âyeah! i dreamed about you!â he excitedly tells you as you slowly sit on the bed, pulling your son into your lap
âyeah? about what?â
before your son can even open his mouth, a low grunt made both of you turn your heads to the other side of the bed to see a tuft of pink hair buried face down on the pillows, a muscular, tattoed arm emerging from the covers to settle heavily around your stomach.
âsâtoo fucking early for this,â your husband mutters under his breath, eyes still squeezed shut.
you swat at his arm, a smile tugging at your lips the moment yuuji starts giggling at his dadâs bad word. âryo! language,â you scold softly and your husband finally opens his eyes slowly, squinting against the morning light.
âbratâs old enough, donât you think?â sukuna asks, looking at his son, who only nods enthusiastically.
âyeah, mommy! iâm a big kid, i got 'munity to bad words!â your son puffs his chest proudly, tilting his chin up
sukuna flashes you a sleepy, loopsided smirk before closing his eyes again. this time, his arm raise from your stomach to tug at yuuji, making the little boy fall between the two of you.
âgo back to sleep, brat. itâs saturday and too early to be up,â he says, his big hand covers  his sonâs face to force him to close his eyes and yuuji giggles, moving his face back and forth to escape his fatherâs grip.
âdad! i was going to tell mommy about my dream!â he whines, pouting but the little yawn that leaves his lips tells you he was ready for another hour or so of sleep.
âlater, let your mom rest,â sukuna opens an eye to look at you, gesturing with his head for you to lie back down, âcome here, ma. cuddle your husband and son,â
you let out soft laugh, lying on your side, soon feeling the weight of your husbandâs arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him and the now sleepy yuuji tucked against his chest.
closing your eyes, you let out a dreamy sigh, falling back to sleep enveloped by the warmth of your two favorite boys.

đż: English is not my first language. This is so cute and I loved doing it, just a happy (and maybe slightly dysfunctional) family.
When Damian was born, Jason and I had already been dating for almost a year. Even so, nothing could have prepared us for the chaos that came with his arrival. Wayne Manor had never felt so alive â and so loud. All the batboys were in a complete state of panic, pacing back and forth, arguing over absurdly small details as if the world would end if anything went wrong.
It was almost funny how badly they wanted everything to be perfect for the newest member of the family.
Jason, in particular, took the mission to a nearly dangerous level. He almost got into a fight with his brothers because he wanted to be the only one helping to set up Damianâs room. He didnât accept suggestions, help, or even anyone elseâs presence. In the end, he got his way â but not before threatening nearly everyone, saying heâd pistol-whip anyone who tried to take that moment away from him.
When Damian was finally born, everything seemed to go quiet for a moment.
He was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen in my life. Small, delicate, with features far too striking for someone so new to the world. It wasnât exactly surprising, considering that beauty seemed to be a hereditary trait in that family, but still⊠there was something about him that held your gaze.
In the first few months, Jason and I went to Wayne Manor almost every day. Always carrying bags full of gifts, toys, and things he didnât even know how to use yet. Damian seemed to enjoy the attention, as if he knew exactly when all eyes were on him. Even as a newborn, he gave off the strange impression that he understood everything around him â quietly observing, far too aware for his age.
Now, Jason and I are standing in front of the manorâs entrance, about to walk into Damianâs second birthday party.
In just two years, he went from being a quiet baby to an adorable little boy⊠or almost adorable. Damian never liked being picked up or showered with kisses by just anyone. He always made it very clear when something bothered him. I vividly remember a time when one of Dickâs friends tried to grab him without warning. Within seconds, Damian grabbed the TV remote and hit her square in the head.
For a few seconds, no one knew exactly what to do.
Laughing felt wrong. Apologizing did too.
After all, there stood a grumpy little mini-man, setting his boundaries loud and clear from a very early age.
Still, there was something that always surprised everyone in the family: Damian had grown attached to me. Not just anyone received his hugs, his affection, or his rare smiles. Not even his own father seemed to get as much affection as I did. When Damian wanted to be held, it was my name he called. When he was tired or irritated, it was with me that he calmed down.
Donât ask me where that child got so much personality.
All I know is that, from the moment he was born, Damian always knew exactly who he was â and who he would allow to stay close.
When we walked into the manor, everything was decorated in shades of red and black, with a few touches of yellow scattered here and there. Everything looked impeccable â beautiful, even luxurious, considering the celebration was meant to be just for family. Bruce always preferred to celebrate moments like that in a more intimate way, far from big events.
As soon as Damian saw me walk in, the scene was almost comical.
He had a scowl on his face, staring at Tim, who was desperately trying to get at least one smile out of him for the picture. Nothing worked. Damian remained serious, clearly annoyed by all the attention. But the moment his little eyes landed on me, everything changed. His grumpy expression melted away and, as if by magic, he broke into a huge, ear-to-ear smile.
Tim looked confused for a few seconds before turning toward me. When he saw me, he rolled his eyes, immediately understanding the reason behind the sudden smile.
âOH MY GOD! HEâS SMILING!â Tim shouted, drawing everyoneâs attention.
All eyes turned to Damian.
Dick was the first to react. He pointed at me and made a desperate gesture for me not to move.
âStay right there! We need pictures of this grumpy kid smiling,â he said, nearly panicked.
âThatâs it, look at your muse and smile,â Tim joked, camera already in hand, snapping several photos in a row.
Beside me, Jason scoffed, but he couldnât hide his smile.
âBabe⊠sometimes I think thereâs a man in this world more in love with you than I am, when I see the way Damian looks at you.â He wrapped an arm around my waist and kissed my cheek. âBut then I remember thatâs impossible.â
Damianâs smile stayed right there â firm, proud â as if he knew exactly the effect he had, and as if he were perfectly satisfied being the center of attention, as long as I was nearby.
As soon as we got closer, Damian immediately stretched his little arms toward me, asking to be picked up. He mumbled something that sounded like âsisterâ in his tangled baby language, pulling an automatic smile from me.
âHey, man⊠Iâm here too. An âhiâ would be nice, since you donât seem to notice me at all,â Jason complained, gently grabbing Damianâs tiny hand and shaking it a little.
Before I could respond, a voice came from behind Jason, making us jump slightly.
âMan, I think Damianâs going to try to steal your girl when he gets older,â Barbara said. She hadnât appeared until then.
Jason immediately crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes at the mini-man now settled comfortably in my arms.
âIâm gonna kill him, the little son of a bitch.â
âJason! Watch your language!â I scolded him seriously, giving his chest a firm slap.
He pointed at Damian, completely offended.
âSee? This little brat is already causing problems in my relationship.â
Damian, meanwhile, just laughed. He seemed not to care about Jason at all â or maybe he cared a little too much. As soon as Jason finished talking, Damian lifted his tiny hand, cupped my cheek, and kissed it. A completely slobbery, ridiculously adorable kiss.
I looked at Jason.
He was standing there, jaw dropped, utterly indignant and speechless.
When Damian pulled back, leaving my cheek completely covered in drool, he turned to Jason and stuck out his tongue with a triumphant grin.
For a few seconds, there was silence.
Then everyone burst out laughing, completely surprised by the little oneâs bold attitude.
âYou motherfucker⊠Iâll let you grow up and thenââ Jason started, but was immediately cut off.
âJason!â I shot him a deadly look.
And that only made the laughter grow even louder, while Damian snuggled into my arms, clearly pleased with the chaos he had caused.
Yes, while I've talked about the Bruce Wayne Effectâą but I also think that the Waynes have a weird genetic gift of avoiding that awful, painful and gross transition known as puberty. They go from the cutest little kids to boom! puberty whips by them like a runaway train and then they're the most beautiful creatures on earth.
Bruce was the cutest little guy as a kid and yeah, while he always looked so sad after his parents died he was still a cutie. Bruce came down the stairs one morning and Alfred just took a double take because Bruce has shot up over night. Bruce doesn't get why Alfred suddenly suggested they forget about school and go shopping for new clothes.
Dick was a pretty little kid, the sweetest thing with the biggest blue eyes. Like Bruce, he came down one morning to find Bruce making breakfast. Bruce dropped his glass of oj and called Alfred because "weird things are happening in here" and Alfred ran in thinking there was a threat but no, there was Dick transformed from a little duckling into tall, slim handsome young man who looks slightly alarmed because who the hell is that in the mirror?
Jason was literally the cutest little kid, a few years of good eating and exercise, he had the roundest baby face and he hated looking like a kid, even at fifteen. He was literally praying for pimples, a growth spurt and his voice to break. Then crowbar, crowbar, explosion and one swim in the Lazurus Pit etc, and Jason just emerges as a 6', 250lbs, built as fuck shit house and his first thought after "wtf" was "my god finally".
Tim was in the throes of pimply skin, squeaky voice and all that horrific side effects of puberty a few years after Robin. A few weeks into staying at the Manor as an official Wayne, Tim wakes up to clear skin, a deep voice and like four inches of height, he's even begun to fill out. "What is this?" he wails on the phone to Dick that very morning.
Damian keeps hearing about "it". He doesn't know what "it" is only that it befell Grayson, Todd and Drake quickly and without mercy. Duke apparently escaped "it" having already dealt with "it" before he joined the family. Damian doesn't want to appear afraid or unnerved in case "it" senses fear or his brothers think he's a child. Damian sleeps with Titus guarding him and a sabre in reach at all times. He will be ready for "it".
Summary: When two members of the Teen Trinity get together, it leaves everyone shook. Why? 'Cuz you're Wonder Girl, and Damian's Robin! As the youngest power couple of the Justice League, their dynamic leaves everyone, Superman to Green Arrow, both confused and obsessed. WonderBat Junior is now suddenly the public's favourite OTP!

âSorry Iâm late,â You chirped, twirling your lasso like it was a ribbon in a dance recital. âThere was a kaiju on the way here. It tripped over a ferry. I had to save some kids, then I got a smoothie.â
Diana just sighed fondly. âYouâre lucky youâre charming.â
âThank you. I work hard at it.â
Wally grinned. âYou also work hard at driving Batboy crazy.â
At the far end of the table, Damian glared at him. âCall me that again and youâll be tasting your own kneecaps.â
You just padded over and plopped into the seat next to Damian-leaning over to fix the slightly crooked hem of his uniform cape without saying a word.
He didnât even flinch.
Didnât tell you to stop.
Didnât growl or brush you off.
He just looked at you like you'd just handed him the sun on a silver platter.
Everyone saw it.
âWhy does he never snap at her like that?â Tim muttered to Dick.
âBecause heâs in love,â Dick whispered. âL-O-V-E. Like, Shakespeare-level. Like, heâd probably commit treason if she asked nicely.â
âOr meanly,â Jason added. âHonestly, she could crush him and heâd say thank you.â
âYou good, Damian?â You asked gently, giving him a concerned look whilst popping open your Charlotte Tilbury mirror and reapplying your lip liner, all of which had been bought for you, courtesy of Damian, his argument was "What's the purpose of being the child of a billionaire if I cannot spend such money on my closest friend?"
He nodded wordlessly.
Absolutely no one missed the way his ears went pink.
âYou gonna say anything at this meeting, or just sit there doing heart-eyes at your girlfriend?â Hal teased.
âSheâs not-â Damian started.
You cut in with a bright laugh. âGive him time. Iâm waiting for a big romantic speech in Latin.â
Clark and Diana exchanged a glance.
âSheâs kidding,â Diana said with a small smirk.
âSheâs not,â Bruce muttered. âHeâs already written three.â
The laughter that followed was loud, but Damian didnât say a word. He just leaned closer to you-because even your laughter made his shoulders relax. You were the only softness in his whole jagged world.
And when you turned to him and whispered something only he could hear, he nodded with the smallest, rarest smile on his lips.
Wally nudged Jon. âIf this keeps up, Damianâs gonna start holding her purse during fights.â
âI donât think heâd mind,â Jon said absentmindedly, his focus was on trying to win a match in Arsenal on Roblox. âHe already carries a spare set of her lip comboâ He adds, matter-of-factly, exclaiming loudly when he got eliminated, earning a glance from his father.
âDamian, for the last time-I will be the one throwing the tank. Youâre five foot nothing.â You said, without a hint of hesitation
âI am five foot four and a half,â Damian growled, kicking the side of the dented war machine.
From above, the fight against Intergang raged on, but the two of you worked like lightning and thunder, blunt force and precise strikes, banter and brutality. The civilians were evacuated. The thugs taken down.
After the last one was zip-tied by Jon midair (complete with his usual awkward smile and apology to the guy), the three of you regrouped, just in time to turn around to a myriad of camera flashes, paparazzi and curious reporters, all dying to get an interview with the the children of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman, better known as-

The elevator doors opened to reveal the other sidekicks of heroes, gathered near the cafeteria entrance. Roy, Wally, Cassie, even Jaime.
Dick leaned against the wall, already grinning. âLook who made the news again.â
On the screen above the food line was a clip of you kissing Damian on the cheek after stopping a Intergang. The public had lost their minds.
âAmericaâs Sweethearts!â Roy mock-announced. âCanât believe the heir to darkness is in love.â
âOllie thinks itâs hilarious, and adorable,â Dinah said, appearing with a tray of food. âHe said, and I quote, âDianaâs kid could throw Damian across the Watchtower if she wanted.ââ
âShe does,â Damian muttered, deadpan.
You winked. âHe likes it.â
Cue full-body choke laughter from Wally.
âHey, Sunshine.â
You looked up from your phone just in time to catch the can of your favourite energy drink flying through the air towards you. Snatching it with a single hand, no glance necessary.
âLiteral legend,â you grinned.
Damian didnât say anything, just sat down next to you on the couch like he hadnât just remembered your weirdly specific go-to order from that one gas station near Keystone.
âAlso,â he said quietly, tugging a small pouch from his utility belt, âyour gloss was fading. lip liner's in here too.â
You blinked and then cracked up. âYou did not pack my lip combo.â
âI always pack your lip combo.â
âOh my god,â Wally said across the room, âheâs a walking Sephora. Thatâs so romantic and terrifying.â
âYou know whatâs terrifying?â Roy added. âThat he even knows what a lipliner is.â
âItâs the Fenty Gloss Bomb and the Mecca Max pout pencil,â Damian said absently, reaching over to twist open your drink for you like it was muscle memory. âIt suits her undertones.â
âHEâS IN TOO DEEP,â Dick stage-whispered.
Everyone was watching. You didnât care.
You rested your cheek on Damianâs shoulder dramatically. âMy little Batboyâs gonna end up a beauty guru if he keeps this up.â
âI already do her winged liner before galas,â Damian said flatly.
âHis hands donât shake,â you added. âItâs so cool.â
Jason actually choked on air while you and Damian stood up.
"i'm gonna go get myself some takis, would you like me to get you some veggie crisps and then we can head on out to the arcade?" You were so excited for your date with Damian today, seriously looking forward to the buttload of prizes he was about to win you.
Just then, Garfield asked Damian how he kept up with his metabolism with how much he trains.
âI eat a lot of food,â he replied, serious as ever.
âYeah,â You cut in with a grin. âWe can tell.â
You reached around and grabbed his waist. âWe know your a biggieâ you teased, then kissed his cheek in front of everyone.
A hush.
Then-
âIS HE BLUSHING?â
âBroski just glitched.â
âThat manâs soul left his body.â
Damian cleared his throat. âTouch me again and Iâll-â
You kissed the other cheek.
â-...continue being respected and loved by you.â
Then, you literally just nonchalantly grabbed his hand and walked away. Not even turning back.
âGod, heâs so gone,â Tim said, not even looking up from his chess match.
âCanât even be mad,â muttered Bart. âSheâs Wonder Woman's daughter and heâs just grateful to be breathing the same air.â
Across the room, Clark whispered to Diana, âIs this what it was like when you and Bruce were younger?â
Diana sipped her tea and smirked. âNo. We were worse.â

And besides you on one side Jason seems to relax, like a suspicion he had was confirmed. And on the other side, Damian goes even more still, like hes trying not to breathe.
Not the rigid, disciplined stillness he wears like a assassin's mask, not the carefully curated poise he uses to hide his age and his size and his fear of being underestimatedâno, this is something quieter, something smaller, something that curls inward and tucks itself behind his ribs where no one can see it. His hands, already pressed together so tightly they tremble, squeeze even harder, knuckles whitening like bone beneath parchment.
You feel the shift in him like a thread snapped taut.
Because the boy hadnât just insulted the sketchbookâhe had dismissed it, dismissed the value of something Damian cherished, something he poured himself into in the only soft way he knows how.
And it hits you, sharp and terrible, that you always scold him for not sharing. For refusing to let Kori have a sip of his tea. For refusing to let Dick teach Titus any tricks. For clutching the blanket a little too tightly when Jason tries to tug it away. For stiffening whenever anyone reaches for his things.
Itâs mostly Jason he refuses, and Jason laughs it off, or calls him âdragon hoarder,â or ruffles his hair until Damian hisses like a feral catâbut every time, Damianâs grip on whatever heâs holding gets just a little stronger, as if the world might suddenly take it from him if he loosens his fingers for even a second.
Now you understand.
Of course he guards whatâs his.
Of course he claws around the small pieces of gentleness heâs allowed himself to keep.
Of course he doesnât share easilyânot because heâs bratty or spoiled, but because this world, this school, these people treat what he loves like itâs disposable.
Every day, in some small way, youâre reminded that despite all the hours youâve poured into this boyâteaching him softness, teaching him stillness, teaching him that safety can exist outside the battlefieldâyou do not know him as fully as you wish you did, and moments like this only underline how much of him is still a mystery waiting to be unspooled.
You told him to try sharing, gently, patiently, in that soft earnest way you reserve only for him, and he listened with all the reluctant effort of a child who hates being wrong but wants to make you proud anyway.
And now this.

One of the boys shifts, small and fidgety in his polished shoes, before speaking again in a tone that wobbles between indignation and fear. âMy brother was drawing with him for a moment,â he explains, eyes flicking everywhere except at Damian. âI ran to get more pencils from my bag. I turned around andâand he was beating him up. So I hit him back.â
And thatâfinallyâthat pulls Damianâs head up.
He snaps so fast you almost miss it, and his voice, usually so sharp-edged and controlled, cracks with the bright, unmistakable pitch of a little boy trying too hard not to sound like one.
âHe wouldnât give it back!â he bursts out, cheeks flushed, eyes shining with fury and embarrassment all at once. âAnd donât act all high and mighty like you were able to land a shot that didnât feel like a teddy bear was hitting me!â
You stare.
Because you donât know what you were expecting, but it wasnât thisânot the simple, painfully mundane truth of childhood.
Maybe you had imagined something far more sinister, something orchestrated, something cruelâthat the boys had stolen the sketchbook from his bag and passed it around until it was ruined beyond recognition, laughing while he stood by helplessly. Maybe you thought their wealthy parents had instigated something, turned their sons into little soldiers of some type of bigotry, weaponizing privilege the way adults in this city always do.
It would have been dramatic. Understandable. Something you could grab onto without your mind stumbling.
But insteadâ
Instead you watch the pieces fall into place, and everything becomes shockingly, achingly clear.
You finally understand why Jason was so calm, leaning back with that slow, quietly amused look like heâd already read the ending of the story while you were still stuck on the first chapter. He had full utter confidence in his hunch that this was how it was going to go.
Because while you spend nearly every waking moment trying to guide Damian toward softness, encouraging him to act his age, reminding himâgently, endlesslyâthat he is allowed to be tenâŠ
You forget.
You forget that he is ten.
He is a brat, sometimesâa brilliant, stubborn, prideful, quick-to-spark little brat who bristles at losing and flares up at being embarrassed. He is arrogant, occasionally unbearably so, and he can change his loyalties within ten seconds flat if someone annoys him enough. He can turn a friend into a foe and a foe back into a friend with the reckless, dramatic speed that only children possess.
Jason didn't forget that he's ten, because in ever time he dismisses, teases, spars, argues and insults Damianâhe does it because Damian is ten.
The boys didnât destroy the sketchbook maliciously.
It was ruined in a scuffleâan honest, thoughtless, childish tumble of limbs and pride.
And Damianâ
Damian looks ashamed because he knows it.
Because for once in his short, regimented life, he acted not like an assassin or a soldier or an heir.
But like a normal ten-year-old boy.
And he doesnât know whether heâs allowed to.
âWell.â Jason leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees, chin cupped in his palm as if the weight of the worldâor at least this absurd meetingâis something he can hold in one hand, ânow that we have a clear essence of the situation, I highly doubt we need to escalate this to pressing chargesââ
âMy little boyâs legs are broken!â the woman cries, her voice slicing across the room like shattered glass, pointing at her son cradled in her arms with such melodrama that it nearly tips the balance of the room, âand he canât see out of his left eye! Can you, baby?!â
She pivots sharply to her other sonâthe one who had run for pencilsâwhile her husband sits frozen, trying to parse whether this is real or just a performance heâs obligated to witness, âand my oldest has a broken arm! What kind of mother would I be if Iââ
âYou didnât immediately take them to the hospital,â Jason interrupts, tilting his head lazily with the kind of calm that seems effortless and infuriating all at once, âinstead of waiting for a parentâteacher conference to be over to collect apology money?â
âThatââ she sputters, her words tripping over themselves as the older boy hides a stifled giggle in the crook of his arm, a tiny betrayal that seems to make her panic even more pronounced.
âHuh,â you murmur under your breath, barely containing a smile as you glance at Jason, whose expression doesnât change even an inch, the corners of his mouth twitching with quiet amusement.
âDaniel!â the woman yells at her son, her voice cracking with exasperation, a note that teeters somewhere between anger and embarrassment, but before she can continue her tirade, Jason interjects, leaning back slightly in his chair as though the entire theater of this meeting is merely background noise to him.
âIâd have to say the tabloids would absolutely love this,â he hums, slow and deliberate, with that infuriating air of someone who knows exactly how to push buttons without ever seeming malicious, âowners of a childrenâs hospital in central Gotham, donât even trust their own children to be admittedâneeding the Wayne family to personally apologize just so they can pay for the childâs injuries after a scuffle between children.â
His words hang in the room, absurdly calm, perfectly composed, while the mother sputters once more, flustered into silence. Damian shifts slightly in his chair, finally daring to peek at Jason and you with wide, uncertain eyes.
Thereâs no real blame to be assigned in this farceâthe fight itself was chaotic, ridiculous, and entirely ten-year-old in natureâbut to the outside world, to the casual observer, the only ones who could be faulted are the parents, a truth Jason delivers with such quiet, infuriating precision that it almost feels like a private joke just between the three of you.
No one is over here expecting Bruce Wayne to be a good father.
Owners of a children's hospital? Eh. Different story.
âI do hopeââ Jason begins, his voice slow, deliberate, eyes sweeping over the woman with that calm, measured weight that makes it impossible to ignore him, because he knows exactly how much sway she has over her husband and just how much sheâs enjoying every second of it, âthat we have come to some sort of agreement.â
She leans in, lips curling like sheâs somehow still savoring some private victory, and you glance sideways at the poor headmaster, whose shoulders slump, a sigh escaping that feels remarkably like Alfredâs when heâs about to threaten to resign for the thousandth time that week, the kind of exasperated patience that is entirely over matched by the spectacle in front of him.
âI do hope, Mr. Wayne, that your family will continue to show their everlasting generosity in providing my boysââ
âOh, fuck off,â you think, letting the words press against the inside of your skull with all the force of a hammer you never meant to swing aloud, feeling your scowl deepen before you even realize it.
And then you notice: everyoneâs eyes are on you, the room frozen for the briefest heartbeat in stunned disbelief, as if the universe has paused to consider the audacity of your interruption.
Oh.
Oh.
You said it with a scowl.
Your face immediately flushes, heat blooming across your cheeks like sunlight spilling over frost. You instinctively dart your gaze toward Damian, because youâve always made it a personal rule to never, under any circumstances, let a curse pass your lips in front of the little boyâbecause he is, undeniably, still just a little boy, a truth that has been pounding at the edges of your mind all day, louder than any reprimand or reminder.
And there he is, sitting there in the child-sized chair with his shoulders stiff and his hands pressed together in what was almost habit. Yet despite everything, despite the chaos of furious parents, scowling adults, and ruined sketches strewn across the headmasterâs desk, Damian is smiling.
Not smirking, not grinning with that sly, calculating edge youâve seen too often in him before.
Just smiling. Purely, vulnerably, with a kind of wide-eyed sincerity that makes your heart lurch, so wide in fact that you can see one of his tiny, wiggly baby teeth, jutting out as if daring the world to be mad at him.
You don't even realize that Jason has de-escalated the situation, mumbling that âmy wife is a little protective you seeâ because you're so absorbed in the little boy next to you.
When the three of you are walking side by side in the Gotham streets later the time is around 6:00pm. There was still paper work that needed to be signed and acknowledgments you would adequately discipline the boys at home. Jason forged Bruceâs signature easily.
You finally hear the full story of the fight: the boys at the edge of the rock climbing wall, tumbling down, and the sketchbookâthe precious, mud-and-juice-soaked sketchbookâcaught in the middle of it all. The boys are grounded from the playground for a week. You suppose thatâs fair. Damian, however, is still embarrassed, still clutching his bag with the same iron grip he uses on a sword, but his body carries a stiffness that is almost unfamiliar, the kind that speaks of shame and self-awareness rather than strength.
âSoâŠâ Jason draws out, his voice lazy and teasing, making the three of you halt in the middle of the street, the moon casting a silver glow over his dark hair, the wet pavement reflecting the city lights, the night air just cool enough to make every breath feel like a gift.Â
You and Damian blink at him in unison, small, delicate movements like fireflies caught in glass, and the warmth that spreads through Jasonâs chest is quiet but steady, because he was right: no matter what, they still have thisâthis end-of-day calm, this survival, this fragile little victoryâand it is enough.
And he was right: Damian is a child. And a child isn't something to stress over when they act like one.
Jason kneels before Damian with deliberate patience, legs wide, elbows resting on knees, making himself eye level with the boy so that the gravity of the moment is shared equally. "Time for your first punishment baby-'B'."
Damian's breath actually catches, his brows furrowing as he looks down at the pavement. â...Fine.â
Because he's too embarrassed at acting like a child to think he doesn't deserve it.
You watch as Jasonâs smile spreads, warm and easy, the corners of his eyes crinkling into perfect little crescent moons as he flicks Damian lightly on the forehead, âHot chocolate, little man. Iâm going to make your first hot chocolateânot be made by our lovely girl over here.â
Because the last thing either of you would do now is punish him.
Because while it might be fitting, maybe even just, to reprimand any other child in the world in a effort to teach what they don't know, Damian is not any other child. Damian knows what he did and he's more embarrassed then he could possibly explain.
But, under the two of you, he would never be punished for being ten, for being stubborn, for being messy, for being alive in the small, chaotic ways that he thinks the word wont allow of him.Â
ââŠCan IâŠâ Damianâs voice is small, hesitant, almost swallowed by the evening air as he tilts his head up to you, eyes wide and unsure, before finally mumbling, âCan I have the stuff Jason had on his?â
You blink down at him, caught off guard that he even rememberedâthe whipped cream and marshmallows youâd piled on Jasonâs mug just a week ago, a detail so small it could have been forgotten in a blink.
âThe⊠whipped cream?â you murmur softly, words catching on the edge of your tongue, âOr the marshmallows?â
Damianâs gaze slides away, careful and deliberate, and then he lets his voice drift back toward you, quieter, yet with the tiniest spark of hope, ââŠCan I have...both?â
You canât help the smile that spreads slowly, deliberately across your face, warmth curling from your chest to your lips, and Jasonâwatching, always watchingâthinks he has never seen anything so small and perfect and utterly beautiful in all his life.
âOf course. Of course, anything you want,â you reply, voice soft, gentle, unshakable, because you are not his parents. Because for once, he is allowed to be greedy, allowed to take, allowed to be ten and loud and small and bright all at once, and no one in the world is going to scold him for it.
âWhat about me?â Jason pouts, springing to his feet with the effortless ease that makes you simultaneously want to sigh and laugh, looping an arm around your waist while letting his other hand settle protectively, almost ceremoniously, on Damianâs head.
You squeal, swatting his hand away before curling Damianâs tiny one into yours, letting the warmth of your gloves seep into his fingers. âAbsolutely not! You had one this morning!â
âThat was over twelve hours ago!â Jason counters, a laugh bubbling from his chest, a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth as he leans a little closer, âAnd I did a lot of negotiating, so I think I deserve it!â
âYou wonât sleep at night, Jason,â you sigh, shaking your head with a fond, teasing smile as the three of you start moving toward the cafe, the wet Gotham pavement reflecting the golden street lamps like liquid honey. Your heart feels full of that honey. Jason's smile does too.
âLike I sleep at night when Iâm with you anyway,â Jason fires back, smirking, and Damian lets out a very theatrical, very fake gag that sends your chest lifting with a soft, breathy chuckle.
You huff again over your shoulder, your fingers tightening slightly around Damianâs hand, warmth curling through you as you glance down at him. Yeah. Youâre going to buy Jason one too, because you cant deny the love of your life anything.
Then, because itâs you and life is cruelly generous in ways only Bruce Wayne can engineer, youâre going to text Bruce a joke about needing a Venmo for babysitting two of his sons when he asks how the meeting went.
And, of course, Bruce Wayne sends back five hundred dollars with a text that reads, succinctly, âI talked to the cafe ownersâjust give them my name any time you want to go.â
Jason, of course, abuses this new privilege without hesitation, sneaking extra marshmallows every single time now.
You would have argued back against your boyfriends father if the image of Damian trying whipped cream for the first timeâhim swaying back and forth in his seat like a boy his age, doing it subconsciously tooâwasn't already engraved to your heart.
Jason put whipped creme on your nose and licked it off when Damian wasn't looking. Just like he did on your first date.
