(Context for gentiles: the man on the left is probably a member of Chabad. Chabad is a sort-of-Orthodox-it’s-really-complicated-please-don’t-ask-me-to-elaborate Jewish organization that does outreach involving asking Jews in the wider community if they’d like the chance to complete a mitzvah; for example, at Sukkot they’ll ask if Jews walking by would like to shake the bundle of Four Species, which they might not have the chance to do at home. This probably-a-Chabad-member has identified the queer person in the photo as a Jew and offered them the chance to wrap tefillin, which is a central part of certain Jewish blessings. Basically this very traditional man has walked up to this very untraditional man and said “hey! Have you had the chance to pray today? Would you like to?” Jewish prayer mostly revolves around the saying of blessings, not around requests, so the prayers said with tefillin are basically “it’s an awesome day and I’m glad I’m living it.” There is no “this person is wrong for their flag or orientation or gender”—it’s just “this person is a fellow Jew, I will ask if they want to perform a mitzvah.”)

I was already here, but I’m taking a closer look at this image and I think there’s another important thing to add:

Especially because this is a Pride event, there is a much higher than usual greater-than-zero chance this person is either nonbinary or a trans man.

Wrapping tefillin is a male mitzvah. That’s to say, women aren’t obligated to do it, and many traditionalists say women shouldn’t do it. And it’s also considered an act of modesty for men not to touch women outside of their own family.

The probably-a-Chabad-member is wrapping tefillin (a male mitzvah), which involves touching someone he’s not related to (forbidden between sexes), on someone who may not be a cisgender man and, if he is, presents as GNC.

So in addition to everything I said above: this is a very traditional man looking at a very untraditional person-who-may-not-meet-his-own-definition-of-“man” and saying “you are a man to yourself in the eyes of G-d, therefore you’re a man to me. Have you had the chance to pray today? Would you like to?”

- The actors walk off at the end of June if the studios don’t sit down with the writers

- Rumor is directors will follow. This will grind everything to a halt.

- Nobody is asking for a boycott. Neil Gaiman has pointed out that making Good Omens S2 a huge hit actually puts more pressure on Amazon to negotiate with the writers

- This implies it’s okay to catch up on old streaming content without breaking the line too

- This is a screenwriter strike; books will keep coming out.

- Movies already made will keep coming out for months. Again, actors have not called for a boycott; you aren’t breaking the line if you go see a movie.

- I don’t know where this puts podcasts but none of them have studio funding or platforms so they’ll probably keep going.

- Substack/Tumblr book club are all public domain works and will keep going. In addition to Dracula Daily there’s Whale Weekly, Dickens Daily, My Dear Wormwood (The Screwtape Letters), Letters from Watson (Sherlock Holmes) and more.

- Your local library always needs love. With the Libby app you don’t even need to physically go there.

You can read a pretty good summary of it here, but as (most likely) Ashkenazi Jews, PP probably follows the minhag (custom) that says “that by naming a newborn child after a deceased loved one, the soul lives on through the child.” (Quoted from the site linked above.) And given how his Uncle Ben died, it just makes it all the more sadder tbh.

another fine distinction is that the soul isn’t thought to be reincarnated, it’s that the memory of the loved one is kept alive and more good deeds in life can be inspired by (and thus partially attributed to) the dead. ‘may their memory be a blessing’–the memory of the deceased is honored, respected, and who they were is retold as inspiration to the next generation.

ben’s memory is a blessing. that’s extremely jewish. spiderman is inspired not just by the shame of his death, but by the moral teachings he’d given peter in life. and his name given to these babies is another part of it: babies named in spiderman’s honor are also very honestly and truly named in his honor, and continue to be blessings to the world.

it’s very joyous, i think. very sweet.

Dear Mr. Gaiman,

I wish to congratulate you on writing a children's book I can't possibly share with my children, because I am sobbing by the second page.

"Blueberry Girl" echoes so many of the prayers I have whispered in the quiet of the middle of the night, and many of the prayers I have offered silently because I could not find the words. Thank you for giving me the words for future prayers.

In order to make this an "ask", was it more or less difficult to write "Blueberry Girl" than, say, "Instructions"?
