i really love our generation’s joke trend of like, very calm but incredibly inflated hyperbole. like nobody says “oh she’s pretty” anymore we say “i would willingly let her murder me” and everyone is just like “lol same”

This reminds me of the time when I was on vacation with my family and we were hiking, and after using a rest stop, the conversation turned to the grossness of outhouses and port-a-potties, and I said that if I ever got splashback from a port-a-potty, “my soul would depart my body.” My parents found that hilarious, and my dad commented that my generation can be so clever with words bc he would only think to say something like “It would be disgusting” which doesn’t convey the sentiment nearly as well as “my soul would depart my body.”

This is marvelous. The purpose of language is to communicate ideas and information. So if your intended recipient understands the idea you’re trying to convey, you’re doing it right. That’s the only rule that actually matters.

All grammar and spelling rules are efforts to codify methods of communication for maximum clarity and widest possible audience.

Communicating in memes is and ignoring “conventional” language rules is perfectly fine if everyone you’re addressing knows the same memes. Operating on non-standard rules is just having a dialect. People do it all the time. They’re not wrong, they’re just regional.

Bonus if there’s people who you actively want not to get it, and you can use memes they don’t know.

Language always changes and evolves over time, and diverges by regions into dialects. Usually it takes decades, even generations. But with the internet we get to watch it happen in real time and evolve in years rather than generations, and social media sites are functioning as linguistic regions. Wales, the American south east, Tumblr, and Facebook each have a dialect.

I’ve been here since the 90s and Ive watched memes and references come and go, and others endure and evolve. I understand Tumblr, but I don’t speak 4-Chan, and I think that’s fantastic.

Right well, bloody hell the slow slog of the first half of the season finally paid off. So many moments I found myself holding my breath. That opening scene was difficult to watch, being disabled myself I’ve always known we were victims of the holocaust but I cannot even name a piece of television or film that actually showed the violence or abuse and dehumanisation disabled people endured. So while I winced watching the scene, I applaud the show for showing the many different minorities that were (still are) subject to the plight for the ‘perfect society’

The other scene that broke me, and no one seems to be talking about, is poor Luke having to watch a father reunite with his daughter then watching a plane full of little girls (by the way, were there any boys on the plane?) walk off one by one, hoping one of them would be Hannah. Only to be immediately told that this was ‘his June’s’ doing. He must be so confused as to why June couldn’t/didn’t get hannah out despite her tapes saying she would.

The scene that gave me the chills: Some of the women coming back to June and grabbing rocks to perform they’re own stoning ritual gave me life. Turning the tables on the ghastly procedure to take down their enemies instead of their friends was just powerful.

To the people who are pissed that Nick was hardly in the season or that June’s last thought was her, Luke and Hannah, please re-evaluate why you’re watching the show. It’s about what can happen when women work together especially in a society that favours men and their needs/wants. And given the social climate of the world, this is so much more prevalent and important than a shipping war. Nameste.

The only thing i need less of in season 4 is close ups of June. it’s gone beyond a cinematography style now and become almost a parody 😂

Do people have any theories for next season, I’ve heard rumblings of June not taking the contraception so she might be pregnant with Commander Lawrence’s child and therefore, would be saved from the wall as *in my best Lydia voice* “the gift of a child is the most precious of them all.”

Also how did Serena get her hands on Nichole? I’m not even gonna go into that.

The boys were wearing gray. And Luke was probably thinking that but on the tape she said she was trying to get Hannah so it must have went through his mind that she evidently couldn’t get to Hannah hence why June herself wasn’t on that plane. She’s not leaving Gilead without her.
