Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.

If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.

Also I've yet to see evidence of a single AI checker that actually stands up in terms of reliability.

These things are being used uncritically to check people's academic work or articles submitted to journals and returning a result of AI use even though AI checkers will claim AI use on passages from novels written before computers existed.

I need you people to understand, this is Golic Vulcan. Which is a noncanonical fan project, based on using elements of props from the show to create an entire constructed language with, I believe, three constructed scripts. (Technically they’re all variants of one script…in the sense that Hebrew and Arabic script are both versions of Aramaic.)

Yes!! Mark Gardner created the vast majority of the conlang (based on about six sentences in the films), and Britton Watkins of Korsaya.org created the alphabets. Vulcan calligraphy is the only one I know, but I’ve been playing with that for over ten years, and I can translate basically anything if I have Gardner’s dictionary handy! Sometimes I have get a little creative though lol

I do worry that the intense popularity of Heated Rivalry is shifting the expectations for romance smut writers in a direction current publishing expectations don't support.

Erotic romance, including M/M, is often written quickly with a focus on the primary dynamic so the writer can move on to the next book. So they can make enough money to keep writing.

They aren't necessarily expecting to be analyzed by every YouTube channel with every choice being questioned.

The problem started in season one. GR told the writers that he wanted to do an (one, 1, singular) episode that focused on Wesley, but he was open to what that was. So a bunch of writers wrote a Wesley episode, turned them in, and GR was going to pick one (1, singular).

Then there was a writers strike.

This left GR and the production team struggling to keep the production going. Oh, but you know what? There were a bunch of finished scripts that were just laying there.

So in the end GR used them all (ALL! Multiple) . So instead of the Adventures of the Officers of the Starship Enterprise, viewers were suddenly seeing the Awesome Adventures of Wesley the Wonder Kid. He saved the ship five times in a row!

I was 5 or 6 when it first aired and Wesley was one of my first crushes. So I'd want that t-shirt too.

In the Variety interview cited he does separately say that he doesn’t necessarily oppose generative AI in all cases, but it’s ambiguous whether he means that generative AI is being used for this project specifically, since MASSIVE is AI in the same way video game NPCs are AI, and he seems to not make a distinction.

something i think would make a lot of historical romance more accurate & interesting is the realization that people are less likely to totally disparage the ethical & social values of their time than they are to use those values to defend whatever it is they want to do

a woman is less likely to go "it's stupid that women are expected to be modest" than she is to go "there is nothing immodest about a woman going out without a chaperone" or even "i can go out without a chaperone because i am so modest"

people also seem less likely to see someone's shitty behavior as reflecting a shitty society than they are to view that behavior as being out of accordance with that society - e.g. a father who's excessively controlling of his daughters' marriage prospects isn't, in her mind, acting that way because he lives in a repressive patriarchal culture, but is actually outdated in his values - his cruelty is unmodern, ungentlemanly, stuck in the past, barbaric. we might think he's upholding the values of his culture perfectly, but the people around him who took issue with his behavior probably wouldn't see it that way

There's this legal theory (bear with me here!!) that says, basically, that you can make a general moral principal connect to pretty much any argumentative position you want. So, for example, you can start with "modesty is a core virtue for women" as a moral principal, and that can lead you to 1) "so women should not go out in public because being in public is immodest", 2) "so it's neutral for women to go out in public because being in public is not immodest", 3) "so women should go out in public to demonstrate their modesty and spread that virtue," etc etc. It all depends on the reasoning and evidence you choose.

In the legal field, this is how you get lawyers on opposing sides of a case both citing freedom, or public safety, or justice, as the value at the basis of their argument: they both think that that value is important or particularly compelling for the decision-maker they're appealing to, so they have to find reasoning and evidence that allows their opposite arguments to both lay claim to it. (A lot of the time that reasoning and evidence is incoherent "transcendental nonsense," as one of the originators of this theory Felix Cohen called it. But that's a subject for a different rant.)

In writing fiction, as OP demonstrates so elegantly, this theory can help draw the connection between the values of a character's culture and upbringing, and the decisions and stances the author has them take. Rarely, people's core values are different from the prevailing ones of their society. But much more often, they're working from the same value, and reaching a different conclusion than the people around them/their past self/the antagonists, etc. What kinds of life experiences and personality characteristics have led to that difference? That's where you get a really solid character arc imo.

Format & Length - Is your work art, video, podfic, etc? Does it use a particular format like a Drabble or 5+1?

Characters - What is going on with each of your major characters? If you had to describe them with one or two adjectives, what would you pick? (Format as [Adjective] [Character Name].)

Relationships - What is going on with each of your major relationships? Are there any relationship tropes like Slow Burn or Enemies to Lovers in your story?

Tropes - Are there any tropes or common story elements in your story that haven't been tagged yet? If your work was on TV tropes, what are the first things you would add?

Sex - If your work includes sex, what kink(s) and specific act(s) does it involve?

Remember: you can always look at the drop-down menu for suggestions. But! If you want to tag something that doesn't appear on the drop-down menu, you can & should write in a new tag!

Its also great for "here's a thing that happens in my story/i want to warn readers about, is there a tag for that?" (Or even "this tag i already know about doesn't suit my purposes for xyz reasons. What can i do instead?")
