Reblogging for that linguistics nerdery link!
Gross porn blogs:
What is it about my page that entices you? I’m not interested! Get lost!
The bots are using tumblr to scam Google.
Let’s say someone is looking for porn and they put “wife caught her husband cheating,” into Google. There are a lot of porn sites (and some news sites) with that title. So Google has to decide which order to show them in, because most of the time, people pick something off the first few pages of Google.
Google wants to have the very best “wife caught her husband cheating” (or whatever else you search for) sites on the first page of the search. Google has several ways to try and decide which site are the best, but one of them is that it looks at how popular it is by seeing how many other websites link to it. If a lot of other sites are linking to it, it was probably useful to them, so Google will put it on the front page.
So if I’m a sleazy pornsite owner, I could create like a thousand websites and make them all link to my “wife caught her husband cheating” site, and act like a whole bunch of different websites thought it was pretty great. They’d be like “xdfgt .com”, “xdfgy .com”, “xdfgh .com,” just nonsense addresses nobody else was using, or whatever. I’d try to make Google think my site was awesome, because all these other websites are linking to it.
But Google has already caught on to that. Google would know “xdfgt .com” was a crappy fake website, because nobody else is linking to “xdfgt .com”. Any website that is only linked to by crap websites is also crap, as far as Google is concerned. Google won’t put it on the first pages of search results.
So instead let’s imagine the sleazy pornsite owner creates a thousand fake tumblrs instead, like “xdfgt.tumblr .com” and “xdfgy.tumblr .com” and “xdfgh.tumblr .com” and just puts one or two posts on them to add links to the “wife caught her husband cheating” porn site. Google can still tell those tumblrs are crap websites, because nobody else is linking to them. But the difference is … on tumblr, the sleazy pornsite owner can make your website link to him.
Let’s say your tumblr is “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com”. If “xdfgt.tumblr .com” likes one of your posts, there’s link on your blog to “xdfgt.tumblr .com.” Somewhere on “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” it will say “xdfgt liked this” with a link from your blog to “xdfgt.tumblr .com.”
Google’s bot looks at “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” and it sees that your blog is a good website. People are linking to it (talking to you or reblogging from you), you write like an actual human being, you have nice pictures, you update sometimes, you aren’t a bot. So Google decides your blog isn’t a crappy scam website. Then it sees the link to “xdfgt.tumblr .com” and it thinks “oh hey, a nice website with good stuff written by a real human linked to this “xdfgt.tumblr .com” I guess maybe “xdfgt.tumblr .com” is a decent website too.”
Then it looks at “xdfgt.tumblr .com” and it sees the link to the porn site with “wife caught her husband cheating”, and it says, “well, I guess that “wife caught her husband cheating” site is a good site. I know that because there’s a good site linking to it here at “xdfgt.tumblr .com.” I know “xdfgt.tumblr .com” is a good site because “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” linked to it, and I know “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” is a good site because it is updated and writes like a real person and people talk to it and link to it.”
So basically the porn bots are using the fact that you have a good blog to make themselves look better and to try and trick Google’s bot into thinking they’re very popular and it should put them at the top of its list when people search Google for porn.
It’s really annoying! It would be really nice if the people running tumblr figured out a way to not be free advertising for every sleazy porn site on the internet
source.
hey wow thats actually really useful! and its written in a way that i (a bird with no knowledge of the wizardly internal workings of a website) can understand!
FINALLY AN EXPLANATION
I read this when it came past my dash a while ago, and I regret not reboggling it right away. Good info! Now I make "blocking random porn blog followers" a weekly ritual.

Omfg. Noel Fielding & Eddie Izzard. I can die.
Even for someone who has been researching and writing about misogyny for over a decade, it is hard to comprehend the level of obsessive hate that had to go into the attack on actress Leslie Jones. The 48-year-old comedian and actress became a big star over the summer, with her breakout role in “Ghostbusters” and her public stint as America’s funniest Olympics enthusiast.
But to the racist, misogynist internet, just letting Jones and her fans enjoy this moment could not stand. You see, Jones is black, female, and middle-aged, and therefore, in their eyes, she must be punished and humiliated for her success. On Wednesday, hackers attacked Jones’s website, replacing her regular content with stolen nude photos, private information, and racist gorilla imagery.
This comes on top of a summer-long campaign of Twitter harassment that was so vile that it drove Jones off Twitter, forcing the company — which is notoriously reluctant to do much about internet harassment — to actually take measures to stem the tide of abuse.
It is tempting, of course, to write off the attacks on Jones as the work of a few bad apples, an unfortunate artifact of an internet that allows a small number of people to get a lot of attention simply by being the absolute worst. I personally wish that were the case.
But this story goes straight back to the presidential race. You see, one of the main reasons that Jones is a favorite target of the worst people on the internet is because she was chosen as one by Milo Yiannopoulos, a writer and editor at Breitbart. He spent so much time and effort riling up the rats against her that it got him suspended permanently by Twitter, in fact. And Yiannopoulos’s boss Stephen Bannon now runs the Donald Trump campaign.
Make no mistake: Yiannopoulos got his job at Breitbart not despite, but because of his skills at whipping up the sociopathic internet into a frenzy of resentment at even the hint that they might have to share the world with women and people of color.
Under Bannon, Yiannopoulos was brought on to be the editor of their supposed “tech” vertical, even though there’s no evidence that he knows much about tech and despite his history of bashing video game players.
Yiannopoulos got his gig after doing the yeoman’s work of riling up basement dwellers on Twitter, cheerleading a phenomenon known as “Gamergate,” when a bunch of misogynists ran around the internet attacking female gamers for the crimes of being critical of sexism in video games or believing they have a right to break up with a dude if they want to. His real talent is mining the resentments of reactionary losers, and encouraging them to bash any women, especially women of color, whose success reminds them of what losers they really are.
The intended message behind taunting a woman with nude pictures and racist imagery isn’t subtle: “No matter how funny and well-liked and successful you are, we are still better than you because you’re a black woman.”
This is what feminists are talking about when we say things like sexual violence and harassment aren’t really about men being sexually incontinent or bad communicators. No one accidentally hacks someone’s website with racist jokes. No one posts pictures to humiliate someone because they were confused about consent.
We live in a culture where a lot of men think that a woman’s success diminishes them. We live in a culture where a lot of white people think the same of black people’s success. We live in a culture where some white men think the best way to react to this ridiculous fear is to turn sex into a weapon to hurt women.
I want this to be a small phenomenon, but this is why one of the major parties of this country has nominated an unrepentant misogynist and bigot to be their presidential candidate.
If you want a full eyeball of how Trump Country thinks, look at the reaction of Drudge readers to this story on Twitter. It’s all racist jokes and mockery of Jones’s body and sexuality. Not a whiff of understanding that she is a human being. Not even a moment of concern for a woman who is being victimized like this, even though she has literally done nothing wrong — on the contrary, she has made a career out of trying to make people happy. Just dehumanizing, racist garbage.
They aren’t the majority of Americans. Most Americans are better than this. But if you want to know how it is that Trump still manages to pack his rallies full of people, here is your answer.
I am 34 years old and I love this film. Because for the first time, I’m seeing woman on-screen acting the way I act, and talking the way I talk, and being weird and intelligent (I’m definitely the former and I like to hope I’m a little bit of the latter!). And while I would have LOVED to have seen this film as, say, a ten-year-old, another huge part of it is these women are MY AGE. These people are all in their thirties at least! In fact, aside from Kate McKinnon the main actors are all in their forties.
To me, they say “You can be clever and nerdy and weird and all that stuff even when you’re an adult”. The relationship between the four of them is not like Sex and the City, or Friends, or any other female-led group comedy. They don’t spend all their time talking about men, or sex, or clothes, they say FUCKING PHYSICS MAN THIS IS BATSHIT HOW AWESOME RIGHT??
Plus they aren’t infantalised for being this way. These are women with life experience and PhDs, they’re not “reliving their childhood” or being some kind of manic pixie dream girls, they are grown women with education and life experience behind them.
They also show how you can take a huge amount of pride in something that you find very important. And that it’s ok and GOOD to pursue self-improvement through being really passionate about something. They talk about their work in an OMG THIS IS AMAZING AND WE DO ALL THIS FOR FUN! way rather than a Devil Wears Prada career-ladder driven way. They’re clever and passionate, show the best elements of having female besties as an adult and they tell nerdy women like me to just go on and be nerdy and old and seriously it’s FINE!
So a shout-out to all the over-30 Ghostbusters fans, let’s all go and be clever and weird and gorgeous like the amazing women we all are <3

The official trailer for Hidden Figures is here!
HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
As I scrolled by, I assumed this was a screenshot of despair! Crikey!

The lovely @etave tagged me, and I decided that rather than putting off doing this meme, then forgetting about it, then feeling awkward about it, I’d just do it. (sorry to everyone who’s ever tagged me!)
COUNTRIES I’VE LIVED IN → USA, and one amazing year in Italy.
FAVOURITE FANDOM → I’m kind of a fandom outsider, especially since I haven’t created content lately. Jane Austen and history fandoms I guess? Closely followed by Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and Steven Universe.
LANGUAGES YOU SPEAK → English and rusty Italian. I can also read Latin, Ancient Greek, and French.
FAVOURITE FILM OF 2015 → Close tie between Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens
LAST ARTICLE YOU READ → My browser history tells me it was a Jezebel piece about how much Victoria and Albert loved to fuck. One I read this week that really stuck with me is a piece about the San Francisco woman who started that city’s obsession with fancy toast. Rather than the twee hipster story you might expect, it’s a story about building community in the face of mental illness. It seems to have inspired Lolly Whitehall’s backstory in Orange is the New Black.
SHUFFLE YOUR MUSIC LIBRARY AND PUT YOUR FIRST THREE SONGS HERE → This should be funny: “E Ajnabi” by A. R. Rahman from the Dil Se soundtrack (a Bollywood movie); “Tightrope” by Janelle Monae; “Number Three” by They Might be Giants. Much less embarrassing than I feared!
LAST THING YOU BOUGHT ONLINE → A Kate Beaton T shirt (present for my husband’s birthday)
ANY PHOBIAS OR FEARS → Where to start? Cave crickets, Dying alone, failure. . .
HOW WOULD YOUR FRIENDS DESCRIBE YOU → Alternately social and completely hermit-like.
HOW WOULD YOUR ENEMIES DESCRIBE YOU? → An insufferable know-it-all, probably?
WHO WOULD YOU TAKE A BULLET FOR? → My husband, Taika Waititi, and pretty much all my (few) friends.
IF YOU HAD MONEY TO SPARE WHAT WOULD YOU BUY FIRST? → Health insurance, including dental. A girl can dream!

Yup, that is definitely how bats work.

there are actually so many good things about the new Star Trek movie, but here’s a few that you folks might be interested in.
No womanizing Captain Kirk.
It gives ample time to all the main cast.
Doesn’t focus on Kirk alone.
Lots of Bones/Spock dialogue and development.
No weird underwear shots.
No obnoxious lens flares.
A plot that revolves around promoting friendship, peace, and diversity.
No sexist jokes.
Idris Elba.
A wholesome, fun, positive, space adventure that isn’t weighed down by tiresome stereotypes or edginess.
The best goddamn use of “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys.
Please watch it. Please. They know what they’re doing now. Give the movie your money because goddamn it deserves it.
This movie just. GETS IT.
It's taken me a long time to get over how awful I felt while watching STID. I wasn't planning to see the new one, but posts like these are reviving my interest!

*screaming* IT’S FINALLY DONE!1!1!1
Seriously, I was beginning to lose the will to live. It did develop one small air bubble AFTER I sealed it, and a small flake of paint came off of Gregg’s hair, but given the other issues I had to deal with throughout the process, I THINK I can live with those things. Please excuse my use of cleavage cam, that freaking thing is heavy!
In case the glitter is too dense, inside we’ve got Gregg, the funk, and all things that are good (Bailey’s [mmmm, creamy], watercolors, and a couple of bridal magazines so Gregg can pick himself out a nice wedding dress) plus The Funk. I hope he’ll be happy.

FOR ALL MY FOLLOWERS OVER 30!!!
This is 100% accurate!
We no longer give a fuck, can buy all the things we want and know that at the end of the day fighting with people on the internet does not matter! You can make life-long friendships over the simplest of common interests and also be a confidant to those who need it.
Fangirling as a grown-ass adult has been the best thing ever!
Fangirling is even better over 40!
And I can guarantee it only gets better by the time you’re 60! You’ve seen it ALL, and literally give NO fucks anymore about the flame wars, you’ve got friends that have been in your life for decades, and when a newbie is having a problem, chances are you’ve got a solution, or at least a knowledgeable shoulder to cry on.
everything @ceallaig1 said.
I’m only in my 30s, but I’ve been able to go to Germany twice for conventions, which would’ve been unfathomable, let alone unheard of, when I was a teenager or in my 20s.
Being a fangirl in your 30s is kind of fucking amazing.
this this this, thank you!
Yes, I honestly believe being a fangirl keeps us young (okay, maybe not in body, but definitely in mind!)
30s? Pffttt. ;)
I love the posts that bring out all the tumblr elders! Also, I wholeheartedly agree.
Man I hate it when people use the pronoun “you” as a singular pronoun in an informal setting. “You” is plural, unless thou dost speak to an unfamiliar person. The correct singular second person pronoun is “thou” in most cases. Grammar never changes. Pronouns must always stay one way until the end of time. Learn thy proper English. *sigh* Kids these days.
If thou this mistake shouldst make on thine own blog, then know, villain, that thou art a dirty descriptivist, and no friend of mine. Ne'er should language itself alter, it doth remain fixèd as such, untouch’d by change. Wouldst thou, vile descriptivist, that we forget the heritage of our great tongue? Nay, say I. Thou art but a dickhead who sayest so.

Bwahaha that’s it, that’s prescriptivism in a nutshell. This post cracks me up so much also because it’s like a refresher of my History of English module from way back when.
@vox takes on the trope of the hypercompetent female sidekick. You know her – the one who’s the smartest, toughest and most capable yet ends up being rescued by the less talented, but extremely straight, white, cisgender and male hero.
This intersects well with discussions about the pay gap and obstacles women face in their careers. For those of us who aren’t straight white cisgender men – the persistence of being typecast as not-the-hero (or the boss, or the leader, or the expert commenter) despite qualifications, talents and capabilities is a lived reality.
Noel Fielding: Supermodel.
I want a top like the one he's wearing, but with Luxury Comedy characters on it! It's already so close!
