wiktionary lists "isolation" as the antonym of "context," I don't know if this is linguistically true. I suppose "in isolation" is the opposite of "in context" but it doesn't transfer to their noun forms . "context" is not listed as an antonym of "isolation." it's not worth starting a talk page about

a little explication of my references here for fun and because i'm putting off an essay
gift giving, especially for heroic deeds, is a super common theme in OE literature. it shows up predominantly in beowulf, as well as often in the shorter poems. the vocab i chose for this post is specifically referencing the 'ubi sunt' passage of the wanderer, which is fairly well known as far as OE poetry goes (the wanderer is also one of my very favorite pieces of OE literature). the narrator is mourning the life he used to have and asks where the things most important to him have gone. it goes:
Hwær cwom mearg? Hwær cwom mago? Hwær cwom maþþumgyfa?
Hwær cwom symbla gesetu? Hwær sindon seledreamas?
Eala beorht bune! Eala byrnwiga!
Eala þeodnes þrym!
which roughly translates to:
where is the horse? where is the youth? where is the treasure giver?
where are the feast seats? where are the hall joys?
oh bright cup! oh mailed warrior!
oh prince's glory!
because this post is about maþþumgyfan (treasure givers), I reused þrym(lic) (glory/glorious), bune (cup), geset (seat), and symbel (feast). i didn't even intend to do this reference at first, but as i worked on it, I noticed more and more vocab aligning, and so i did a bit of editing to make it line up better. for example bune is an somewhat obscure, exclusively poetic word for cup, that i used instead of the more common cuppe or fæt
people understand that Spanish speakers speak different dialects of the Spanish language but don’t understand that black people speak a dialect of the English language

I just want to state for the record that this is completely uncontroversial among linguists. It’s the first day of sociolinguistics class.

Magilinguistics and magiconlinguistics are so underrated. The idea that the specific language and syntax used to cast a spell can alter the efficiency and flow of a spell is amazing; it’s honestly infuriating how many people, including many mages, think Latin is the only valid conjuring language even though glossolalia is a WELL-DOCUMENTED PHENOMENON. I use many other languages in various spells and it’s really fun. Would recommend.

you have got to understand that your mother tongue is not the model of language. all your words have secret histories and layers of meaning just the same as other people's words. the word you think of as just a word has etymology, it wasn't handed down from God as a finished word. English doesn't have a word for movie you have to either refer to the recording medium or use a short version of "moving picture", isn't that cute?
In English your heart and lungs live inside a cage made out of your bones, which is either deep or creepy, depending on how you squint.
They also use the word for those bones to refer to the structural support of a roof or a ship's hull, thus demonstrating a deep spiritual understanding of boats and houses as living beings.
They’ve been rebuilding the Tower of Babel, but this time they have a team of linguists on site. Every time God smites the builders and invents a dozen new languages, the linguists have a dozen decently sized translations in about a month and work can start up again.

While it's nonsensical using the literal definitions of the words, I think the sentence "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously" can have a (somewhat) coherent meaning when using the words figuratively.
"Colorless" can mean 'dull' or 'lacking passion'
"Green" can mean new and inexperienced or untested
We'll use the literal definition of "ideas"
"Sleep" can mean inactive but ready to 'wake up' any moment, like a 'sleeping giant'. In the context of ideas it could be ideas that are unknown right now, but will become widespread and influential.
"Furiously" can mean in this context that whatever has been sleeping is very upset about that, and will be dangerous once it wakes up.
So "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously" can mean "Untested and dull ideas are currently unknown, but will be dangerous and vengeful if they ever become widespread."
