We have some backstory to Geoffrey that involves how the young lad met Ixis Naugus and how he tempted him to the dark side.
I don’t know if its nice that they’re finally elaborating on his backstory and reinstating him as a shifty anti-hero type, or if its trying too hard to shoehorn the wizard villain into the past motivations of this shifty character.
Once again I really must re-iterate that by the time of the present, Robotnik kept records of the fact that Naugus and Kodos conspired to start the war, records that Geoff would have surely had access to by the time of the first Robotnik’s death. Even if he started out this way, I find it really difficult to believe he’d continue buying Naugus’ line after the fact.
Not that I’m here to be the Grand Defender of Geoff’s Character, especially in light of Penders heinously tainting from twitter. I just feel like that part is being glossed over to justify Geoff serving Naugus in the present.
Geoff serving Naugus so easily could’ve been justified by one thing - Naugus would tell Geoff the harsh truth that the Kingdom of Acorn that he’s been so fervently loyal to for years has not given him what he truly desired in return, which is a status of greatness, prestige, and acclaim far ahead of Sonic and the Freedom Fighters, putting him directly at the right hand of the King or Queen. Naugus would promise him that should he take the throne and Geoff help him claim it, he can finally realize Geoff’s ambitions for him. Geoff is a narcissistic asshat who always valued the image and spoils of heroism while never possessing the heart of a true hero, a “shifty character” as @robotnikholmescomicblog puts it, so such a turn would’ve worked just fine without the need for nonsensical retcons.
