Portal was really way the fuck ahead of its time. Like, not just because of the whole portals thing although that was a super cool mechanic and it must have been really hard to balance the game design between keeping the player on track while not making them feel too railroaded, given that making portals almost anywhere is a key mechanic. But I mean with having Chell as a protagonist and how they handled it, cause like. Portal 1 came out in 2007. At that stage, if there was a woman in a video game (especially as a playable character), then the game made into a Thing. She was in a skirt, or wearing skimpy clothing, or her abilities weren’t for active combat, or her character revolved around men, or some combination of those.
And then you have Chell, where it just doesn’t matter. She’s wearing a bright orange jumpsuit the whole time. It’s a first person perspective. Her storyline is that she’s going to fuck shit up until she gets free. There’s no bullshit, they never make it weird, it’s never a Thing, there’s no reason for the player character to be a woman apart from the fact that half the people on earth are women. A male protagonist would have worked just as well without changing anything, and that’s why Chell as the protagonist was such a good thing. Gender was completely irrelevant in the setting, so the game never bothers to justify having a female protagonist. Why is the player character a woman? Because she is, now grab your portal gun and get testing.
Basically Portal is good shit
also contrary to 75% of the art of her chell is a WOC
