YES. It was 100% intentional. I highly recommend reading up on the making of this film. There was an incredible amount of care that went into the development.

They had Lakota consultants for the project, especially regarding the use of the Lakota language in the film (which is used sparsely, but when used is accurate).

It’s par for the course now to consult people belonging to a culture for projects representing it these days (i.e. Moana, Frozen 2, etc.) but it certainly wasn’t when Spirit came out in 2002.

This film is allegorical to its core.

It also shows it’s important to not leave nonhuman animals out of discussions of any sort of social change/problem. They are victims of the same violent, colonialist, patriarchal power structures every group of marginalized humans are. All oppression is interconnected, including between different groups of humans and between humans and nonhuman animals.

Spirit is a wonderful allegory to show racist, colonial violence and oppression but was something that literally happened, and still does happen to horses. in order to get horses to ‘accept’ being ridden or used we have to “break” them and abuse them into submission. Horses, even ones born in captivity, don’t want to be ridden; it’s painful and their bodies are not designed to hold a human on their back and they frequently die/get injured in horse races and competitions.

The mass slaughtering of bison was bad because it was used to starve and destroy native communities who depended on them for survival. But it was also bad for the bison because it nearly drove them to extinction, destroyed their social structures, and left their bodies to rot and spread disease.

Modern animal agriculture is bad because most of the land cleared for raising them or growing their food–especially cattle–is stolen indigenous land, and is a breeding ground for zoonotic diseases, and forces people to rely on animal products/exploitation when they otherwise wouldn’t need to or is actively harmful to their health (as in the case of milk being forced on kids in schools despite 70% of people being lactose intolerant and milk being terrible for health in general), and forces marginalized people to do the dangerous work of tending to and slaughtering the terrified, dangerous, & diseased animals, and actively hinders scientific & medicinal research because we continuously test on animals despite it being completely useless for determining whether or not something is good or bad for human health. But it’s also bad for the animals because do I even need to explain why?

The animals killed and used by people who need to for survival also don’t deserve to suffer and die, but there’s a massive difference between someone killing an animal because they don’t have accessible alternatives and someone eating a bacon double cheeseburger with a side of chicken tendies every day because trying new things is scary and they would rather not think about the consequences of their choices and especially between someone opressing one group in order to opress another.

In the end, Spirit and Rain got to be free and live with his family again. He didn’t stay with Little Creek to be exploited “nicer” because he didn’t want or deserve to be ridden at all. And that should be the goal for liberation for every marginalized group. Total liberation, not switching to only ‘nicer’ exploitation.

the zendaya thing isnt even a new phenomenon by any means!! the article mentions margot robbie wearing the taj mahal diamond as well, and in addition to that i also want to remind people that diljit dosanjh's request to wear the patiala necklace for the 2025 met gala was denied by cartier because they said it was in a museum and could not be loaned. however they had no issues at all loaning it to emma chamberlain, a white woman, for the 2022 met gala, while they turned down the request of a punjabi man who wanted it to honor his heritage.

this behavior is nothing new. the global south and everything in it - the people, the culture, our heritage - is seen as nothing more than a decoration or commodity to colonizers. i don't even need to bring up the koh i noor or the entire british museum; these examples are recent and egregious enough on their own.

of course this is not to imply that any of the people involved here - zendaya, margot robbie, or emma chamberlain - had any sort of malicious intentions. but the ignorance is just as bad in my opinion. the ignorance is just as harmful, if not more. because it means we are not even an afterthought. it means that the real people and histories and heritages of the global south do not even register when these people are putting together looks for their movie premiers and met gala appearances. everything is just reduced down to a shiny piece of jewelry whose history they need not bother with. it's just a continued reminder of the way colonization affects us all even long after independence, of how barely-healed wounds keep being reopened even decades later. even now, we are being denied connections to our histories and heritages while they are freely being given out to those that have nothing to do with it and don't care for it. and i'm sick of it.

I've been seeing a lot of nonvegans talking about how bad AI data centers are for the environment and being a cause for climate change (which is true) but they never mention animal agriculture. now, idk which is worse, but in your opinion is animal ag still worse then AI or are they relatively both the same? and do you have any sources for it?

Animal agriculture is undeniably worse, but we should keep in mind that we are talking about two industries which are really not comparable in scale. Half of the planet's habitable land is used for agriculture, and of that land, if we combine global grazing land with the amount of cropland used for animal feed, 80% of it is for animal agriculture.

There are no direct comparison studies that I'm aware of, but AI, despite it's explosive expansion and hunger for resources, is still a very young industry. It may be that we'll be having a different conversation in 20 years, but right now, animal agriculture is orders of magnitude worse for the climate. The sheer scale involved is not even comparable.

Water use is the most cited metric with AI, so lets look at that. In 2023, U.S. data centers consumed about 228 billion gallons of water. The contribution of AI to this total is estimated to be between 15 to 20 percent, so about 45 billion gallons. 2023 appears to the be the most recent available data, so it is likely higher than that now. Animal agriculture in the USA alone consumes approximately 34 to 76 trillion gallons of freshwater annually.

GHG emissions is the other one people discuss, again AI is quite young so some of these measurements aren't reliable, but we think that AI contributes about 0.01% of global greenhouse gas emissions, at the moment. It is difficult to measure full end-to-end impact, though, since we've only just started to really track how this technology is using resources.

We have much more robust data sets for food production, which is responsible a full quarter of the world's GHG emissions, and 31% of that comes from animal agriculture, not including and use change or supply chain emissions from the production of crops for animal feed.

Again though, these figures don't mean a lot because AI is very new technology. We don't have a lot of long-term data on it's impact and how it may increase or even decrease if it becomes more efficient over time. It also just serves a totally different function, so it is less comparing apples to oranges and more like comparing apples to air conditioning units.

I think it is good to encourage people who are concerned about the environmental impact of AI to look into the impact of animal agriculture, as another good example of something they can avoid engaging in to lower their own footprint, and push for systematic change to address on a legislative level. However, I do think the way vegans frame this often turns people away. Sometimes I see vegans accuse people of not actually caring about the environment at all because they're not vegan, which I don't think is very helpful.

in light of billie eilish’s “hot take” about veganism, I’d just like to say I am so sick and tired of non-indigenous people using our communities and practices as an excuse, to hide behind their own shame when really they don’t give a shit about indigenous peoples. they don’t talk about us in any other aspect besides this one and it’s only to cover their own backs. indigenous communities that have to hunt for their own food for survival is very different than going into a supermarket and buying packaged meat. these communities have quotas, they use every part of the animal, and they are responsible for taking care of most of our ecosystem. any good, intersectional vegan knows this and understands that it would be very colonial of them to go into these spaces and try and change that. saying this, there are a lot of indigenous people who are vegans and they are largely ignored because it doesn’t fit their narrative of the “noble savage” which is also a racist view of indigenous people.

ok i’m SO sorry to hijack this post but if y’all liked this, plzplzplzplzPLEASE watch the new season!! they just released a new season set in modern day, they’re all aged up and dealing with more current events and ok sorry y’all get the full story SO

Cotton Hill, the angry little white-haired man shown above, is Hank’s father, as the dialogue indicates. Later in the series, Cotton has a baby with his new (much younger) wife Didi, meaning Hank has a new (much younger) half brother. Cotton, being the absolute demon that he was, names the new baby Good Hank. Literally. Legally. Like they call him GH for short.

In the original run, we only ever see GH as a baby, and Cotton eventually dies, never seeing his Good Hank grow up. But in the new season, we see GH again, now a 14 year old boy, and wouldn’t you know it, he’s grown up to be a rude, misogynistic kid. Since he won’t listen to his mom Didi (cuz the misogyny) and he has no real male role mode in his life, she asks Hank to take GH under his wing and see if he can course correct his little brother.

After a bit of an awkward start, GH reveals to Hank that he wants to attend a “personal development” seminar called ManMade, focusing on “The Four F-Bombs: Family, Faith, Finances, and Fitness,” put on by an influencer he really loves. In case it isn’t obvious enough yet, the influencer looks like this:

So they attend, because at first it just sounds like “good old-fashioned character building” to Hank. But once they’re there, the source of GH’s pivot to Cottonhood is revealed; the seminar focuses not on self improvement, but on blaming the women in these men’s lives for all of their problems (shocking, i know). Hank, having had his daily dose of Respect Women Juice with breakfast, tries to speak up against the brainwashing, but is shot down by GH himself (fueled by insecurity and peer pressure), who snaps at him so aggressively, Hank has a full-on Cotton flashback in the middle of the workshop:

And I’m kinda sorry about it but I’m gonna go ahead and spoil the episode for you because it’s just. So Good. So Hank’s shaken up, but he knows he still has to do something about this. So he talks to the women in Eli [Not-Andrew-Tate]’s life and finds out enough about who he is as a person to convince GH and the rest of the guys in the workshop that Eli is nothing but a cruel blowhard, with Hank backing himself up with the unimpeachable argument that he’s literally the only one in the room with a wife. The workshop fellas all take a more critical look at themselves and leave ManMade behind, with GH having a newfound respect for his older brother, and women, kinda; as they leave GH cheerily suggests “We should do something nice for our bitches!” to which Hank replies “Yeah, I think we have a little more work to do.”

But so! Later on, they’re back home, and Didi stops by to pick up GH. Instead of the usual cold shoulder, she’s greeted by a warm hug from her son, and a junker car in Hank’s driveway that he bought as a project for him and GH to work on together, to eventually give to GH as his first car. The message is clear: the kid’s not perfect, but he’s on a good track. We’ve saved him from the worst. And so, as Didi pulls out of Hank’s driveway, the Hill brothers share one last look and wave goodbye to each other, and the episode ends with this sequence I’ll let speak for itself:

IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic. 

Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.
