An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
This is my first attempt at AO3, and Iâm kind of going to coast off this one shot and try and flesh these characters and this story out. I am fuelled by attention so give it a read and hit me with some questions or something I guess?
I do think part of the reason we don't have standardized clothes sizing is because clothes are. Really complicated. Most of them do actually have more than one aspect of fit. It makes sense that companies resist printing like the dozens of measurements they use to make, say, a pair of jeans. On one level, it's just a lot for a customer to think about and consider. And then on the other...
They don't want people to understand that "the problem" they have is that the jeans aren't made for them. Manufacturers prefer for them to continue buying jeans they don't like and feeling like their body is the problem.
But if you had to list all the measurements, it would quickly get really obvious suddenly how many decisions got made as "these jeans are actually only for people of one body type" and "wait, all the jeans basically are made for this same body type". Which might make more room for competitors to actually make jeans for different body types! Can't be having that!
I just get so upset! People constantly have the same problems with clothes they own and conclude that it's an inherent problem with their body, often incorrectly assuming it has to do with having more fat/muscles even when it's about a completely different measurement. Because nobody fucking knows about crotch length!!! They don't think about it!
I hate that thing some people do where it's like. "I left my wallet on the table to see if you'd say anything" or "I wanted to see if you'd wash the car if I stopped doing it"
Cause like
I dont know about anyone else
But I am perpetually hovering three inches above the strong subconscious belief that everyone knows what they're doing at all times except me, so if you change your normal patterns and I notice, then I will assume it is an intentional choice with a thought-out plan behind it and I will avoid interfering
And if I don't notice, because I won't, because why would I, because not much bothers me and if you don't say anything to indicate you are bothered then how would I KNOW
please help me- i used to be pretty smart but iâm having so much trouble grasping the concept of diegetic vs non-diegetic bdsm!
gfkjldghfd okay first of all I'm sorry for the confusion, if you're not finding anything on the phrase it's because I made it up and absolutely nobody but me ever uses it, but I haven't found a better way to express what I'm trying to say so I keep using it. but now you've given me an excuse to ramble on about some shit that is only relevant to me and my deeply inefficient way of talking and by god I'm going to take it.
SO. the way diegetic and non-diegetic are normally used is to talk about music and sound design in movies/tv shows. in case you aren't familiar with that concept, here's a rundown:
diegetic sound is sound that happens within the world of the movie/show and can be acknowledged by the characters, like a song playing on the stereo during a driving scene, or sung on stage in Phantom of the Opera. it's also most other sounds that happen in a movie, like the sounds of traffic in a city scene, or a thunderclap, or a marching band passing by. or one of the three stock horse sounds they use in every movie with a horse in it even though horses don't really vocalize much in real life, but that's beside the point, the horse is supposed to be actually making that noise within the movie's world and the characters can hear it whinnying.
non-diegetic sound is any sound that doesn't exist in the world of the movie/show and can't be perceived by the characters. this includes things like laugh tracks and most soundtrack music. when Duel of Fates plays in Star Wars during the lightsaber fight for dramatic effect, that's non-diegetic. it exists to the audience, but the characters don't know their fight is being backed by sick ass music and, sadly, can't hear it.
the lines can get blurry between the two, you've probably seen the film trope where the clearly non-diegetic music in the title sequence fades out to the same music, now diegetic and playing from the character's car stereo. and then there are things like Phantom of the Opera as mentioned above, where the soundtrack is also part of the plot, but Phantom of the Opera does also have segments of non-diegetic music: the Phantom probably does not have an entire orchestra and some guy with an electric guitar hiding down in his sewer just waiting for someone to break into song, but both of those show up in the songs they sing down there.
now, on to how I apply this to bdsm in fiction.
if I'm referring to diegetic bdsm what I mean is that the bdsm is acknowledged for what it is in-world. the characters themselves are roleplaying whatever scenarios their scenes involve and are operating with knowledge of real life rules/safety practices. if there's cnc depicted, it will be apparent at some point, usually right away, that both characters actually are fully consenting and it's all just a planned scene, and you'll often see on-screen negotiation and aftercare, and elements of the story may involve the kink community wherever the characters are. Love and Leashes is a great example of this, 50 Shades and Bonding are terrible examples of this, but they all feature characters that know they're doing bdsm and are intentional about it.
if I'm talking about non-diegetic bdsm, I'm referring to a story that portrays certain kinks without the direct acknowledgement that the characters are doing bdsm. this would be something like Captive Prince, or Phantom of the Opera again, or the vast majority of bodice ripper type stories where an innocent woman is kidnapped by a pirate king or something and totally doesn't want to be ravished but then it turns out he's so cool and sexy and good at ravishing that she decides she's into it and becomes his pirate consort or whatever it is that happens at the end of those books. the characters don't know they're playing out a cnc or D/s fantasy, and in-universe it's often straight up noncon or dubcon rather than cnc at all. the thing about entirely non-diegetic bdsm is that it's almost always Problematicâą in some way if you're not willing to meet the story where it's at, but as long as you're not judging it by the standards of diegetic bdsm, it's just providing the reader the same thing that a partner in a scene would: the illusion of whatever risk or taboo floats your boat, sometimes to extremes that can't be replicated in real life due to safety, practicality, physics, the law, vampires not being real, etc. it's consensual by default because it's already pretend; the characters are vehicles for the story and not actually people who can be hurt, and the reader chose to pick up the book and is aware that nothing in it is real, so it's all good.
this difference is where people tend to get hung up in the discourse, from what I've observed. which is why I started using this phrasing, because I think it's very crucial to be able to differentiate which one you're talking about if you try to have a conversation with someone about the portrayal of bdsm in media. it would also, frankly, be useful for tagging, because sometimes when you're in the mood for non-diegetic bodice ripper shit you'd call the police over in real life, it can get really annoying to read paragraphs of negotiation and check-ins that break the illusion of the scene and so on, and the opposite can be jarring too.
it's very possible to blur these together the same way Phantom of the Opera blurs its diegetic and non-diegetic music as well. this leaves you even more open to being misunderstood by people reading in bad faith, but it can also be really fun to play with. @not-poignant writes fantastic fanfic, novels, and original serials on ao3 that pull this off really well, if you're okay with some dark shit in your fiction I would highly recommend their work. some of it does get really fucking dark in places though, just like. be advised. read the tags and all that.
but yeah, spontaneous writer plug aside, that's what I mean.
As someone who was alive when Bob Ross (and William Alexander before him â thatâs where the approach is from) was on PBS, I can 100% testify that you can paint along with him.
You may need to learn how to set up your paints and such⊠but this is what people did, live, while the show aired. Thatâs what the show was for. I had family members create lovely works of art they enjoyed, which I still have on my walls, because William Alexander and Bob Ross both said:
SCREW METICULOUS CLASSICAL ART PRACTICES â JUST GRAB A PALETTE KNIFE AND BIG OLD BRUSH AND PAINT!
They freed a whole generation of people who were taught to paint detail and realism and exact representation of reality â people who largely gave up this kind of thing because it got tedious.
I watched the joy of family members as they rediscovered art as a messy fun spontaneous half hour activity.

âscientists donât want you knowâ is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know
pink - commander and the leader. probably really nice and sweet
blue - probably very close to pink, is either 100 iq smarty pants but shy or very tough and cool
yellow/orange - very happy and positive. can vary from being newbie of the group to be older and mature, probably known as the beautiful one
purple - mysterious, usually starts off as a rival or joins the group later, but is definitely known to the members as another MG. Probably has a softer side they donât show
I think itâs funny how Mormon God was like âlook polygamy is super important and I am telling you my followers to practice it even in the face of persecutionâ and then 40 years later Congress said Utah wouldnât be given statehood as long as the LDS practiced polygamy and Mormon God was like âOk tell everyone I changed my mindâ
Peru's public prosecutor says many of their citizens are victims of deception, lured by â the promise of jobs.
List of countries that claim Russia has trafficked their citizens, luring them to the country under false pretenses before forcing them to fight against Ukraine:
Bangladesh: "Russia is exploiting people in vulnerable situations to sustain its war effort." 100 sent to frontlines, 34 confirmed dead.
Botswana: "The government of Botswana has launched an investigation into reports that two young citizens were lured to fight in the RussiaâUkraine war under the pretext of short-term military training in Russia."
Burundi: "African cannon fodder." At least 6 Burundi citizens have been killed in the war after being lured to Russia with promises of security jobs.
Cameroon: 16 Cameroon citizens have been killed in the war.
Colombia: now one of the central recruitment hubs in Latin America.
Cuba: the other big hub.
Egypt: an Egyptian citizen was the sole survivor of his squad being wiped out by Ukrainian forces, because he quickly surrendered. He reported being lured to Russia for higher education, but then was conscripted.
Eswatini: recently the government began an investigation into Russian recruitment of citizens under false pretenses.
Ghana: at least 272 Ghanians have been lured to Russia, and 55 are dead. The Ghanian president is asking the EU to help rescue its remaining citizens.
India: "The CBI said it had detected "around 35 instances" of Indians being sent to Russia. At least two of the men who went to Russia expecting to work as "helpers" in the army have died while fighting at the front, according to their families. The Indian Embassy in Russia has confirmed one of those deaths."
Indonesia: "A former Indonesian marine, who reportedly lost his citizenship after joining the Russian army to fight in Ukraine, has posted a TikTok video appealing to his country for help returning home. His plea has sparked controversy across Indonesia."
Iraq: an Iraqi man was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in a trafficking ring that sent an unknown number of Iraqis to Russia for the war effort.
Jordan: "Jordan urged Russia to stop recruiting its citizens after two Jordanians were killed fighting with Russian forces, warning of illegal online recruitment."
Kenya: More than 1000 Kenyans have been trafficked by Russia, including a rather famous athlete, Evans Kibet. "He described being told, âYou either serve or get killed,â and recalled how Ukrainian troops fed and sheltered him after he surrendered. He also pleaded publicly not to be returned to Russia."
Malawi: an especially disturbing case, as the country reports many young women have been tricked into working at drone production facilities.
Nepal: This is the big one. Between 6000-10000 Nepali citizens have been recruited to fight in Russia, often under false pretenses. "Soldiers have reported paying traffickers in Russia thousands of dollars to facilitate their escape. Ishwor Lamichane, 39, who went to Russia in 2023, had visited a consultancy in Tinkune, Kathmandu, with friends and paid $4,000 to secure transit and a tourist visa. He was told he would be in a medical post, a low-risk military role." "The choice to go to Russia is rooted in âextreme povertyâ, Pangeni said. âRather than lingering around in a state of unemployment, people prefer to risk their lives. They seem convinced of the security of their family â as, even if they die, they believe their families will receive compensation.â"
Nigeria: At least 36 Nigerians have been trafficked to Russia for the war. 5 have been confirmed killed.
Palestine: multiple refugees from the Gaza war have been trafficked from refugee camps in Lebanon.
Somalia: "Muhammad and seven other POWs prisoners of war, including five Nepalis, a Cuban, and a Sierra-Leonian, say they came to Russia seeking an escape from poverty. They also say they were tricked into fighting for Russia on the front lines in Ukraine. All foreign POWs claimed Russia promised not to deploy them to the front lines in Ukraine and that they would receive regular pay. However, only one said he received his salary, albeit not in full."
South Africa: "President Cyril Ramaphosa said the South African men aged between 20 and 39 were lured into joining mercenary forces âunder the pretext of lucrative employment contractsâ and had issued distress calls after becoming trapped in Ukraine."
Sri Lanka: ""We have received 455 complaints, we feel the number could be much higher. They have been duped by certain nefarious agents, some of these people have been arrested. People who have left for Russia have been promised certain salaries and privileges including citizenship,â Balasuriya said. The agents who recruited Sri Lankans had told them that they will not be used for fighting but there are now daily complaints that they are being sent to the war front in Ukraine, the minister said."
Tajikistan: according to Ukraine, at least 931 Tajiki citizens have been identified as fighting for Russia, and 196 have been killed. It's unclear under what circumstances they were recruited.
Togo: the Togolese government has confirmed the presence of multiple nationals -- described as "students" -- in Ukrainian prison camps after they surrendered. "Togo's foreign ministry stated that many of its citizens were lured into the conflict under the guise of being "students" with scholarships offered by Russian authorities. The ministry advises its citizens "seeking education abroad" to exercise extreme caution and verify the authenticity of such offers to prevent unwitting involvement in armed conflicts."
Turkmenistan: "Russia recruited at least 122 citizens of Turkmenistan to participate in the war against Ukraine in the first six months of 2025. Foreigners serve as a "disposable resource" in assault units, where mortality is high."
Uganda: not only have dozens of Ugandan citizens been lured to Russia, the Ugandan government has officially washed their hands of the issue even as their citizen beg for help.
Uzbekistan: Ukraine has identified 1,100 Uzbeki citizens who were trafficked to Russia; 109 have been killed.
Yemen: hundreds of Houthi fighters have been recruited under false pretenses of high-paid military jobs, then sent to front lines.
Zimbabwe: "Mangwana also confirmed that the number of Zimbabweans killed in the conflict has risen to 18." They were told they would be working as firefighters.
Yup. Ukraine has a hotline, aptly titled "I Want To Live," which offers both Russians and foreign nationals who have been deceptively lured into the war instructions on how to surrender peacefully.
The "I Want To Live" project says it is getting up to 100 enquiries a day from invading troops.
