I've done a bit more research and testing on the subject of pink flashing (Thanks to everyone from my Discord who contributed!)
I came up with a "duct tape", temporary solution for Mansion & Garden players, in the form of an ASI mod, available with instructions under the cut.
Let me know how it goes! This won't fix crashes and won't work in every case, but people have seen improvements. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this at some point. I might make it a part of RPC eventually.
Download
SimFileShare / Dropbox
Usage and drawbacks:
All this mod does is ignore when the game tells materials to start flashing, which can result in them working fine as the game tends to misjudge the amount of available memory and make stuff pink flash when it's not really necessary.
This can result in pink flashing being gone and everything looking normal or stuff that would normally pink flash simply turning invisible.
If you see things start turning invisible in-game, type in the cheat "boolprop reparseshaders true" (without the quotes of course)
Installation Instructions:
If you use Sims2RPC, copy the "NoErrorVisualization.asi" file into your "(Mansion & Garden Install folder)/TSBin/mods" folder. (e.g "C:/Origin Games/The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection/Fun with Pets/SP9/TSBin/mods")
If you don't use Sims2RPC you will need a cracked Sims2EP9.exe, then copy the "NoErrorVisualization.asi" file into your M&G TSBin folder, and download an ASI Loader: (SFS/Dropbox). Copy this dsound.dll file in TSBin alongside the .asi file.
Life hack: if you suffer from pink flashing and/or lag and use lots of Criquette’s linden trees in your ‘hoods - extract the textures in SimPE and resize them to half their original size.
Those trunk textures really don’t need to be 1024px wide and even with half the resolution, I can’t see a difference in quality. On the other hand, my game performance has improved noticeably - even if I didn’t get pink flashing, it was laggier than it is now for sure.

Sims 2 Players 2009: Finally start to catch on to some of the causes of corruption, mainly too many Sims in the neighborhood, and turning Mrs. Crumplebottom into a vampire

Restoring a corrupted TS2 character file from a back-up
As I couldn't find anything on this elsewhere, I'm posting this as a reference. Not a tutorial (despite the tags), because solutions to character file corruption are likely specific to what's causing the corruption in the first place. In my case, this was a missing character file resource (Age Data). That said, I hope this may be of help to a future player dealing with sudden corruption.
Loooong, detailed post under the cut.
🚨 DISCLAIMER TIME 🚨
1. I'm no expert. I'm familiar with messing around with SimPE and game files, and I've played the game for 15+ years, but that's the extent of my know-how.
2. This worked for me, for my issue. I imagine corruption comes in many forms, so what I did may not work for another player's corrupted Sims. Make sure you have followed all these steps to give yourself the best chance of avoiding corruption.
3. Back up your game! My habit of doing this saved my Sim this time around. If you haven't in a while, take this as a sign to go do it. 🙂
4. To mirror what I did, you will require a back-up of your neighbourhood file (i.e. N004 or equivalent) with an uncorrupted copy of your Sims' character file. I explain how to check for character file corruption below.
I used my copy of The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection, Mootilda’s HoodChecker and SimPE for this. Any user wishing to replicate this process should be comfortable using the SimPE utility - i.e. have experience editing neighbourhood files, Sim files, making CC etc.
A. Identifying who's corrupted
I discovered the corruption while playing. When summoned to a lot, one of my sims, Leona, was invisible. I couldn’t find her to click on, but she was present - the BatBox and other objects/Sim actions had her as a valid target. When present on the lot with boolprop testingcheatsenabled true on, she threw out continuous Hit Break Point Primitive errors. With boolprop off, she crashed the game - presumably due to the looping errors. The error code my game gave me when crashing was Exception code: 0xC0000005 (-1073741819) ACCESS_VIOLATION.
There are two ways to identify corruption in your neighbourhood:
a). Run the HoodChecker utility - it will spot issues in a neighbourhood and attempt to remove them for you. However, in my case it did not spot the corrupted Sim/character file.
b). Check using SimPE. Open SimPE. Navigate to "Tools... Neighborhood... Neighborhood Browser". In the pop-up, select the neighbourhood in question. You can use this opportunity to create a back up under "Backup" in that same pop-up. After that, with the neighbourhood selected, click "Open". Allow SimPE a few moments to load all the resources (may take anywhere from seconds to a few minutes).
If you suspect a corrupted character file, you can check this via Sim Browser. This can be opened, after opening your neighbourhood, by navigating to "Tools... Neighborhood... Sim Browser". You'll be greeted by a pop up that looks like this:
Sim Browser will show all Sims that live or have lived in your neighbourhood. It can also be filtered to show a subset of Sims (i.e. Playables, Townies, NPCs). The "Uneditable" category generally refers to dead Sims and special NPCs (i.e. the Grim Reaper, the Therapist, Pollination Technician, etc).
I knew Leona was likely corrupted, and I knew she was a playable Sim. So, I could narrow it down to my playable Sims in Sim Browser. I could track her down by using the "Available" heading to filter by character file status. As you can see, by doing so Leona is near the top of the list, and shows a status of "no Character file".
A note on NPC Sims who have been made playable: you can see I have two Sims among my Playables who don't have character file data. This isn't strictly true however. My Sim Chase Andrews (top of the list) is a former landlord NPC who married into one of my playable families. As "safe to play" NPCs often have their own unique behaviours (i.e. maids being sparkly clean, burglars sneaking, Cow Mascots being horny pranksters), their character files can be large especially after they are made playable. The game addresses this by splitting their files. As such, you will see character files like "N004_User00124.1 - this indicates a NPC character file which has been split. They are harmless to your game and are not a sign of corruption.
By clicking to highlight Leona's entry in Sim Browser and hitting "Open" on that window, I could see her in Plugin View.
The red background of Leona's thumbnail indicated that she had no character data/was corrupted. I could click through the other tabs (Career, Relations, Interests etc) and they all seemed in order. I had to open Leona's own character file to discover what was wrong with her.
At this point, I opened a second session of SimPE. I used this to open an uncorrupted version of Leona's file alongside the corrupted version.
Here's a tangent - I noticed Leona was corrupted in-game on 9 January. I was able to review my versioned backups (made through SimPE) to see when the corruption took place. This was reasonably quick - I repeated the process above by opening the neighbourhood file in each backup folder (N004_Neighborhood.package in my case) then following the process above to open and check Sim Browser. Leona was not corrupted on 8 November last, but she was a month later by 9 December.
You can open a Sim's character file by viewing them in Plugin View in SimPE. Alternatively, if you know what their character file name is (i.e. Leona's is N004_User00393.package), you can open it directly in Windows Explorer from C:\Users\[user]\Documents\EA Games\The Sims™ 2 Ultimate Collection\Neighborhoods\N00X\Characters for the UC or the equivalent game folder in Documents for non-UC players.
B. Transplanting missing parts to the corrupted file
Here are the two SimPE windows side by side. On the left, Leona's corrupted file; on the right, an uncorrupted version of the same file from my 8 November backup.
Straight away it was evident that the corruption was being caused by a missing resource. The uncorrupted version had 83 resources; the corrupted version has 82. By reviewing the Resource Tree on the left hand side and comparing it to the uncorrupted version, I discovered that it was Age Data that was missing. I did a cursory click through the other resources on the corrupted file - they all appeared in order and matched the corresponding references in the uncorrupted file.
It seemed Age Data had been deleted, leaving the rest of Leona's file intact. This was promising. I have no idea how it happened, but I was fairly certain I could add the backup file's Age Data to the corrupted file to resolve the corruption.
To do this, I flipped over to the uncorrupted character file, I selected Age Data in the Resource Tree and right clicked on it in the Resource List, and clicked "Extract...".
In the resulting pop up Windows Explorer window, I saved the extracted Age Data resource somewhere safe (my Desktop lol) without renaming it or messing with the file extension. Then I closed the uncorrupted character file - we’re done with that for now.
Back to the corrupted character file. I right-clicked under the Resource List (doesn't matter what's selected) and clicked on "Add..". I navigated back to my desktop and selected the extracted Age Data file that I'd just saved.
The Age Data file now appears in the Resource Tree, and it should count 83 resources in the amended corrupted file - just like the uncorrupted one. In SimPE, you need to commit changes then save the file - miss either of those steps and the changes won't stick. After committing and saving, I could close the character file.
When I re-opened the neighbourhood in SimPE, and opened Sim Browser, Leona no longer presented as having no Character file - she appeared normal, like any other uncorrupted Sim.
Hood Checker also didn't report issues, other than a few broken memories which predate the corrupted character file issue. The no Character file warnings I get are for the multiple PT and Ideal PlantSim mods I have. That's good news, in the sense of me not effing up other files in the process of fixing Leona's.
There's only one thing for it - time to boot up my game and see what's waiting for me in N004 (Springvale).
My neighbourhood loaded without issue, and I could see Leona's family description - her family are pretty wealthy. I also forgot this was a household with baby triplets - oh dear. 🙃 I progress to load the Walton-Kerrs with trepidation...
It loaded! I'd forgotten to stick on boolProp (to prevent an insta-crash) but no issues. I did enter boolProp (with the proper spelling) and did a force error on everyone on the lot, but all was fine. The BatBox didn’t pick up on issues either, although I cleared out memories and gossip to be sure. And most importantly...
🎉 SHE LIVES!!! 🎊
Leona is back, no longer invisible and throwing errors. As far as I can tell, there’s no issues with her at all after giving her back her missing Age Data. She’s back in time to age up and make her own way in the world. Good for Leona! She can have a massive birthday bash next time I play her lot.
a). It’s lucky that I hadn’t played Leona’s lot in some time, hence her back-up was for the most part identical to the current version of her file in my neighbourhood. However, even if her backup had been missing some gameplay, that method of extracting and adding/replacing resources may be viable if the back-up differs a little from the current version. You might have to edit relationships/memories to ensure continuity - not just in the corrupted file, but for their family/friends/acquaintances too. Hood Checker would be a good help in spotting what you’d need to fix. That said, you’d need to know exactly what you’re doing in SimPE before committing to that.
b). I believe I would have been fine just copying the back-up character file in to replace the current corrupted character file in N004/Characters. That’d be much more straightforward than extracting resources. However, since I was reasonably confident the corruption was limited to the missing Age Data resource, I decided to go this route in the end.
c). Because of my circumstances, I believed I had a shot of restoring Leona’s original character file. However, not all would be lost if it was unsalvageable. I could follow the tutorials to extract Leona, safely remove all traces of her (risky in an old, big ‘hood like mine), then recreate her in CAS and edit her in SimPE to give her the right personality, skills, genetics, memories, relationships and family ties/tree. I would recommend this for anyone who doesn’t have a back-up for a corrupted Sim. Introduce a body invader/doppelganger storyline to your neighbourhood à la Strangetown Bella, keep things interesting!
If anyone else wants to chip in with views or ideas, please do - it’s been an interesting issue to dig into. I’m hoping now for clear sailing, since I’ve spent hours this month fixing the game, rather than actually playing it. However, I’ll update this post as I work out the issues.
Thanks again to @sushigal007 and @theneighborhoodchronicles-blog, who helped in bouncing around ideas on this.
Came across a busted character file in my main neighbourhood today - no idea how or when it happened, but a perfectly playable Sim of mine has become corrupted for reasons yet unknown.
The good news is, I have a backup where her character file is intact, and I'm almost certain I haven't played her lot since then, so there'd be no gameplay loss... provided I can find a way to restore her character file.
My question being, can anyone point me in the direction of any tutorials or methods for restoring or otherwise dealing with corrupted character files? Ideally I'd like to not have to delete this Sim outright. Best case scenario would be restoring the file with its earlier backup or manually fixing whatever's gone wrong with her file.
I have already:
run HoodChecker on the neighbourhood and removed any instances of corruption there.
opened the character file in SimPE and had a look. From a cursory glance, I can't see what's broken, but it's still flagged as "no character data".
checked the error logs for this Sim. I have the text of that available, and googled to see if it's come up before - not unusual by the sounds of things, but didn't see anything for restoring a corrupted character.
installed any and all anti-corruption mods - I've had those in since the beginning of this 'hood, so no issues there.
Any help appreciated! I'll stick some additional details under the cut, and update if I get anywhere with it in the meantime.
This is what I see in SimPE:
Leona's a teen Sim, who's just starting out in life. My neighbourhood is in its fifth generation (ushering in the sixth at present), so she's got quite the family history already. It'd be a shame if I had to delete her outright! (The other no Character data Sim is a landlord NPC who married into a playable family, so assume that file relates to his landlord past and isn't an issue).
To-do
I've checked the SimPE neighbourhood backups, and her character file was not corrupted in March 2021. It was corrupted by December 2021. I haven't been able to investigate the back-ups inbetween yet, but I plan to. I don't think I've changed anything which would have caused this, but I plan to figure out a rough timeframe for when she was borked.
I haven't checked the borked character file's genetics - could be something wrong there, as I have messed around with defaults/geneticised skins in the past. That said, I don't think I've outright removed any in the past year. In my experience, removing geneticised/townified genetics doesn't normally shred character files though, it just causes a buttload of work to replace the borked genetics in SimPE. If it did cause outright character file corruption, I'd have way more than just one shredded character file.
Here's an excerpt from her latest error log:
In game, when summoned to a lot, Leona is invisible. I couldn't find her to click on, but she was certainly present - the BatBox and other objects/Sim actions had her as a valid target. When present on the lot, she threw out continuous Hit Break Point Primitive errors. With BoolProp off, she crashed the game altogether - presumably due to the looping errors.
Excerpt above, but the full version of exception error log is here, if anyone would like to take a look. If you can shed any light on what might be wrong with her file, please let me know.
Hey all, I'm back with tentative good news. After putting up this post, with some helpful discussion from@theneighborhoodchronicles-blog and @sushigal007, I played around with my neighbourhood files and edited the corrupted character file. After doing so, my neighbourhood loaded, my Sims's lot loaded AND she seemed to be just fine. HoodChecker and SimPE are reporting a clean bill of health on her character file.
I am cautiously calling this a success, although I will be watching like a hawk for consequences. I have extensive backups so if things do head south after this, I'll be able to cushion the blow.
Thanks again everyone for the input on this post! I'll stick up a second post to run through my process, as I don't want to stick a second cut under this.

Signal boost reblog - googling this hasn't gotten me anywhere, although I do have options outside of my replacement file idea (creating a "body double"). I'll have time to do some experimenting this weekend, as well as time to look into the differences between the corrupted file and the uncorrupted old back-up file.

Tl,dr: Photobucket sucks, have old Sims 2 pics of mine
1) Fuck photobucket and their banner of doom. You do not, in fact, have to go straight to paying for storage or deleting your account. You can back up your photos after getting that banner by returning to photobucket.com after logging in and selecting album/images - they download as .zip files. Their UI is a bitch but it's doable. I now have 2000+ images sitting in my downloads folder. ._.
2) Those images cover my Simming exploits from about 2008 to 2015 - in internet terms, from the end of the TS2 website era to peak TS2 Simblr (for me... I'd say there's a bit of a renaissance happening again now with all the cool content and mods being shared!). Some highlights shared, my aesthetic really changed over time! I also found a photo of my childhood dog that I didn't have backed up elsewhere so silver linings. :')
3) Scrubbing my PB account will probably break a few image links across my Sims accounts. NBD, but in particular some downloads might not have images. If there's an issue, hit up my ask inbox or whatevs. This will affect: my tumblr, my old LJ account, my posts on the Unofficial BBS, my old WordPress. Think that's it? I can't bring myself to read back over my old blogs but I mostly posted gameplay stuff/bad creative writing so should be good.
Hello Can I ask? I want to change skin sims mod but sims Has been moved into the family. Can i change it?
Hi :) Do you mean that you've put a geneticized skin into your game, a sim has it, and now you want to remove it? Information about this can be found on my guide to gen/town skinsets, and yes: it is possible to change it. I'm sure there was a detailed tutorial for how to do this somewhere but I can't seem to find it? What you basically have to do is quickly explained in the 3rd post here by AnoeskaB, it can be a lengthy process if you need to change the skins of many sims. I thought it was covered in Rikkulidea's amazing (ultimate) genetics tutorial, and maybe it is, but it's lengthy and I didn't bother looking too closely, you'd have to read it yourself anyway. :)
Sims 2 and Standby Memory - What actually fixed pink flashing for me
We all know the dreaded pink flashing issue in TS2, so I don’t need to go on about it. Sometimes, it seems that even with all the fixes in place, it still happens, to some people more than others. General instability like random crashes are a related issue.
Well, this is what actually fixed it for me: setting my PC to automatically empty its Standby memory. You can find out how to do it HERE; it’s really not difficult!
Why is this important? Basically, Windows should be doing this on its own, but it isn’t, so a portion of your memory is kept unused indefinitely on “standby” while your game runs out of resources - result? Pink flashing/crashing.
This fix is not often mentioned in guides, and I resisted doing it for a long time, until the flashing and crashing pushed me to take the plunge. Since then, my game has been remarkably stable - it almost never crashes and I never get pink flashing from regular gameplay, even though I play well-decorated ‘hoods and lots and have quite a lot of CC, some of it high-poly.
❗️ Now, I don’t guarantee that this will fix everyone’s problems for good, and it’s not an invitation to throw all caution to the wind and overload your game with tons of high-poly stuff! It probably also depends on your computer, graphics card and amount/type of CC as well among other things, but if you are plagued by pink flashing and general instability, I recommend giving it a go.
I should mention this is a Windows 10 fix (and possibly Windows 11, idk) and I an Nvidia graphics card. YMMV.
I agree - this completely solved my random crashes on Windows 10 with an Nvidia graphics card, and on the rare occasions that I do get pink flashing, it’s because I have forgotten to make sure that this fix is enabled while I’m playing (my antivirus likes to disable it when I load the game).

Hey, I'm back lurking on Tumblr of late. Probably not going to go pack to posting with any frequency because I play too infrequently, life is life and Tumblr isn't something I can be consistent at.
But lurk I shall, and I've got precious little TS2 content on my dash these days! I know y'all are still out there playing, and there's been new players who've gotten into Tumblr since I was inactive.
I've done a little following this morning from what Tumblr itself suggested to me, but if you post primarily TS2 content (not big on seeing much TS3/TS4 stuff tbh) hit me up and I'll check out your blog.
Brandi is now showing, and took some time out from her cycle of eating/sleeping/lamenting to wash Beau and greet far-from-home Leod McGreggor. I don’t even know if I’ll make it over to Riverblossom Hills at my current pace, but dude might find himself plenty occupied in the meantime...
