Mourning the loss of innocent, sincere pop culture on a video of people lining up for a midnight release of Titanic on VHS is fair enough but a lot of people were cynical about that at the time. Titanic was not only extremely popular, it was extremely popular with women, so there were tons of jabs about the women who went to see it day after day. This is of course forgotten over time, just like how it is for any mass phenomenon, bc nobody's nostalgic for not going to something.
If you enacted a similar event today, with the social media of today, would the reaction would be joy at the return to innocence or would it be a dash of jokes about how stupid it is that those dumb winemoms are so into some stupid blockbuster movie? If that video of people waiting in line was in the present tense, would you still find it charmingly innocent or unbearably cringe? Well, the former is just the latter given a decade or two of space
Thing is the 90s were famously decried as the decade of irony! Grunge, MTV, self-referential pop culture about pop culture: it was the era of disaffected Gen X cynicism. If you go back I'm sure you'll find plenty of essays demanding a return to sincerity, exactly like we have now (I mean just looking up the phrase "decade of irony" will get you some). But enough time has passed for the main source of nostalgia for the decade to be the kids who engaged with Nickelodeon or teens/adults who were into "cringe" media and so now it gets to be a time of simple, naive sincerity.
I read a great analysis of the titanic movie years ago, or maybe a video essay? About how titanic was an incredibly sincere movie that had to battle through the irony of the nineties to get people to emotionally invest in the romance and tragedy of it.
The analysis was about how one of the ways it pre-empted the dismissal of the sincerity of the plot, was by having the framing device of the treasure hunters. Because as an audience you're introduced to it as a foregone conclusion (beyond knowing the history itself of course), but also that you see the crew of the ship kind of scoffing at and dismissing the emotion of it. So it gives the audience a signal of like... I know this is stupid and soppy, but come with us on this. I acknowledge this is to be scoffed at, here is a character scoffing at it, but let's see what happens.
I just found that fascinating, to frame it like that to combat the culture of the time, and then to see the crew be swept along be the emotions of it in much the same way as most of the audience was.
why haven’t I seen anyone posting about that giant fucking baby penguin in Melbourne that’s bigger than some of the adults already
his name is Pesto <3
this bastard weighs 46 lbs at 9 months old. he’s 22 lbs heavier than his PARENTS
OMG I SAW THIS LAD IN PERSON AND LOST EVERY OUNCE OF SHIT I’VE EVER POSSESSED
Look at him!
Also he was separated with one of his parents when I saw him but obviously wanted to Be Where The People Penguins Are so they’d set him up with a little rock stool so he could gaze upon his brethren:
Which enabled me to capture the single funniest video I’ve ever taken of anything in my life:
All hail Pesto! The king of chonk!
He's adventurous, cheeky, sings to the caretakers who clean his enclosure and has been seen CANOODLING with a penguin named Pudding.
And fucking handsome too—look at him striking a pose with his new look!

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Y'all omg, look at him in his awkward teen phase
Show up at work like hi boss sorry I'm late my I was helping my mother track down one specific 90s dungeon crawler for the purposes of obtaining a muffin recipe the developer hid in the files
Anyway shoutout to Stonekeep (1995)
I'M MAKING THE MUFFINS
Burnt my hand picking it up to show. Gonna wait to taste.
Taste review: Make the video game muffins oh my GOD.
These are DELICIOUS! I substituted chocolate chips for pecans because its what i had on hand.
It tastes like a pumpkin gingerbread cake! Great treat for fall and winter!
Definitely make these!
Text from recipe
Tim Cain's Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins -- They're the shadow king's favorite!
1 and 2/3 cup flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp baking powder
2 eggs
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup sugar
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup pumpkin (half of a 16 oz can)
1/2 cup (one stick) butter, melted
preheat oven to 350. grease muffin tins (one dozen regular size) or use baking cups. mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Break eggs into another bowl. add pumpkin and butter and whisk until blended. stir in chocolate chips. pour over dry ingredients and stir until just blended. do NOT overstir! scoop batter into tins and bake 20-25 minutes. after cooling, keep muffins wrapped in plastic to avoid drying.
I'm sure people have pointed it out already, but

31 hours deep into the insomniac’s gambit and i posted on the wrong blog again
Rocky on the trip back to Erid registering that Grace has defaulted to using he/him for him for sexism reasons and that they don't actually have to go by he/him. xe does some research on the human computer and spends several weeks cycling through different pronoun sets. starts switching so frequently Grace becomes convinced sie has started being difficult on purpose. after a while Grace is like omg will you just pick one and stick with it. Rocky is like okay i have decided. rock/rocks. rockself. Grace like well i can't argue with that.
#see the hill that I will die on is that if Andy weir was cooler rockey would use either they them or xe xir#you’re telling me cool middle school teacher Ryland grace is unfamiliar with the concept of fun new genders#absolutely not. his students have taught him about singular they them and neopronouns
Grace trying to explain to Rocky that they can be whatever they want to be and presenting a whole list of different pronoun options and Rocky (who has no concept of gender) being like 'why would I care about any of this'
Rocky: which pronouns does Grace use question?
Grace: he/him
Rocky: okay. Rocky will use he/him too
Grace: okay but I feel like defaulting to he/him promotes a patriarchal kind of mindset and we should be more thoughtful about it
Rocky: okay so use the other standard pronouns
Grace: she/her?
Rocky: yeah
Grace: okay but that feels weird too
Rocky: why weird question
Grace:
Grace, later, lying awake: I never considered that Rocky might wanna be a she... Am I a bad person?
Rocky: Grace mix it up suggestion
Grace: I guess I could
Rocky: Rocky he/she/they/it
Grace: I don't know if you can use it
Rocky: why not question
Grace: it's just considered dehumanising?
Rocky:
Rocky, being a little shit: I choose it/its
Rocky: this conversation boring, let's go back to Grace tones
Grace: okay so you won't pick a pronoun but I have to pick a tonal inflection?
Rocky: my thing more important statement
Grace: okay fine can't you just your tones for me?
Rocky: but Grace not qualified engineer
Grace: well is there a schoolteacher tone?
Rocky: uhh no
Rocky: schoolteacher not
Rocky: schoolteacher not prestige profession statement
Grace:
Grace: WOW.
Grace: is there not like a default tone to use when you don't know all this stuff about a person?
Rocky: yes but very rude to use for close friend statement
Grace: wait hold up 🤔 you think of me as a close friend?
Rocky: yes maybe Grace shut up now
Grace several years into their voyage, finally getting good enough at understanding Eridian to clock when Rocky has switched back to using the Neutral Tone for him, thereby implying that they are no longer friends: HEY??
Grace, in the middle of a big argument: did you just. dead person inflection me?
Rocky: uh-huh
Grace: does that mean what I think it means
Rocky: it means what it means statement
Grace: come ON
i hear a good lyric and start mentally holding up blorbos like im in the home depot paint aisle comparing swatches
Supermassive Black Hole lends itself to soundtracking one thing and one thing alone and that is a strip club. Supermassive Black Hole is the most perfect strip club rock song I've ever heard. I've heard rock songs *about* strip clubs that feel less suited to a strip club than Supermassive Black Hole. I have heard songs where sex is explicitly described in the lyrics that feel less sexy than Supermassive Black Hole. Supermassive Black Hole is a song so disgustingly, flagrantly, enticingly slutty that I sometimes feel legitimately shocked that it was made by a band that most people make fun of for sounding like if Radiohead sold out after their first album. It is a crowning achievement in stripper music that may never be topped in our lifetime. It is best known for soundtracking the scene in the first Twilight movie where they play baseball.

it’s so magical and beautiful that there are sprawling interconnected cave systems carved deep into the earth by various geological forces and you don’t have to go in them. there are miles and miles of stone passageways in total darkness that require you to exhale all the air out of your lungs to squeeze through parts of them and you don’t have to be there. some of these squeezes are underwater and require cave divers to take off their oxygen tanks and push them through ahead of them and me i am above ground looking at the sky as we speak. there are untold subterranean wonders no human has ever seen and i will not be the one to discover them #grateful #blessed
so true there could be any number of undiscovered species down there all of which are none of my business and never will be. peace and love on (the surface of) planet earth 💕
