Nara is just Nara because even the Japanese don’t know (for sure) where the name comes from. It’s been written using like twenty different kanji over the years; the official one is a very vague set of characters that could potentially be translated, among other things, as “good crow,” but it’s entirely possible that these aren’t the original kanji associated with the name.

Two most common interpretations is that it would either be “flat place” or “oak trees found here.”
