We make fun of generic The Blank of Blank and Blank titles in fantasy, but honestly they're genius. First of all, that naming convention is way older than booktok and the new pulp fiction we pin on it. It belongs in the genre by tradition as much as elves and magic. Second it's a great use of iambic trimeter to put weight on those three words, which just sounds nice too.

And most importantly, it gives everyone who reads the title three keywords that describe the story. Fantasy is so diverse that picking three evocative words per work is possible the best way to describe it. Court, Thorn, Roses; Song, Ice, Fire; Ballad, Songbirds, Snakes, whatever. It's definitely overused at the moment, but not cause people are uncreative. It works

Hot take. Every way of categorizing things is arbitrary but still may or may not be useful. For example, you *could* define a category so that anything fits in it, but then it no longer conveys anything meaningful to say something belongs to that category. That's just a list of things. We gotta start caring more about how useful the criteria of a category are than how real those criteria are or how fair the criteria feel

YES. I went hiking with a birder a few days ago and that was already really cool, but one of the other people coming along with us was an entomologist who brought his net and also his little Insect Holding Cell cups, and the onslaught of information about birds and insects and arachnids (and plants!) stopped for NO ONE.
