I think in progressive spaces, the term "white" is widely used to mean "culturally middle class". And while I would prefer people just say "culturally middle class", because it's more accurate, "white" is a term that gets used widely for this idea (especially in America—I wonder why that could be...). Anyway, you will understand a lot of social justice discourse better if you understand that this is actually what people mean when they talk about "white feminism", "white leftism", and so on a good chunk of the time.

So there's this essay that George Orwell wrote in the 1930s about Rudyard Kipling and how, much thpugh Orwell found Kipling's politics distasteful, they can't really be called "fascist" in that Kipling was naive enough to honestly believe in queen and country and the civilizing mission of the British Empire, whereas fascists, living imas they were in the shadow if the First World War, understood that it was all a bunch of bullshit and so believed in nothing more than power for its own sake and felt no need to gussy-up their own imperialist efforts with a genteel framing.

Anyways, I feel like that's the difference between the Romulans and the Cardassians.
