“Although I’ve told you repeatedly. And despite being raised Muggle. You don’t bother taking anything out before throwing it in the machine.”

“Yes.”

“Receipts, coins, notes…”

“Yes.”

“Rings?”

Harry got down on one knee.

Draco swallowed. “Harry?”

“Will you…”

He joined him on the floor with a groan, crying. “Fuck you. Yes.”

jegulus microfic, or, James is a cute, simping idiot for 784 words

The first time he saw him, James had no idea who he was. Regulus was sitting alone, back straight and frown in place, hands clasped under his chin as he scowled at the notes in front of him.

He looked very pretty.

James remembers stopping dead in his tracks, because really, Regulus’ beauty made him useless from the first moment they met. He had a perfect view of his side profile, and the light from the window on Regulus’ other side poured over him, making him look like an angel.

James glanced at what he was reading. There was a thick blue textbook beside his notes and laptop. Clinical histopathology.

Well, damn. James didn’t know what the fuck that was.

He wasn’t an idiot; he knew it had something to do with medicine. What, though, he had no idea.

James was new at the university, and he didn’t have many friends he could ask about the handsome doctor guy. The only close friend he had was Sirius, and that was because they’d sat together on the first day in a class that was very much not called clinical… all of that.

Which meant James had to talk to him.

Naturally, instead of going over to Regulus and asking his name like a normal person, he grabbed his phone and quickly looked up ‘difficult topics in clinical histopathology’.

“Ugh,” he said, making a show of throwing himself into the chair across from the guy. “Clinical histopathology? Megaloblastic anemia is the worst.”

Regulus looked up, confused, and blinked a few times as if to bring him into focus.

After a few moments of silence, he raised an eyebrow. “Are you in Mrs. Richards’ class?”

“Uh–” To be fair, what was James expecting? “Er– no. I took one of her classes… last term?”

“Oh,” Regulus nodded. “Well, I’m still stuck with Neuro. Hematology’s the next chapter, though.”

Now that James knew. Neuro, easy. “Ah, you’ve got to love the brain. All those cute synapses and— neurons, am I right?”

Regulus looked at him as if James’ own synapses were disconnected. He tilted his head. “Do you still have class, or are you already on clinical rotations?”

“Uhm. Still taking classes.” James swallowed. That was getting out of hand.

“What’s your next exam?”

James blinked. Think, James. Fucking think. What are doctor subjects?

“Pediatrics?” He said weakly, and it sounded more like a question.

Regulus hummed, leaning back in his chair with a pleased smile. James took a silent breath of relief.

“Do you want to be a pediatrician, James?”

“I– Well, I do like kids.” James smiled. “And I must say, I think I’d rock a white coat— Wait.”

Regulus simply stared at him. A hint of a smile on his lips.

James felt his eyes widen. “I didn’t tell you my name.”

“No, you didn’t, James Potter.”

“Well,” James said. “This is awkward.”

“Me knowing your name isn’t awkward.” Regulus started gathering his notes, and James could only watch him, mortified. “What’s awkward is that I know you’re starting a master’s in English Lit.”

James opened and closed his mouth. He wanted to kill himself. Kiss the pretty stranger, and then kill himself. “How–”

“I’m Regulus. Regulus Black. Sirius’ younger brother,” Regulus gracefully explained. “We’ve met before.”

“What? Impossible. I would remember you.”

“Not if you were too hammered to string a sentence together and threw your glasses instead of the ball into the beer pong cups.”

“Oh.”

“Yep.”

“Sirius’ birthday, last Friday.”

“Exactly.”

“Great. Fantastic.” James nodded a few times, scratching the back of his neck. “May I say ‘this is awkward’ now?”

“You may.”

“This is awkward.”

Regulus burst out laughing. James still wanted to kill himself, but he felt the edges of his mouth lift at the ridiculous situation.

“Why?” Regulus asked simply, shaking his head and still smiling.

“I wanted to impress you,” James admitted.

“But how could that have turned out well for you?”

“I don’t know.” James shrugged, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t think I’d make it this far. You’re… very pretty.”

Regulus bit his lip, looking down. James wanted to pump his fist in the air when he saw the man’s cheeks turn red.

Silence fell for a few seconds.

“If it helps,” Regulus said eventually. “I’m interested in literature too, not just clinical histopathology. In fact, I’d be very happy to take a break and forget about pathology for a bit.”

“Oh,” James answered. “I know about literature.”

“You do.”

Another beat of silence. Regulus sighed. “Ask me out for coffee, James.”

“Yep. Yes. Got it. Would you like to take a break from clinical histopathology and grab a coffee with me?”

“I’d love to.”
