IM SO UPSET
Today I learned about a comic called Rigsby WI, and it was good enough that I read the whole 200-odd page archive in a single sitting. Itās a period piece webcomic about the far of distant past of ~2002~, and a group of teenagers in a public high school in rural Wisconsin. I guess you could call it a slice of life, but itās the Midwestern slice of life where everyone is depressed and smokes a lot of weed and everyoneās parents are absent at best or abusive at worst.Ā
Just real assholes
Itās only about 200 pages so far, so if this is the kind of thing youāre into it might be worth hopping into. I dug it quite a bit.
My favorite bit from āChapter Twenty-Five: Seven Nation Armyā (beyond me finally realizing how the chapter titles are song references, wow I am a fake music fan jk š) was Quincyās immediate defense to firing their gun during the Carfax House heist.
Seward: Quincy! Are you trying to get us arrested?
Quincy, American cowboy who reads the classics: What? You want to let me get myself chewed to death by rats? Itās like yāall aināt even read 1984!
Me: *immediate flashbacks to That Sceneā¢ļø* Quincy you are so fricken right
And then Arthur unleashes his precious horde of terriers upon them proudly
i stopped giving a shit about "legit" purchases of digital products after i spent $80 on the entire Dark Horse collection of Trigun/Trigun Maximum ebook mangas, learning that I only got access to reading them through a proprietary website ereader function, couldn't download them, and couldn't get a refund, and then literally only a year later, getting an e-mail stating that Dark Horse was shutting down that part of their company and I wouldn't even be able to read them anymore. Fuck that
Pirate shit. Don't feel bad for it. It's not "your fault" that artists, independent or otherwise, can't make a living. You downloading an album or ebook for free isn't the cause of the problem. The cause is capitalism, plain and simple, and pirating is a lucky loophole that companies are still trying to stomp out.
Find the artist and send them $5 later.

next time youāre at the thrift store and find a nice solid thick pile area rug for a shockingly good price and youāve been looking for an area rug for the office forever and the color goes really nicely with the office color scheme and you think this is it, this is what iāve been waiting for, stop, and ask yourself: did i take the bus here?
next time youāre on the bus and see someone with an area rug and a look of deep disappointment in themself mind your own business
OP: "I've seen lion dancing and dragon dancing before, but this is the first time I've seen realistic lobsters fighting clams."
my favorite AITA ruling comments
"Neighborhood Watch"
as a birdwatcher, i registered a certain familiarity with how the entire neighborhood converged with their horns and whistles to drive away the threat. this is definitely a rough piece, but i had to get it out of me.
This is now available in my shop in a limited quantity!
Spoilers for Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
The way this book handles the themes of love, possession, control, and autonomy is so interesting. It starts with Maria being a possession of her husband and longing desperately to be free and have her own autonomy and be able to do what she wants so when she kills her husband weāre happy for her. The book sets us up to root for Maria as she becomes Sabine and starts a new life. We then see her become darker and darker until she finds Lottie and it switches perspectives, with Lottie explaining how Sabine freed her and gave her a new life but then proceeded to control every aspect of her, not allowing her to make friends or leave her victims alive. Charlotte became Sabines pet and property just like her husband kept her and at this point weāre rooting for charlotte and Sabine has become the villain to be defeated, the one who is withholding autonomy. Charlotte is more gentle and empathetic so weāre lead to believe that unlike Sabine we can trust her, sheās a protagonist we can root for her. But then Alice is turned and Sabine is killed and Lottie makes the decision to kill Alice rather than let her decide if she wants to live as a vampire or not. She is taking that choice away from her just like Sabine took so many choices away from Lottie. So itās not surprising when Alice kills her because throughout the book the story has told us what comes of those who try to control and possess others.
jumping out of the bushes
āand the thing is, even though she was Sabineās victim without a doubt, Lottie eventually became monstrous herself, not just as a vampire, but in the same way Sabine was, by causing pain to the girls she was attracted to or slept with, both when she killed Penny, who very obviously didnāt want to die, and justified it to herself by saying sheād rather not have the girl she loves live like that regardless of said girlās wishes, but also when she planned to kill Alice, who also very obviously didnāt want to die, after using her to get rid of Sabine.
In both cases, she made (or tried to make) the choice for them, taking over their lives (in this case their deaths) in the same way Sabine did her, with the only difference being that Lottie lies to herself and to them by saying that itās for the better and actually for them, when Sabine was mostly honest about her motivations.
Okay, but more bobitms thoughts! Cw: extremely vague bobitms spoilers, but spoilers there are.
I feel like, for as many people who react poorly to Alice's chapters and the repetition of her Catty memories, I end up finding a new thing about them that I love. Though, if i'm honest, I feel like Alice's chapters are perhaps the most challenging because they're so unsparing when it comes to her flaws and the fact that those flaws are incredibly relatable.
Alice is a young woman stuck at the cusp of her life, and has delayed that step beyond for far too long. Though what I think the Catty segments show even moreso is that Alice has always been on the cusp. She constrains herself to manage the feelings of others, trying to keep peace in a household that will never be peaceful (insofar as there is something of a feminist critique to be mined that speaks to an injustice, the very sort Catty is flipping out about), and has to silence her own wants and truth. However, what all this shows you, through each of these memories, is that the timid adult doesnt spawn ex nihilo. Each one of those moments swaddled her in layer after layer, and she's drowning within them, barely able to tread temporal water without being dislodged from her present.
Consequently, it strikes me that much of Alice's story (at least its beginning) is the presentation of a terrifying truth: if you don't make choices in your life someone will make them for you. In delaying her life, the development of herself, she becomes easy prey for Lottie. The perfect prey in fact, if we believe Lottie's reason for taking intrigue in Alice. Alice may have consented to sex, but she was very much hunted in a manner not that different from how Lottie was hunted by Sabine. Prey may choose to run, but the predator is guiding them toward the ambush.
And this is where Alice is so hard for so many to read about. They want to focus on cool vampire powers and hunts; the idea that, like Alice, they'd still be uncool, anxious, and timid despite all their newfound power is agonizing. To be told that you are only going to be more of yourself is awful when you lack a clear image of who you even are! Then there's the elements of shame at play that so many lesbians tend to have these days; while we have so much more language than our elders did (like Sabine and Lottie), there's a lot of invisible structures in play in our lives that leave us inept at even talking to girls. Made all the worse when our environment is so lacking in other queers, mentor or otherwise, who might show us how we can be. Yet, so many of us turn inward (in part due the lack of a social group usually) and self-flagellate via recognizing how our elders had it so much worse but that they can do all this stuff you're failing at, ignoring the fact that some of our elders had more mentorship and physical community than many of us possess. A strange lack which has meant a lot of us never received a low stakes space to be taught how we might exist in our world.
In this way, Alice embodies so many of the implicit struggles of the modern young lesbian. She might have no been fast tracked toward marriage, but the gravity-like presumption of naturalism that Patriarchy possesses is still in play, weakening our ability to exist. All of which is a hard pill to swallow, but a fundamentally necessary one. Being able to name your identity isnt enough. A single label will not save your life. Only through being able to live your life, make choices for yourself, and surround yourself with a supportive community will save you. To do otherwise is to be left at the mercy of any passing monster.
There's more I could say, but i'll stop for now.
