sam and dean’s relationship is so codependent its outright romantic. they grew up with just each other; no boundaries, nothing but one another because of their isolation due to their negligent father. it turned into this intense, obsessive bond. they don’t just love each other, theyre emotionally fused. they need each other.

so, yeah; it’s not just sibling closeness. the show obviously leans into incestuous undertones. their jealousy and their “you’re all i’ve got” coded lines. people love to acknowledge their tragic bond and say they’re doomed siblings but refuse to recognise the “problematic” undertones of their relationship 😭 if you can admit they can’t live without each other, then you also can’t pretend all they have is simply brotherly. that’s that

Just thinking about the fact that Sam's way of getting to Dean is physical distance. Sam can tolerate being away from Dean, he's used to it, but Dean can't handle being away from Sam. But Dean's way of getting to Sam is more effective: replacing him. Until he comes back, or until he learns his lesson and submits to his designated role of obedient baby brother. Because what Sam can't tolerate is Dean having a new brother. It renders the act of leaving ineffective. He knows then that someone's taken his place temporarily, and that his brother isn't pining and suffering over him alone. So really, leaving is just a punishment for Dean rather than a genuine desire to escape their unhealthy dynamic.

imagine supernatural having an entire episode with the premise of a monster who emulates a victim's deepest/ideal desire/love, and when it preys on dean, it emulates his little brother. imagine, too, that said monster — a siren — tells dean that what he wanted/needed "wasn't some bitch in a g-string"; dean wanted/needed his brother. now you have the fourth season's fourteenth episode, sex and violence.

During their younger years, I know Dean will have an intense battle within himself whenever he has to say no to Sam. I mean, look at him! How could he say no to that sweet face?
