Why do we even need a legal gender? Like why does the government need that information? If there is supposed to be no discrimination based on gender then why do they even need to know?

The same reason we want to know things like race and age and disability status.

“Person stabs person” is meaningless.

“Man stabs child” helps us understand the situation by being specific.

Similarly: Did a person shoot ten people over the course of a year, or did a white cop shoot at ten black women? Did a person blow up an abortion clinic, or was it an Evangelical Christian male?

“Person gains job as professor/governor/etc” is similarly meaningless, but “Native American woman is first to hold governor’s office” denotes progress in certain demographics.

As a society we need to track things like sex - how many women and children sought assistance from domestic violence resource programs? Did that number increase or decrease? Why? - and age - How many children were born in this county last year? How many received Early Intervention services this year? - and all kinds of variables. This determines where money goes, where jobs are, what positions might need to be added to our communities, and so much more.

But you’re right, there’s supposed to be no discrimination based on sex. It will be a wonderful day when that happens, but until then we need to continue to track what’s happening to make that our final result.

I get how you could think this, but that’s not what that means.

Gender-fluid people often either only feel comfortable in certain clothes when they feel theyre a certain gender, or they want to physically portray their gender change to other people, much like a trans man would dress masculine so other people will view him more as such.

It’s not “clothes change my gender” but “gender changes my clothes”.

now, why does your mind immediately go to “a womans worth is her genitals” when you hear “women have female genitalia”? do you inherently see female genitalia as something that is exploited and treated as a commodity, something that can be bought, sold and profited off of? why can’t women just have female genitalia, without that having any further implication beyond our biological sex?

simply stating a fact based on material reality is not reducing anyone to anything. would me saying that humans have brains be reducing them to their brains? or, would me saying dogs have fur be reducing them to their fur? no, it wouldn’t be. i’d just be naming things that define certain biological groups.

I typed out a response to a "Are you going to do genital inspections at the entrance to the women's bathroom?" post but OP turned of reblogs before I could post it so here it is I guess:

It [the idea that women's spaces are pointless because female exclusivity is unenforceable] is such a telling argument because all that's really being asked for when we demand single sex spaces is for men to VOLUNTARILY self-select out. For males to understand that, though they may not fit in well with other males, female spaces are still not theirs.

The suggestion from feminists is never genital inspections at the bathroom entrance, but that males voluntarily refrain from entering and that females have the right to expel violators when we can identify them. Some males do pass as females, and our request is that they respect our space regardless.

Males truly cannot conceive of the idea of simply respecting the space and boundaries of women. It literally doesn't cross their minds, so their minds immediately jump to whether or not women can forcibly stop them. The belief is that if a woman cannot forcibly prevent it, you may take anything you like from her with impunity.

"You can't force us not to enter!" They shout. Of course we cant! Forgive us for believing in your humanity and thinking that you might simply respect us. We thought too highly of you.
