OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
CALLOUT POST FOR FUCKING EURIPIDES
did classical athens do something problematic
I so desperately wish I could physically stop you fucking people from using the internet.
That said, has the answer to the question “did classical Athens do something problematic” ever, in all its history and all subsequent discussion, been “no?”
Not to me. Not if it’s classical Athens.

I love how the search function on this site is absolute garbage. I can look up a post word for word and I will NEVER find it
Pro tip:
Wanna find a post?
Write out what you remember into a Google search.
After you write that out, end with site:tumblr.com
Google will search for your text on just tumblr
In my experience, it’s way more effective than searching through Tumblr
(you can use site:SITENAME.com to search any site btws)
This usually works but for some reason a lot of posts get indexed on google from a person’s URL based on the posts that were recently reblogged on page 1, meaning that this is only a tiny bit more reliable.
I HAVE a solution to this, you have to write down site:tumblr.com/post “ “
and then write a direct quote (could be a fraction of a sentence) into the quotations, I’ve been doing this for years, and it’s so useful, it works like 99% of the time
(the more popular a post is the more likely you’ll find it)
you’re a genius holy shit
Just used this to find a post I’ve been desperately searching for, thank you so much
People keep requesting to add my fic to collections and I don’t know if they know this, and I don’t know if people who allow their own stories know this, but once you add your story to a collection, the owner of the collection can perform fuckery with your story.
Like, I’m REALLY glad that collections exist, and I’ve put my work into some collections when I made those things specifically for those collectuons. Collections are a useful tool for things like bangs, where the stories need to be hidden until the reveal….. but that also means that the person in charge has the ability to hide your works from the public. Like, without you agreeing, because you already “agreed” to that by submitting to the collection. Which means works you previously had available suddenly disappear from where people can find them.
What I’m saying is please stop random requests to random people to be in your random collections. I know you probably don’t have ill intentions, but there’s no way to tell. And if you’re getting requests to be part of random collections, please be aware that if you approve them, you won’t be the only one in control of some elements of your posted stories, including whether or not they “exist” to the average reader. If they mark the collection as “unrevealed,” you story stops being accessible to the public. And they have the option to mark the collection “anonymous” which I’m pretty sure turns the author from being You to being Anonymous.
And I say all of this because I have seen this happen to people. I have had friends whose stories “disappeared” because they approved a random collection invite and the collection owner turned everything “unrevealed” (likely without even knowing or understanding that it would hide it for EVERYONE not just hide the collection so no one would see they had it, it’s not like a private bookmark). And while I haven’t seen anyone do this maliciously (at least none I can prove) I can see where it could be USED maliciously. So please, just be careful out there.
I wish AO3 had a way to auto decline collection invites- they gave us a way to auto-accept, so I don’t understand why the opposite isn’t true. If I wanted my story to be part of a collection, I’d submit it myself.
Uhh okay, so someone replied to this that they didn’t know how to remove a work from a collection.
Copy and past the following link, and where it says “yourusernamehere” type in your AO3 pseud.
https://archiveofourown.org/users/yourusernamehere/collection_items?approved=true
This should take you to a page where your works that have been approved for collections resides. You can remove your works from collections by selecting “rejected” instead from the drop down menus.
If the direct link doesn’t work: go to your AO3 dashboard, click “collections” on the side bar, click “manage collected items” button at the top right, click “approved” button at the top right, and you’ll be at the right page to remove your works from collections.
hey! so from someone who tried her hand at making a collection to collect fics centered around a specific theme, I found out a super cool thing! you can create collections of bookmarks.
want to add a fic you love to that super-specific collection you made for Fics With Werewolves Set In London? bookmark it and add the bookmark to your collection!
no fuss, no muss, no permission required from the author (since it’s YOUR bookmark), no chance of fucking up their fic (since it’s YOUR bookmark), presto chango, you have a collection that rocks but doesn’t rock a poor fic writer’s boat!
Thank you for this info, this is very valuable (and relieving) knowledge.
So please, as readers, this is a MUCH BETTER option!!
This has been fixed by ao3. If someone attempts to alter/change/hide your story/stories that they’ve added into a collection, ao3 pings it and issues an e-mail to the author directly saying that it has happened. Then they offer you the option to remove the story from the applicable collection. Accepting a collection request is completely fine and will not affect your published works.

just to be clear, the fact that music was nominated for a golden globe is absolutely disgusting. every single (adult) involved in that gross, ableist movie should be sickened by themselves.
for those of you who don't know, music (2021) is a movie being directed by sia about a nonverable autistic girl. not only does it not include any actually autistic people in the movie itself but it also only took advice from autism speaks which is looked at as a hate group by the majority of the autistic community. leaked scenes have also shown the movie glorifying prone restraints which are incredibly dangerous and have resulted in major injuries and even death to disabled people as recently as last year.
autistic people just like me have been incredibly outspoken about how harmful this movie is but the allistic have been mostly silent. we are already seeing reviews calling this movie 'inspiring' and important' and it's absolutely horrific! we need your help calling this out. please stand with us and call out this disgusting display of disrespect to autistic folks.
💛 - your local actually autistic pal
p.s. please, please reblog if you aren't autistic.
actually im gonna say it again. if u see a m/f couple and think “EWWW heteros 🤢🤢🤢“ i will put u in the fucking morgue. bi ppl exist. transhets exist. maybe start remembering that lol
Also! Het couples who feature poc or a white person and a poc are a big deal too bc most media is just white relationships whether gay or straight or whatever!
hey reblog this version
why is it that half the time i read posts on this fucking website it’s like: Person A(dipshit): Eww, m/f couple? Straight people are gross! Person B (less of a dipshit): Hey now, don’t say that! That m/f couple could be bi or trans! Me, out loud to myself and also in the notes: I Don’t Know How To Explain To You That Not Being Queer Isn’t A Fucking Crime, And Going “Oh They Secretly Are Queer So You Shouldn’t Attack Them!” Misses The Point So Fucking Hard
This still blows my mind
After seeing the thousands of tags and comments:
1. Yes this is real. And no, this is not limited to the US. Many other countries around the world subject autistic people of all ages to these same mistreatments, you just never hear about it. Government doesn’t WANT you to hear about it because they don’t want autistic people to have the same rights as everyone else. This is why self dx is ALWAYS valid if you’re autistic. This is why nts should always support and BELIEVE autistic people
2. Some people pointed out that even when you get a diagnosis, some employers/schools/etc don’t consider you “autistic enough” to need the accommodation or take you seriously, so you essentially get it for nothing; sometimes you sacrifice basic rights for accommodation you really need, and they still may not even give the accommodation to you. This is also why words like “high functioning” and “low functioning” are very damaging to autistic people because if I’m diagnosed autistic but a university labels me as “high functioning” because I don’t “seem that autistic” then I’m not seen as worthy of assistance I desperately need and my asks for help are ignored. But when they want to bar me from accessing something, suddenly they say I’m “too autistic” to use it properly. Functioning labels cater to the interests of industries, systems, and institutions who wish to control which services and rights they think an autistic person is worthy of, and their use severely impacts anyone looking for accommodation
3. People saying “they can’t fire you for being autistic. File a claim with the government,” I know you mean well, but governments in most parts of the world throw out/glaze over disability cases ALL the time. It that illegal? Yup! But does it still happen? Yup! Businesses fire autistic people all the time for autistic traits and say the reason was unrelated to being autistic and gaslight us if we try to file a claim. If people in power cared at all about us, we would not be terrified on a massive scale of being diagnosed because we know for some people—especially those from marginalised groups—it can mean never having the same rights or treatment as anyone else ever again if someone sees we have an official dx. It is 2021 and we are STILL getting treated like animals and infantilised due to having a diagnosis and it is completely unacceptable
4. Even if your diagnosis never has created problems for you, even if you’ve never personally seen it around you, neglect of autistic people due to someone seeing their diagnosis happens ALL the time. Always remember to look outside your own experiences.
5. I mentioned it in my tags but when you get a diagnosis for school/work/legal services for the “proof” you need for their assistance policy or financial aid, often times the only “proof” they use it for is to support you being suddenly unable to do anything. We use the diagnosis to get financial aid only to be told you are not allowed to earn a livable income or have any more than a little bit of money in your bank accounts at any given time or else you get punished. Insurance companies hike up our rates. Doctors suddenly think all of our medical issues are caused from being autistic or we must be “confused” and refuse to take us seriously. Instead of using it for accommodation, schools use it to disrespect me, my limits, and my needs and assume I will perform poorly instead of providing simple assistance that would allow me to succeed. Work uses it to back up why I’m unfit for tasks I was just doing fine a moment ago or why I deserve less hours when they should instead be accommodating of me and not treating my basic needs like a burden or avoiding talking to me. In the US, it is legal for some companies to pay autistic employees less than half than the minimum wage, some paying less than $1 an hour, some pay as little as 14 cents an hour.
6. And yes, an autism diagnosis, if seen by some adoption agencies, can cause them to deem you unfit to care for a child or restrict your right to adopt in certain countries
7. This is not even the tip of the iceberg to potential risks of diagnosis
It’s up to the individual whether or not they want to seek diagnosis if they didn’t already receive one younger. For some people, a diagnosis considerably improves their life and provides many benefits! Others find their life considerably more difficult than they did before receiving a dx. While this comic isn’t meant to scare anyone, it is meant to bring attention to an frightening issue I never really see anyone discussing when the topic of diagnosis comes up and I’m glad to see people are actually boosting the info

hey ao3 can you like give the extra $38k you made from this month’s funds drive to charity
You know it legally is a charity, right?
If x charity aims for £10, but gets £15, would you expect then to give back the extra five or give it then to another charity? No. Any extra costs go into the “rainy day” fund; sometimes servers crash or break, sometimes false reports are made that require the legal team, sometimes you need to hire coders or what not to implement new features or fix bugs or deal with broken code …
The money they aimed for is the bare minimum, which goes towards things like basic server costs and domain names and legal advice and so forth, but they don’t just “pocket” the rest (as people claim). It’s not a business. It has no advertisements. It needs some “rainy day” cash to function.
You can’t ask a charity to give money to another charity.
It needs what it gets to function and improve.
kiena-tesedale replied to this post
They don’t “pocket” excess money. They have a publicly accessible budget - waaaay more info than most charities, in fact. In it, you can clearly see where each dollar goes. (Also, you are vastly underestimating either how much traffic AO3 gets or how much servers/hosting costs.)
In my experience, people who don’t work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. I’m talking “more than the library of congress” crazy. The only reason it doesn’t require Netflix levels of data serving is that it’s text based rather than video.
AO3 is in the top 300 websites in the world, and the top 100 in the US. It is the number 2 literature website.
Number 2 in the entire world. JSTOR is 20.
It sees about 6 million people a day. About 250k an hour. Each of those people is loading multiple pages, many are running searches that execute on literally hundreds of potential variables per search. The demands involved are astronomical.
JSTOR, btw, makes 85 million dollars a year.
It’s 18 ranks below AO3′s traffic, and takes in 650 times the amount of money.
But let’s say you think that’s an unfair comparison. Would you say that the Project Gutenberg Literature Archival Group- another text based archive that handles literature operating outside traditional copyright requirements- is more similar?
Because it sees all of 4% of the traffic that AO3 handles.
Care to guess its budget?
Double that of AO3.
AO3 is doing shit on the kind of shoestring budget that I fully, 100% cannot comprehend. And that’s just the archival service.
The 130k also pays for the OTW’s legal team, which they use to defend the right of fandom to fucking exist.
It’s absolutely batshit fucked up that people are fighting to have the OTW defunded and AO3 shut down. They are the only organized group that actually stands directly between fandom- all the art and the fics and the vids and the music and the chats and the memes and everything we love about interactive, transformative work- and an incalculable amount of lawsuits.
This.
I need answers. Are mermaids kosher? What did your rabbi say???
As per my rabbi, mermaids are NOT kosher, due to the following:
1) If mermaids are like Ariel from The Little Mermaid, then they have human intelligence and free will. This makes them human (whatever King Triton might have to say on the subject), and thus eating one is committing murder, which is against halacha. (She could convert to Judaism, though!)
2) If mermaids are like the original little mermaid, then they have intelligence (possibly of human levels), but no souls and thus no free will. This means they are not human, but they appear human, and thus eating one is in violation of lifnei iver, which means “before the blind” and comes from the verse “do not place a stumbling block before the blind.” In other words: someone seeing you eat the mermaid may assume the mermaid is human, and thus that eating human is okay, and thus they may commit murder to eat human, which is against halacha.
3) Mermaids that do not fit the “human top, fish bottom” tradition of mermaids may not possess fins and/or scales, thus marking them as not kosher.
Thus: Mermaids are not kosher.
Big Jewish Mood
Wait, creatures with human intelligence but no souls are kosher?
Yes and no.
There are no known animal species that have human intelligence and meet the kosher requirements for their kind of animal. Dolphins and octopi don’t have fins and scales, rats aren’t kosher because they’re rodents, crows eat dead things and are predators. Pigs are being studied for the possibility of human intelligence, but pork is like...the one thing even gentiles know isn’t kosher. And monkeys and apes would fall under lifnei iver. I’m sure there’s another rule that applies, but off the top of my head I can already tell you they wouldn’t be kosher. (Koko the gorilla might even be a good starting point for an argument over whether gorillas have souls. She had human intelligence, memory retention, understood emotions, and acted of her own free will.)
With the understanding that I’m a believer in “G-d created science, so duh, of course His rules would match up scientifically, anyone who says science is the enemy of G-d doesn’t understand the actual text very well,” I’d say that running through these is a bit of proof to me that G-d is, indeed, watching over us. Or, since I’m a believer in “G-d is a computer programmer,” that we were programmed for it to be impossible to be 1) human-level intelligent and also 2) kosher.
Elephants are the other near-human intelligence creatures. Are they kosher??? (I'm seriously just curious about this)
Nope. For a four-legged animal to be kosher, it must have hooves and chew cud. I’m not sure if elephants chew cud or not, but they don’t have hooves.
As someone who’s read the OT twice (not from a devotional perspective, but as someone who finds the world’s various religious texts fascinating) the one thing that leapt out at me during my readings is how so many of the constraints in the Torah -- which a lot of people just write off as one people’s set of peculiar little taboos -- actually make sense from a hygienic/health perspective. From dietary practices to concepts of “purification” and “unclean,” the Jews had a lot of practices that, whatever their origin, kept them healthy. It’s a fact that for most of Europe’s history, when the surrounding gentile populations were dropping like flies, Europe’s various Jewish enclaves had a massively lower incidence of those various ills and plagues. To the point that it was not uncommon for the gentile population to blame the Jews for their ills: “We’re being smitten by this pestilence, and yet those Jews aren’t getting sick! They must be doing this to us!” It’s almost like whoever it was that conjured up the various constraints somehow knew that they would keep the people alive and healthy in a world where they were surrounded by populations who did not practice those sound hygienic measures.
YEP.
Even some of the ones that seem ridiculous by modern standards, like “anything a menstruating woman sits on is unclean.” There were no pads or tampons. You bet your ass it was unclean. Whatever rudimentary menstruation containment they’d come up with at that point, it likely leaked and/or easily disarranged itself. You know what you get in a desert climate, living in a tent, with the smell of fresh blood? Predators. like, forget the whole “blood carries disease” (and it did, blood parasites were so common at the time that the Egyptians considered bleeding from the anus normal), you can’t get to the Promised Land if you died of acute wolves. So how to make the items ritually clean and usable again? Fucking wash them. That’s it. They had to be washed.
Or like the “don’t mix fibers of two kinds.” I saw an incredible discussion here on Tumblr about that. Basically, the fibers that were available to the Israelites were linen (lightweight fabric, good for hot weather) and wool (heavy, good for cold weather and rain). Do you know what happens when you try to mix these? You get an unusable mess that will not contain the properties of either fabric. It’s a disaster--a waste of time, labor, and fiber. And if you try to full the fabric (which means a process by which you clean, thicken, and strengthen natural fabrics), the fibers won’t full the same. It’s just bad all around.
Or even, “every seventh year, let your land lie fallow and don’t grow anything.” You know what happens in that year? All the old stalks, leaves, etc. fucking rot. They, in modern lingo, compost. They refresh the soil. They keep you from stripping all the nutrients, so you can continue to grow things. And you can continue to drop as much cowshit as you want on that field to make it nice and fertilize-y during that year. You just can’t grow anything. By the time you come back to planting you’re going to have a nutrient-rich field that’s absolutely raring to provide you with high-quality produce.
This is one of my big beefs with the Orthodox. Ask an Orthodox person about halacha and they’ll say “it doesn’t matter if it lines up with science, G-d said it therefore we do it.” And I’m like . . . one, that’s completely contradictory to the teaching of Torah (which demands you question), and two, the point is, isn’t it fucking fascinating how G-d’s instruction book is scientifically sound. Like we were being, I don’t know, taken care of.
Even as a very secular Jew, I find it fascinating how many of the old laws were basically ancient health and safety regulations, or just make sense. Take regular days off to avoid burnout. Try to minimise the suffering of the animals you eat. Wash your hands before you eat.
I see a set of rules that my ancient ancestors came up with, and instilled it as a fundumental part of their culture, to keep themselves safe. And of course many of them don’t make any sense today! We’re living in a completely different time and place!
We no longer have to worry about burying our dead as fast as possible, because we have refrigeration to prevent rot. Same goes for our meat. We now have fibers that work together. Our society no longer revolves around agriculture, and the harvest of grains, fruits and livestock. But theirs did. The rules made sense they were made!
This also works with Judaism’s doctrine of questioning- it’s an encouragement to change with the times. The rules made sense when they were made, but we’re supposed to ask “does it still make sense today?”
And I feel like a lot of us lost track of that.
You couldn’t just go back to your swamp and leave well enough alone!
SHREK 2 (2004) dir. Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury and Conrad Vernon Holding Out for a Hero performed by Jennifer Saunders as the Fairy Godmother
this kid is 14 oh my god is no one teaching children to protect themselves online anymore…
Meanwhile us olds are like: I don’t have a carrd and I’m not reading yours
Yeah while I’m at it lemme provide my address and final 4 digits of my SSN.
The more often I see shit like this the more I believe that we’re wrong to use the term “digital native” about our young people.
It let’s us off the hook to say “oh they’re tech natives” because it leads to assumptions that they will just magically know the right etiquette around safety. But really when they grow up seeing the digital world as their place, and as a safe place then we’re leaving them completely exposed if we don’t teach them the rules of engagement.
yeah here’s why you don’t want to post any of that stuff for strangers to see:
name: people can narrow down where you live with this. always use an alias.
age: not a good idea to advertise that you’re a minor, especially if you want to avoid predators targeting you. many people don’t want to interact with minors, either, but you can be proactive and just don’t follow those people on your own.
race: again, don’t advertise you’re a minority. not only will this help people doxx you by cross referencing with your name and age, you’re also inviting bigoted harassment. if someone wants you to ‘prove’ you’re any particular race, just leave the conversation.
sexuality: if you’re young then you’re probably still working this out, and it’s liable to change as you learn more about yourself and the world. also, again, people can target you for harassment and bullying if they don’t like your labels. not just conservatives, but radfems and exclusionists can also fuck with you. your sexuality is something you should be talking over with trusted friends, anyway, not wearing as a big public sign.
triggers: do NOT tell absolutely everyone right off the bat the best way to hurt you. install as many blockers as you can to manage your triggers quietly on your own. play a good defense and work to minimize your vulnerability as much as you can. there is a reason humans invented armor, and that’s because protecting yourself works much better than just asking people not to stab you in the soft bits.
dni: ive seen so many ‘do not interact if you’re racist, homophobic, a pedophile…’ but racists don’t actually think they’re racists. pedophiles lie about their intentions. ditto homophobes. DNI lists don’t actually keep bad people away from you, they’re just pointless demonstrations of how Woke you are
byf: i don’t have an objection to this one other than probably no one reads these or obeys them anyway.
