It’s extremely fucked up that some ppl try to make you feel stupid and immature for hoping for a better world. You say you want world peace and mfs think you need a pacifier; dawg, I just don’t want ppl dying from violence. This idea that ppl simply must die as casualties of war is misanthropic to say the least.
but i stay silly! *←said in the most world-weary voice you ever did hear*
“but I stay silly!”
Reblog you stay silly
on it boss
Joy and whimsy detected. This post is joyful and whimsical. I guess
I literally do not know what the hell was going on in that subreddit, but don't do it.
You should be able to breathe like you normally do!

keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don't even get paid for it
Write it badly or it'll never be written

Please keep interacting with this post because when I come to tumblr to procrastinate, this shows up again in my notifications and guilts me into writing again
people on this website be like “it’s actually school’s fault that i don’t know how to read because i wanted to write my essay on the divergent trilogy and that BITCH mrs. clarkson made us study 1984 instead. anyway here’s a 10 tweet thread of easily disproven misinformation about a 3 year old news story and btw, who is toni morrison?”
i KNOW most of y’all are lying about being in the gifted program as children because none of you could pass the basic reading comprehension assessment they give third graders today
this post is mean and I never read divergent or whatever the fuck but 1984 sucks and is rape apologism so if somebody wanted to write about divergent or whatever good for them
this reply is like literally exactly what op is talking about lol. like firstly ops point isn’t “1984 is good”, ops point is that analysing complex stories teaches you how to form opinions and think for yourself. and like secondly in 1984 you’re supposed to think damn it’s fucked up that he’s thinking that way about her, i wonder if this ties in with the central theme of “a society like this will fuck you in the head”? (this is the thinking for yourself part). like do you think orwell just put that in for fun? do you think that just because winston is the protagonist you’re supposed to agree with everything he does?
You know I feel like this post just gave me an epiphany for what is wrong with how Tumblr Fandom/Internet Fandom responds to media-or not *wrong* but makes it very hard to respond to anything but a morally correct, and heroic protagonist.
When an English teacher, or reader, taught or picked up 1984, it wasn’t with the intention they were going to love the protagonist. They picked it up with the intention of reading a whole story and trying to grasp the theme or catharsis from the story. If the protagonist was a *shitty* person it played into the the themes or the story, because it wasn’t about morally judging the book or *liking* or feeling attachment to the protagonist. Sometimes and often times, books were just about gaining another perspective.
No one read Lolita expecting to endear, or like, or be inspired by Humbert. You are supposed to be upset by his behavior, you don’t read Lolita with the intention of being inspired. You read it to learn more about what the fuck is going on inside someone’s head when they behave like that. How children get sucked into abusive situations. Or read “The Great Gatsby” not because they want to fall in love with Gatsby or Nick, but to better understand and analyze the experience of the 1920s or destitution of the American Dream.
A lot of internet and fandom culture has changed that though. When we say something like “I love the Great Gatsby” it comes with the idea or association that means you must *love* or relate to one of the characters. And maybe you do, but the first assumption is not longer about the quality of the work or themes, or cathartic impact-it’s about character admiration. And with that character admiration, in tumblr stan culture, or kin culture, or exalting characters with fanart/romance/so on you don’t just ‘admire’ or find that character ‘compelling’ it now translates to ‘you LOVE that character’ or you ‘DIRECTLY relate to that character.’
You can’t say “I love how Humbert is written, it’s so fascinating and dark”, without it directly translating you somehow relate to a child abuser or condone his actions. Taking in media has become an act of worship and connection. We no longer watch meant to just see the story as a whole, we watch expecting to connect to a character and if we offer them our “worship” as it’s become, as opposed to just attention or interest study as it traditionally was, it means we are condoning the character or saying we directly empathize with all their actions.
I think that’s why there is often now so much fuss over *toxic* characters or not. Or whether that classical novel is showing good or bad things anymore. We’re treating the characters as people we should love or want to draw or write about. Sometimes a story is just about getting the the theme or catharsis or learning another perspective. We don’t NEED to like the character. Or we don’t HAVE to like a character to be impressed by how they’re written or intrigued by their behavior.
I think if internet culture could learn to view stories as small insights into other lives or single takes of one perspective instead of purposeful moral inspirations we’d be a lot less worried about how toxic or not toxic they are.

HC PART ? (I've lost count) (I posted few on X)
Contrary to popular belief, Gaara and Kankuro never really hated Shikamaru that much.
Watching how often Temari transformed into a sane, young woman being giddy over her significant others (not that she would admit it yet) was such a rare sight for them. Both believed that Shikamaru was not your local, good-for-nothing womanizer who will take advantage of their sister like the usual princes they encountered in official banquets. Therefore, they silently observed as the relationship between the two began to develop into something more throughout the years.
Nevertheless, it was not Kankuro without his rage bait tendencies and Gaara, because of his utmost care for his siblings, decided to entertain his older brother by agreeing to the sinister plans he devised.
At first, they tested Shikamaru with the most random questions regarding their sister in the most unpredictable time, catching him off guard. The shadow wielder's reactions never failed to amuse them even though he could not see it—coming from the Sand meant your nonchalant composure would not falter in any kind of circumstances. As the years went by, they started pulling little ridiculous pranks on him (mostly Kankuro though, Gaara preferred to converse unhingedly with him). Temari always scolded them when she found out what they had done. She could sense that these pranks were indirectly directed to her; the poor guy did not deserve the puppeteer's atrocities despite how much she hated his lazy look (did she?).
That was why, after the Fourth Shinobi War, the brothers took a different approach to know the man whom Temari had been infatuated with since 6-7 years ago. Kankuro and Gaara claimed that they had matured, and so had Shikamaru, hence the pranks were not what they should resort to. Moreover, they did not have the heart to really test the guy anymore—he had lost his sensei, father, and had been chosen as the Sixth's assistant in his very young age (they're the same age but both agreed they got their positions now mostly because of their lineage). Oh, that was also the thing: they, even Temari, could barely see him nowadays since his workload kept him confined in office day and night.
However, one day, while the Sunan brothers visited the Ninja Academy to learn the management of it in order to advance their village's education, they did not believe what they saw.
On this sunny day, Nara Shikamaru, with his red headband, matching with Sarutobi Mirai who was now clutching tightly onto him in his back, sprinted off together with other parent-child duos as they all raced toward the finish line. As the youngest "dad" among the men there, Shikamaru won the race, and he cheered with Mirai, cheerfully throwing the little girl in the air before catching her back in time.
Kankuro and Gaara had learned from Kakashi few hours before their arrival here that today was Father's Day in Konoha, a holiday for everyone except the government officials. They thought Shikamaru's absence in the Hokage's office today was just him slacking off like how he usually was. It did not turn out to be the case.
When Kankuro and Gaara threw a glance at the two again, they realized that neither both of them nor Temari had ever experienced the joy of laughing with their own father—being completely unafraid to express any emotions currently overwhelming them. Dwelling in the somber realization, they felt a twinge deep inside their hearts but also a huge relieve at the same time. The sight in front of the siblings somehow healed a bit of their childhood traumas. It was vindicating to know that at the very least, not every man is like their father. Shikamaru, even better, was the exact opposite: he loved that little girl dearly and it was evident in every single thing he did.
In the end, Gaara and Kankuro firmly agreed that they had to start correcting people whenever anyone mistaken them for hating Shikamaru.

I am organizing a lights out protest on tumblr, from March 20th 6AM UTC until March 21st 6AM UTC. It is best if as many tumblr users as possible can join this protest, as a mass downtime in users is the only way the tumblr staff will listen to us.
If you cherish this hellsite, participate. Do your bit. Every person counts.
Thank you for reading, and to @staff @changes: give us our tumblr back, or the people will migrate somewhere else. This is a threat.
