My boyfriend (we are both trans moc) and have had a few donation posts go around Tumblr, and some people have been willing to help, and thatās been incredible, but the situation seems to continue getting worse and itās gotten to the point where our landlord is literally hounding us every single day, even though we made an agreement and signed a contract/payment plan to start payments on the 31st. Including rent for September, we owe them a little over 2k right now.
Last year I escaped a cult, and moved out of the state with my boyfriend to get away from them and from that life, and since then everything has been incredibly difficult, but we managed. My family and friends from back home provide absolutely no support and in fact will not even speak to me. The mental, emotional, physical, and financial toll has been great but we have mostly managed since June 2017.
Over the summer neither of us were working due to health and other reasons, as well as the fact finding work in the city has been considerably more difficult than than anticipated. I started working again on the 14th, but due to health reasons I canāt work more than 3 or 4 days a week. We expected my boyfriend to be able to start work this week as well, but instead he went on a few interviews and as of Friday August 17th he is waiting to hear back from places.
This morning, again, our landlord is claiming that we agreed to make a payment today for our rent, but we did not, we agreed to begin payments on the 31st. Still, even if he had not, I am only working part time and the $400 we agreed to pay would wipe us out completely. Along with that, he expects our rent payment for September ($725) in full by the 5th of September, which is completely unrealistic as I just started working. This is not even mentioning that we have plenty of other bills we also have to pay and a few we are behind on as well.
We live in a poor neighborhood of color in Chicago, and the company that owns our building and most of the buildings in the neighborhood are white yuppies that are gleefully gentrifying the area, and besides raising our rent a few months ago, they are using this as a gentrification tactic.
We cannot afford to be evicted, we canāt afford to move. Whatās even worse on top of all of this, is that our apartment building is not even clean or safe. They refuse to maintain the building and it is all but falling apart. It is a complete health hazard, but they do not care because they are trying to run the poor people of color that live in their buildings out of here to make room for their white tenants. It is disgusting but it is what theyāre doing. We have been through so much this year, I cannot bear having to pick up and start over again. Please, please help us if you can.
