I think a huge part of why makeup culture and plastic surgery are considered ‘feminist’ is because society equates beauty with value and transformed the concept of beauty into a skill instead of an observable reality. The truth is, not every woman is beautiful. And that’s okay. Beauty doesn’t equate value. Desirability doesn’t equate respect. But society makes it seem like it does, and by having the beauty standard be something that can be learned and bought, a lot of women feel in control.
