They are not some anonymous “a tribe in India”, they are the War-Khasi. Speaking as a former anthro student and as a reference librarian, I am beyond sick of posts (and articles, and emails, and museum displays) like this that present the work of a people without actually naming the people. It’s erasure, it’s reducing the great works of a culture to an Ozymandias-esque curiosity for foreigners to consume rather than an accomplishment that should help bring awareness of that culture’s existence. 

They are the War-Khasi, a division of the Khasi, a people who call themselves Hynñiew Trep. They live in Meghalaya, and they have been building these bridges in the town of Cherrapunji for longer than anyone knows. They are not anonymous.

I know this site is very US-centric but I need to say that what the UK government has done to teenagers’ exam results is absolutely disgusting and if you’re in the UK please take a moment to sign this petition (from the Labour party, I recieved this via email because I’m a member) imploring the Tories not to fuck up the futures of kids who don’t go to private fucking schools

The tl;dr is that students obviously haven’t been able to sit exams this year, so the government has devised a clever algorithm that spits out grades for them based on the school’s past performance and moreover the postcode of the school. This has resulted in tens of thousands of students being given grades way below what they deserve and most importantly has denied them conditional university places and bursaries they would have gotten with their correct marks.

In the past two days I’ve read dozens of stories of students who aced their mocks and coursework, who had predicted grades of As and A*s, only to be given Ds and Es because of where the school is. I’ve read dozens of stories of deserving pupils losing their places at prestigious universities because their grades are too low.

Rest assured this algorithm had no ill effect on private schools, which were in some cases awarding their students significantly higher results than their prior grades indicated.

The Conservative education secretary was notably quoted saying “The danger is that pupils will be overpromoted into jobs that are beyond their competence”, as if that doesn’t describe the entire Tory cabinet, in particular B*ris J*hnson.

Video shows Maryland cops REPEATEDLY pepper spray 15-year-old honor roll student.

5 ft 105 lbs girl, whose name has not been officially released yet, was brutalized by Hagerstown police after she on her bike was hit by a car, but refused medical assistance. 

Her family’s attorney says that when police arrived, they grabbed the little girl, lifted her hands above her head and slammed her face into a wall.

“They slammed her against a wall, arrested her for refusing treatment, maced her 4 times in the police car while handcuffed, and took her to the police station instead of the hospital.”

She was put in the car, which is when a bystander began filming the incident. The video shows the 15-year-old with her hands handcuffed behind her back kicking at the police car door and later a cop is heard saying: “Put your feet in, or you’re going to get sprayed!” Officer proceeds to pepper spray her a few times. 

The girl can be heard screaming: “I can’t breathe!”

The girl was only taken to hospital when she was released to her parents. 

Three hours after being pepper sprayed she was finally able to wash her eyes.

She is now charged with disorderly conduct, two counts of second-degree assault, possession of marijuana and failure to obey a traffic device.
