Does Ghostgame have alot of alternate history? I mean are america and Canada still the same and West Salem is in the middle of them or are a lot of things different?

the west half of north america (barring alaska, which is like russian canada) was never successfully colonised. america won the war of 1812 and lost the civil war, so it extends upwards into the maritimes but gets cut short underneath the mason-dixon line. the confederacy has been plagued with problems since it became official and had another civil war in the 1900s, which fractured it even more. there are a few other city-states within the confederacy and a couple areas have seceded back into the north. mexico got involved and took most of texas back with them when they left, and still occasionally threatens to devour more of it. america resembles regular america/canada but isn’t considered a world power because it’s too much fo a hot mess. i don’t think they participated at all in WWI because they were too busy with a war on their own continent. WWI did happen though because it was a complete shitfest, which is exactly what i want in ghostgame.

regular quebec still exists because otherwise i couldn’t make quebec jokes.

i kind of wish i could find it again? just to see if it really was as “romantic” as i remember it being, and if it really was good quality at all. but it’s hard to find these things when people didn’t have much of a choice but to send their amvs off into the void and hope someone finds them eventually. i wonder if anyone’s managed to keep it alive and i mean, it’s possible that it’s still lurking on somebody’s harddrive.

were u ever an invader zim fan?

i am 13 years old and i am sitting in front of my boxy off-white family computer running windows 2000 with my friend at my side. we are busy downloading as many inuyasha amvs of our otp through napster (a precursor to utorrent-type clients) as we can, and we are very scared that someone will call my house and the dial-up connection will be broken. my friend mentions he has a few american internet friends who watch this show called invader zim and apparently it is really good, so we cancel our otp downloads and start searching for zim episodes–napster is our only way to watch american shows at this point because this was before youtube and streaming–and unfortunately we can’t find any. there’s just a ton of amvs. but we download them anyway.

only one ends up downloading properly. it’s a zim/dib amv, very serious, set to the tune of how you remind me by the critically acclaimed rock band nickelback. most of the footage comes from an episode where zim pretends to be a hobo. we thought it was amazing, and watched it over and over.

i haven’t watched or paid attention to invader zim since.

It’s no problem! I drew this a long time ago (it’s almost 4 years old) but I still like it too. I really miss that point in Homestuck when these guys were travelling the barren Earth. I guess it might not seem like that big of a deal to anyone who came in late--it’s pretty simple with 8-bit music, no guest artists or anything--but like, WV: Ascend? When that update first came out it was incredible. I was so pumped. Watching it now still gives me a little flicker of that love I had for the story back then. The exiles still hold a place in my heart even though I’ve all but moved on from HS, and I was really glad to have been chosen to do this album cover.

there isn’t, unfortunately. i haven’t updated it in a long time. as much as i’d like to continue, i’m not sure if i have the drive to do it anymore because i’ve already gone through the five stages of grief with homestuck. bloodbent will always hold a place in my heart, but there’s no space left for the canon it’s based on. ): i think sometimes about continuing it but i cannot promise that there will be or won’t be an update ever again. it is kind of in eternal purgatory because i kinda don’t want to let it go, but i also want to put more work into other things i do than an old fanfic project.

i have written and drawn a lot of extra stuff about it on its tag here, though! my ask box is always open to questions about it and i tend to put a lot of effort into answering any that come in.

russia won the space race and successfully put russian astronaut/hero nikolai silanog on the moon. unfortunately they did not stock the rocket with enough soviet traitor hearts and although it made it to the moon, it never made a return trip.

a few decades later singapore got its own mundane rocket up there and confirmed the moon landing was real once and for all due to the russian remains. then one astronaut killed the other one with a moon-rock or something, and it was fucked up

Do you think Abbie might be part beagle?

she is DEFINITELY part scenthound of some sort. she has every hound behaviour except of the howling (she is extremely quiet and only barks when someone she doesn’t know comes to the door) and when she manages to chase down rabbits she doesn’t harm them and seems to be confused why they don’t want to be held in her mouth.

originally, i thought she was a lab/pitbull cross because she’s got the coat of a lab and a big dumb head with forward facing eyes. from the side her face is houndy but from the front she is super pit-like. i got her because of her personality (i went in searching for a small black dog and came out with the polar opposite) but i really do like the pitbull type of face. i think it’s really sweet and cute. they are my favourite kind of dogs.

but sometimes a mix of two breeds ends up looking like a completely unrelated breed instead of like the parents. it’s possible she isn’t even lab like the humane society assumed. i went looking on google for beagle mixes after i got this ask and there are a few pictures that look EXACTLY like abbie... and they’re beagle/whippets. two hounds make a lanky pitbull i guess? it’s funny to imagine that all her littermates were tiny needly whippets with huge ears and abbie was the single monstrous outlier, a big beefy gangly thing with a square head. so thank you a lot for suggesting a beagle cross!! i think you might be right!!

btw: i have a new dog and a lot of my time lately has been spent getting her used to the house and me getting used to a new routine. i have not had any time to sit at the computer and draw at all recently so some asks will be delayed but i will answer them all with pictures if i can. but you got to be a little patient

this is abbie. she is a lab/??? mutt from the shelter and is about 1 and a half years old. i think she is partly some kind of scenthound because she is very good at tracking and chasing rabbits specifically and she is fuckin fast enough to catch them, but has 0 instinct to kill them. she just holds things gently in her mouth. she is very sweet, intelligent and well behaved most of the time but still gets excited easily and has some really annoying puppy behaviours that any previous owners did not train her out of so i need to put effort into teaching her not to do that shit (especially because she is a big dog). plus i got to get her basic commands done to start doing agility training with her because she is freakishly athletic. this is the best picture i have of her and it is not very good, it’s hard to get her to pose for the camera

hi i was at the same jobsite as last time so i remembered my question! in some cities one or more industries are fronts/side business for organized crime (ie: garbage, construction, movers); is it safe to assume that pretty much everything but fire/police/medical is a front for crime? is even the post office corrupt??

it’s safe to say that if a service or business exists in west salem it is probably involved with organised crime. not necessarily willingly--there are some people out where who are just trying to make honest livings, but their businesses couldn’t survive without dealing with a gang or two. that was basically the point of case 1. that restaurant was a family-owned place that tried not to associate with any Bad Guys until it was in dire straits, got fucked over when they did, and then the place was accidentally destroyed by a tiny dumbass robber anyway so none of their efforts mattered in the end. also, the daughter now has a bald spot on the top of her head like a monk. the only person who “won” in that situation was mace, who got to keep the robber’s severed arm eventually.

i can’t say more about the police because it’s spoilers aside from the fact that there are definitely crooked cops. the deputy chief tries to keep them out of her division (or at least away from the important jobs) but she is not always successful because there’s just so many and they are not always easy to detect. i guess it’s ok to say that the police, fire departments and hospitals are some of the few openly municipal services though. others like ambulances and trash pickup are privatised and the main companies are pretty territorial about who is allowed to operate in what neighbourhoods during what time, and the territories completely coincidentally tend to line up with gang territories for some reason.

the post office is notoriously awful in corvus. they probably are here too but i don’t have any plans to include any mail-related things at this point. the problems in corvus are more like the guys who are trusted to keep mail safe from highwaymen sometimes turn out to be highwaymen themselves. in west salem it’d be more like gangsters send out a package to a rival labeled “definitely not illegal cow intestines with a trigger tag that activates when someone open the box” and the mail guys are like “alright sounds legit” and deliver it, but they also snoop around in harmless mail and “lose” packages they want to keep themselves.

you’ll see trash collectors in a case though. until now you have only interacted with figuratively garbage people, but you will eventually meet the literal ones.

Who are the most important factions in West Salem? Are there several criminal groups about, for example?

virtually everyone living there is incompetent, corrupt, angry, and/or sadistic. this city is one of the biggest suppliers of ectoplasm in the world thanks to the constant cloud of misery above it and that is how its mayor/dictator wants it to be. i don’t know if i should be listing factions though! some are spoilers!!

from what they’ve already seen/heard about, i guess:

the protagonists are in the poltergeist unit of the local precinct. everyone hates the police because they have a reputation for being useless corrupt idiots and that description is generally pretty accurate. the deputy chief does her best but it is hard to do your best when all the materials you have are very bad. also most of her time is spent writing dragon YA fiction in wingdings so she is not exactly a shining example either. FUKK COPS is spraypainted on the front of the building and no one can clean it up so everyone working there has just tried to embrace it

the fire department are very dumb and good natured and they are a bastion of innocence in this cruel world. they think everything is amazing. they are also uniformly bad at their jobs and metaphors confuse them

mayor adella leachman and her council. council members are very rich and very into abusing their authority and most of them are probably in gangs of their own. mayor leachman has been ruling over them for ?? years and if anyone has ever tried to usurp her in the past they have failed very badly

they haven’t had any direct run-ins yet with a crime boss who goes by the moniker aunt nancy, but they’ve run into some of her low rank minions and have been warned about her. they are very professional and courteous with their smuggling/drug dealing operations and they are difficult to pin crimes on. they generally don’t operate like you’d expect a salem gang to operate and they’ve been gaining a lot of traction for a group that’s only made a name for itself in the past few years, which pisses off other gangs in the area

medical professionals are usually evil. i’m putting them as a faction of their own because the players end up in the hospital every few sessions so they have to deal with them fairly often. the head nurse runs a patient death pool, they regularly extort patients for money when healthcare is supposedly free, and they are just very mean. there is one that is not as bad as the others but that’s literally only because one player rolled 20s to date him and now it’s like the collective otp. he is still a bad unethical nurse who is very unsuited for his job tho

yeah, at least culturally. her family has its roots in lebanon but she hasn't been there herself. she is not very good at being religious and i don’t think it’s very easy to believe in a benevolent god when you’ve grown up in west salem, but she kinda tries, mostly to feel closer to her family (who she is not currently in contact with). technically the player characters have not seen her in hijab yet--not “onscreen” anyway-- because she’s only started wearing it since she joined the police force. it is a visual character development thing that doesn’t exactly work because ghostge is all text... after the case 2 events she’s found a real purpose, which she didn’t really have before, and the road is gonna be dangerous and unforgiving, so she wears this thing that gives her a connection to her estranged family and is a symbol of commitment to her cause and divine protection.

ofc the actual reason i decided to give her a headscarf was because i wanted her to wear a thing that looks like the black cowl charon the ferryman is depicted with.

the only other character we have who has any obvious ties to religion is hendrick, who is a pc. he is in a cult that worships a god named heth and followers generally believe that the human body in its entirety is sacred including like toenails and stuff, so any magic using human materials is prohibited. hendrick’s solution is to carry a bag full of volatile animal blood and parts to use instead of using human entrails like normal people.

i try to avoid filling the outside world out too much because the story is never going to leave the confines of one district of a sprawling satan-worshipping city-state. i have some notes on what mexico and kongo are like because there are characters who moved here from those countries, and some about the state of north america in general, but not much else. i don’t really plan on delving into religion anywhere because i want to keep it fun and kinda simple in case any players want to expand that on their own. however it is canon that jehovah’s witnesses are reviled as tax evaders since they do not want others to use their blood and i think at least some sects of the abrahamic faiths decided worshipping god was a lost cause and figured that since they were going to hell anyway they might as well try to get on the devil’s good side. the entire world is a hive of scum and villainy
