This is so funny because of how long a chain of telephone it is. The starting point is that grapefruit juice SPECIFICALLY can interact negatively with several mental health medications (notably, not amphetamines). Then this tumblr post* and MULTIPLE NEWS ARTICLES got popular, stating that consuming anything acidic (including vitamin C) within an hour of taking your ADHD meds would render them ineffective. In reality, a large dose of vitamin C taken directly with an amphetamine-based ADHD medication has the potential to cause a minor dampening effect, but has no effect on other ADHD meds. 

These presumably got filtered/combined into the idea that vitamin C is bad to take with ANY mental health meds, which then got turned into the idea that if you have mental health problems, scurvy may be right for you!

In general there wasn’t a lot of funny story material when I worked selling jewelry. People were much more formal and serious about dropping thousands of dollars.

But there was one weird thing that absolutely rocked my whole world when I worked there.

So picture this, me, a freshly minted sales associate ready to greet my first customer. In walks the most fashionable old woman you’ve ever seen. Fur jacket, designer clothes, dripping with jewelry.

I chirp a greeting and she tells me she’s in to get her jewelry cleaned. No problem, it’s a free service we offered and I was happy to do it. But she doesn’t reach for the ring, which in case you were wondering houses a diamond worth more than my annual income. She begins to raise her hand.

At first I watched with puzzlement but it soon grew into mounting horror as she inserted her beautifully manicured arthritic finger into her mouth and began sucking. She worked saliva between the fine jewelry and her knuckle and then triumphantly pulled her finger from her mouth, sans ring.

She then spat her glistening ring into her palm and offered it to me with the confidence of someone who knows she won’t be questioned on her manners by a peon like me.

Shivering with unvoiced disgust I held my hand out and tried not to flinch as she dropped it into my palm.

When I’d finished I ran into the diamond room where we all congregated and frantically conveyed the absolutely horrific thing that just happened to me. I was met with the hardened stares of people who dealt with this on the regular.

“All the old ladies do it,” I was informed

I got quicker on the draw to grab a jewelry show pad for them to put their slimy mouth rings into so I didn’t have to touch them, but it was a biweekly occurrence.

Hi, this may seem random but I need someone to talk to about this (besides my therapist.) I'm getting top surgery next month but I am so fucking scared. I've never had any kind of surgery before and I'm having to go abroad to get the surgery. I'll have a friend with me to help with recovery but I'm so scared I'll get to the hospital and just break down out of fear and want to leave. But I need this surgery. Dysphoria is so bad I don't leave the house anymore. I quit my uni course it was that bad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Well, what do you think you are afraid of, and how can you mitigate that?

Bad results? Show the surgeon examples of what you want, discuss how much tissue to leave, size and position of nipples & scars, anything else you can think of. Don't be afraid to be specific! After surgery, give yourself time. Follow all surgical instructions and keep your scars protected. Talk with your care team on when you can start massage and silicone strips.

Being naked? This is their day job -- surgeons have seen it all. What they don't see enough of is kind and polite patients. Be nice, be engaged, ask for stuff when you need it, say thank you, and they'll love you. Going under? Modern anesthesia is pretty damned cool. You will go out like a light and suddenly you will be in the recovery room. Tell the nurses in advance you are anxious and if they can give you anything there - usually they do in your IV. Transphobia from your care team? In general, medical providers who offer gender affirming care are pretty stoked to do this stuff, given the astronomically high positive impact it has on patients. They really love seeing how much happier we are. The pain? Be honest about your pain when you are still in the hospital. Make sure you take your meds on time. The worst of the pain is pretty brief - I was at a" 7" when I woke up around noon, and by dinner later that eve, I just wanted to eat a cheeseburger. You can reduce recovery pain by having a comfortable place to sleep, minimizing big movements, and keeping your drains (if any) clipped to a neck lanyard so they don't get snagged on anything. Be prepared to check even carry-on luggage for your flight home. Imo, most of your experience is going to be tightness, itching, and general discomfort/fatigue. Recovery will likely be more annoying than actually painful. Feeling gross? Imo, not being able to shower was the worst. Get yourself some fun lounge clothes. Have a supply of face wash and washcloths. Get a haircut right before surgery. Post-anesthesia depression? This is a thing for a lot of people, so be prepared. Have a bunch of comfort media queued up and other distractions, especially friends to chat with. Journaling is also useful. Recovery in general? Prep your living space to make your life easier. Move things down from high shelves and cabinets. Do big loads of laundry and other big chores now. Meal prep. If you have to reach something like a microwave, have a stepstool ready. Here's my own recovery blog, if that helps.

Imo, the dysphoria and fear can get super intense right before surgery. My dysphoria spiked like crazy. But the pain and discomfort are so, so brief compared to a lifetime of feeling aligned in your own body.

Think about all the things that will change for the better - less layers in the summer, more freedom for swimming/sports/outdoor activities, etc.

I think that would be so much funny. He wakes up on a remote beach in Jamaica and he only speaks/understands Brythonic and Medieval Latin. Locals assume he was a tourist who fell from a cruise ship or received a head injury and floated away from a resort. The authorities cannot match his description to any missing persons reports and his fingerprints and DNA produce no hits on INTERPOL. They suspect he may be Welsh or French because the language he speaks resembles Welsh or Breton but France and the UK both state he is not a citizen of their country. Stateless and deeply confused, he is taken in by the community near the beach where he was found, being cared for by a number of local families and doing odd jobs. He slowly learns English and adjusts to the contemporary world, uncertain if his belief that he is the legendary King Arthur was formed by whatever traumatic event caused him to end up Jamaica or if he is actually King Arthur and Prydain is in eminent peril. Mysterious letters from Morgan begin to reaffirm his belief he is King Arthur. He must choose between staying in Jamaica and continuing the happy life he has made for himself or finding a way to get back to Britain without any documentation.
