Please, we urgently need 700⬠for emergency surgery for my nephew. His health has deteriorated significantly; he is now in a coma and unconscious, suffering greatly. Time is running out, and every moment is crucial for him.
My nephew is his parents' only child. He lost his father in this genocide in the Gaza Strip and suffered multiple traumas during this war. He has already had one operation and now needs another. Please don't leave him alone. Donate towards his operation. I don't want to lose him like I lost my mother and brother. Please donate, donate!
Have you seen that foreign activist weeping bitterly over the children of Gaza and the way they are dying? I hope everyone here feels that same emotion and helps save my nephew by making his surgery possible. Please, do not let my nephew die; we still need 650 euros to cover the cost of the operation. Please, I beg you to donate. šš
No one has donated yet, and we still need 650 euros. I swear to you, losing my nephew would be a devastating blow to me. Please, he is suffering from a critical illness and is fighting for his life; you are my only hope. Please help me fund the surgeryāplease donate, please donate. ššš
Hey yaāll here I am, once again asking for help. Iāve been trying not to as much and Iāve managed okay, but recently my rent has been raised and whilst Iām looking for a new place the housing market is insane. I just need to be able to get some groceries and dog food for the next week, this summer has been rough on everyone, Iām well aware. Seriously, the state of the world sucks right now š But if anyone could help me get through until the end of the month, that would be appreciated. I need about 50 bucks, I know thatās not a lot, but for me thatās a ton and I can make it stretch pretty darn far.
If youāre able to; I have a Ko-Fi set up, as well as my PayPal - [email protected]
Since Iām in Canada, thereās no Venmo or CashApp, I know that a lot of people prefer that but unfortunately Iām unable to use it in my part of the world.
If youād like me to pay you back, like itās just a loan/borrow, let me know and Iāll pay you back the moment I get paid.
can anyone on this gay ass website give me an opinion on which translation of the epic of gilgamesh i should read? ive been wanting to read it for ages but theres a number of common translations and i know translations can make or break a story; i dont want to start with the wrong one
I've read a few so I can offer recommendations! I started with the Sandars translation, which is a good starting point but a pretty early translation. Benjamin Foster's translation is one of my favourites, and the version I read (Second Norton Critical Edition) includes some really interesting discussion essays with it. Andrew George's translation received an update a couple of years ago so is up to date with Foster's translation, though I prefer how the language flows in Foster's.
I would also recommend Gilgamesh Retold by Jenny Lewis for a translation with a more modern poetic take.
Benjamin Fosterās Gilgamesh condenses all the different tablets weāve found together to make one cohesive narrative which is way less intimidating and therefore my go-to if you want something that feels cohesive while also sticking very close to the language of the original. 10/10
Andrew George is the most thorough and up-to-date, and sticks as close to the text as you can get. It does, however, separate out all the different tablets, and feels very unedited in its style. Definitely not a āprettyā version. 10/10 cuz heās a legend and this is the most definitive scholarly edition but donāt start with it.
Maureen Kovacs has a lovely translation with some very interesting footnotes on word choices. Her Ninsun is absolutely incredible and if you want to cry your eyes out over Gilgameshās fate thatās the one for you. Itās one step up from Fosterās in terms of poetic-ness but still pretty close to the original. 8/10
Sophus Helle is more poetic than Kovacs but BRILLIANT, one of my favourite Enkidus and his Shamhat is wonderful. Top favourite of all time. This is a very good starting point. 9/10
I wouldnāt recommend Sandars simply because itās prose, and also condenses the twelfth tablet into a nice tidy ending that doesnāt really work with the Standard Babylonian narrative. 6/10
Lewisā Gilgamesh Retold is more of a poetic retelling than a translation; itās beautiful but definitely not a starting point. Sweet and gentle Enkidu though, very charming. 7/10
Stephen Mitchell Iām not a fan of. He smooths the poem out into something tame and very expected. This is my personal bias but I really dislike his Shamhat. His Enkidu and Gilgamesh are also explicitly more like brothers, which is a valid interpretation but also again not one I lean towards. 5/10
Herbert Masonās Gilgamesh has some stunning moments in it (Enkidu! They do not know you like I know you!) However it is nowhere near the real text BUT closer than Lewisā. Changes the ending of the poem so itās about Gilgamesh mourning Enkidu rather than mourning his own mortality; a much sadder conclusion with less resolution than in the Standard Babylonian. 7/10
BONUS ROUND:
Derek Hinesā play GILGAMESH is fucking DERANGED guys. Ten Gilgillion out of ten.

Please Don't Let Me Lose My Family. August Is Our Last Chance
Thank you from the bottom of our broken hearts. For nearly three years, you have stood beside my family through this devastating war. Your kindness has helped me support them as they have endured life in tents, unimaginable hardship, and the constant fear of bombardment and death.
We will never forget your compassion or the hope you have given us.
Now, FINALLY!!!, There is HOPE ...
I have been informed that my familyās evacuation is expected to take place in August. However, the Irish Embassy and the Department of Justice require us to show sufficient funds in our bank account before family reunification visas can be issued for my wife and our four children.
Without these funds, we cannot complete the visa process, and my wife and children will remain in Gaza, where their lives are in constant danger from bombing, starvation, and the devastating conditions they face every day. Even worse, my elderly parents, siblings and their children entirely depend on funds I send them in the incredibly harsh conditions they live!
We lost our home and everything we had in this hellish war and all my wife and children have right now is a tent in the living hell of Gaza.
My Irish college is providing the necessary supporting documents, but we urgently need your help to meet the financial requirement for them to be able to start a new life in Ireland.
If you are able, please donate and share my GoFundMe with friends and others who may have compassionate hearts.
Your support could help save the lives of my wife and four children.
Please Donate if you can, reblog our life saving blog and share with your friends.
Your kindness and support is the only hope I have to save my family!
People say: "Family always comes First," and to that, I say: "Amen!".⦠Mahmoud Khalaf needs your support for Death chases my family in Gaza;

i've been asked where/how to find early-mid 20th century images of black people to reference when drawing/writing/whatever, so i figured i'd link to my own personal resource anyone is welcome to utilize! :)
with over 900 pins and counting, this pinterest board focuses entirely on black style from the 1800s - 1970s. itās been harder than ever to research historical fashion without running into AI, misinformation, and flat out mislabeling of different eras, so iāve done my best to represent each period as accurately as i can.
iāve included sections for non-caricatured art and illustration, print media, music, entertainment, styling tools, and ads. there are also sections for period pieces and more modern takes on vintage style. i did not add the 80s and 90s because there's already a wealth of imagery and information about those decades, but maybe one day :)
*NOTE: i am not a professional archivist or historian! just a black american passionate about my history. as such, this board is heavily centered on black americans and afro-caribbeans, although there are photos from across the diaspora, including africa and the UK.
*additionally: pins on pinterest come from all over and may not always have the correct information, depending on who uploaded it. while iāve taken great lengths to research undated photos, some categorized pins are educated guesses based on the hair, fashion, or photography style of the photo. uncategorized pins are photos i canāt confidently connect to a specific decade without potentially mislabeling.
with this in mind, this board acts as a handy visual guide, but should be used in addition to your own research.Ā happy researching! š¤
thereās this extremely kind soul of a woman on instagram that makes accessible recipes that donāt require standing, chopping, or a stove and she might just have a permanent place in my heart
