i love the silm fandom and idc that i’m getting sappy on main. i love that we call maedhros nelyo and maitimo and russandol. i love that we call maglor kano and celegorm tyelko. i love that we affectionately call it silm and not the silmarillion. i love that we write heartwrenching fics and then the cutest, fluffiest oneshots right after. i love scrolling through my dash and seeing the most beautiful fanart known to man because if we don’t have a screen adaptation you better know the artists are gonna make one themselves. i love seeing edits that are literally just animated fanart and phonk music but that are on another plane of reality. i love headcanons. i love fanon. i love the canon. i love that we can all read silm and though we might have different opinions on characters and themes and blorbos we all are united in our overwhelming, indescribable love for it. i love how we all collectively defend maedhros. i love seeing the most unhinged ship tags ever on fics and them being actually really well written. i love that i’ve never read a single badly written silm fic in my life. i love that we can make shitposts about our fav kinslayers and then 2k word essays on the length of turgon’s sword right after. i love russingon. i love beleg and turin. i love how we took material that has such rigid, archaic language and made it our own, brought it to life. idc i love this fandom so much y’all are everything.

Rog is a design opposite to Maeglin. Maeglin covers every inch of his skin because he feels vulnerable and Rog shows a lot of skin because he feels vulnerable. I wanted his design to feel more active and moveable while also being beautiful and showing his statue as a lord and one of the greatest Ñoldor smiths.

the musketeers in 3 musketeers probably suck on purpose

as i'm reading, i'm finding that this book is surprisingly funny, but a lot of the humor comes from irony. explicit description of the musketeers seems to not stop raving about how cool these guys are, but a few pages later, we'll be reading about some cornball shit they just did, or them losing all their money in duels or gambling, or them being terrors to the people around them.

for instance, in the getting-the-money-for-their-uniforms section, it's pretty clear that these are some really pathetic guys. see: the whole porthos and procuress situation.

first, d'artagnan sees porthos in the church talking to the procuress, and since this means porthos has a mistress, d'artagnan thinks it's basically awesome (access to women = access to power). but as the audience, we know that porthos has literally no other option for money but to manipulate a woman trapped in a marriage to a man much older than her. when porthos is at dinner at her house, he's constantly humiliated. it's embarrassing for him to be greeted by the clerks, he thinks the food is below him, and we get the sense that he's even sort of disgusted by the procuress's physical/romantic attraction to him. but because porthos can't stop gambling and doing macho musketeer shit, he needs her. also, he keeps lying about her social position to the musketeers & d'artagnan to make her seem richer than she is.

basically, you have this contrast between what we're being told about porthos (he's so cool, he has a rich mistress) and what we're shown (he's got a hole in his wallet, he humiliates himself for money in private). it fits perfectly with his initial introduction to d'artagnan where he shows off his fancy little cape that has a plain interior.

this irony is where a lot of the humor comes from. it's funny to read about a guy who's just been bragging about how rich and cool his mistress is having to ditch a cheap horse she bought him because d'artagnan recognized it as the horse he sold for a loogie and 3 pieces of lint!

basically, i think it's arguable that a theme of the three musketeers is that the ancien regime (or men, or masculine adventure) looked sick as hell, but also was pathetic and sucked and was, in a lot of ways, non-functional.

we're supposed to think the musketeers are cool, but also, not that cool. they're like clowns we watch through fingers over our eyes. we open the newspaper to the new serialized section to see what these bozos have gotten themselves into next. reading it this way is, in my opinion, much more entertaining and engaging than reading the musketeers as actual examples of masculine morality and grandeur.

It's so hard to put them on a drawing together. He's 7 feet and the Haladin are described as small. I think I made Haleth around 5'5 which makes her a tall Haladin woman. But she's still so smoool

Anyway I think Elenwë convinced Turgon to cross the Ice. This solves two problems for me: (a) why Turgon was opposed to Fëanor in the big Oath-swearing, Finweans-have-an-argument episode but chooses to go anyway, and (b) why he builds Tirion 2.0 in Middle-earth. He never wanted to be there. He went for Elenwë’s sake, and now she’s dead, and he wants to go home. (Also it gives Elenwë some fun agency.)

Then they are re-embodied and are furious with each other. They don’t want to be, but they are.
