I feel like "trump wants to throw away literal dinosaur fossils" would really turn heads if we actually had a functional opposition party in this country to get messages out, but I guess I'll just have to get a paint pen and write it on my car. fine, I'll do it.
Trump and friends are trying to get rid of IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Science, USA Federal agency). Everyone is on leave/in admin limbo while the DOGE kids do whatever and lock people out of their emails. Already-awarded federal grants (that's how I get paid) for museums and libraries are now being terminated early via executive order. Museums are already closing (to be fair it has been bad for decades) and a lot of large and delicate fossil material will need new homes with space and funding, which almost no one has. It's bad. I don't know what to do except to keep working and occasionally scream into the internet.
Not trying to be a bummer, but this is pretty much the only thing anyone at my job can think about right now. I can only speak for museums, but specimens need periodical tending or they will decay or get lost. Grant funding is how we do everything: it's how temporary workers get paid, how we get access to subscription-based software, and it's how we buy new label paper for cripes' sake. We are still fighting, but everyone is honestly loopy with stress all the time now. People should know what they are destroying.
The staff of the Institute of Museum and Library Services was placed on administrative leave Monday morning, following a meeting between IML

we got another good news roundup!
the fight is still on! don’t give up!
what do you mean elon musk did a nazi salute on live tv at the united states presidential inauguration twice and is now erasing the evidence off the internet by replacing the footage with the crowd cheering instead?
would be a shame if people reblogged this, wouldn’t it?
Okay a couple weeks ago I started this post trying to keep track of all the stuff going on in order to help remind us of everything that’s happened when the next election comes around. Well, because there’s just so much going on, I’ve realized trying to cram it all into one post isn’t going to work. So I’m going to do a new post every month and include links to the previous ones.
So here goes…
January 2025
February 2025
Donald Trump has enforced his tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. [x]
Donald Trump has put Mexico tariffs on hold for one month. [x]
Donald Trump allowed Elon Musk to begin dismantling USAID. [x]
Congress is voluntarily giving up its power and allowing Trump to make unilateral decisions. [x]
Darren Beattie has been made Under Secretary of State. [x]
Everything that Donald Trump has done so far lines up with Project 2025 [x]
The White House is drafting an executive order to eliminate the Department of Education [x]
Elon Musk, who nobody voted for or elected, has, essentially, hacked the government. [x]
Here’s a link to the Project 2025 Policy Agenda that Donald Trump claimed he didn’t know anything about.*
*He only claimed he didn’t know anything about it after it proved to be deeply unpopular with the general public.
Once again, please feel free to let me know about anything I’ve missed. With this era of constant news we live in, it can be easy to forget so let’s give our future selves a little help!
As we see a barrage of evil executive orders come in, they are not immediately enforceable and will takes months or years to implement.
That’s still not great, but don’t let these pile up to the point of hopelessness. Take a breath, and look community leaders who will fight it every step of the way.

I truely believe that instead of drawing conclusions from Ivanka Trump’s inauguration look to Wives in Gilead, we need to be comparing her looks to that of royalty. Ivanka dresses intentionally and loudly. Her desire to be seen as an icon is easy for a layman to pick up with her historical recreations.
But in highlighting the obvious narrative, we’re forgetting soft messaging, which is inherent to what Royal Watchers call fashion diplomacy. With these recallable looks for the big, news worthy, events it’s easy to look past the Trump family’s subtle return to tradition; and more scarily, their desire for permanence.
The Trump women’s descent into traditional fashion using statement gloves and hats is visual propositioning. When women’s hands are fashion, to be covered, where else does fabric go? Melania’s gloves in 2016 were a choice, most clearly represented when standing beside the First Lady of the previous administration. In wearing gloves to the 2016 election, Melania became the first First Lady to do so since the election of Richard Nixon. Don’t believe me? Look at the historical record, all women since Patricia in that red coat have removed their gloves before holding the bible for the president to swear his oath.
In 2025, what do we see? Gloves. Gloves that match and hats too.
While the gloves were off indoors, the hats remained on. Before you “mehmehHatHairmeh,” I want you to ask yourself, have you ever seen a representative of your country wearing a decorative hat? I’m not talking about religious or cultural garb; I’m talking about decadence. Visual representations of wealth disparity and class divide. No First Lady since Nancy Reagan (ring an alarm yet?) and before her, you guessed it, Pat Nixon has worn a hat or fascinator to the Inauguration of their husband.
I want you to think about that. And I mean really sit in it, because this is not the America that I was born into. It is not the America that most of our parents were raised in. This is not an American silhouette.
Is this not a visual representation of our money bagging past?
The one that our brothers and sisters fought, bled, and died to be rid of?
The one that JFK said goodbye to? And the class disparity, which still reigns over the British Empire Commonwealth?
Boy if THAT ain't prophetic :-/
For those who are wondering, she says in the TikTok as I'm in Canada and can still access the app:
"And remember kids, it was Trump who started all of this. And if he comes back on the 19 of January, saying that he is making sure that tiktok is not getting banned, coming from a German, this is exactly what a certain painter from 1933 did back then to get the sympathy of the masses.
"I beg you, I beg YOU, to not sympathize with him. This is all a plan, this is all, the only thing that they didn't consider was all of you marching over to Rednote. It TikTok stays because of Trump, this app will be run over by Republican propaganda. Fascist propaganda, the same as it happened back in 1933 in Germany. Our version was burning books, their version is deleting every information that is not serving their worldview.
"Please don't let history repeat itself.
"Sincerely, A German"
Food for thought
Yeah, this sort of stuff serves several purposes, including:
Confuse the masses as to what the actual law is
Get people to obey in advance
Demoralise the opposition
Signal intention to supporters
^^ I was thinking, like, "surely we all remember this from last time," but then I thought about it again, and realized that there are people who voted this year, who wouldn't even have been in their teens during the previous Trump rodeo.
So yeah, if you weren't following it last time, there will be a lot of Executive Orders that get walked back, struck down, or, once subjected to even mildly rigorous legal interpretation, turn out to have little or no effect.
When you see that Trump has signed an EO about something that seems drastic and scary, take a breath and wait a few hours, then see what the experts are saying about it.
Quick reminder that it's always morally correct to punch nazis.
