A list of the hanzi, pinyin, and their meanings for each character and their personal weapons, if applicable. I crosschecked with a character list on baidu, so they should all be there; let me know if I missed anyone, or if there is an error (especially the pinyin…I relied on a dictionary for these). I’ve left out a few things that would be spoilers or characters that haven’t been mentioned yet (mainly from the Wen clan, there are a few that aren’t listed here).

I don’t know much Chinese, so the meanings are drawn directly from the character list provided by the fan translators (ExR) or from an online dictionary (marked with an asterisk *).

Also: I apologize for the long post! It doesn’t matter on mobile, but the third tone represented by the little caron, or wedge, above the vowel doesn’t look good on my theme. I’ve kept it without a read more so you can view it in the dash instead.

Wèi Yīng [魏婴], Wèi WúXiàn [魏无羡], YíLíng LǎoZǔ (Patriarch) [夷陵老祖]

魏 – wèi, a surname containing the character 鬼 meaning ‘ghost’

婴 – yīng, ‘infant’

无羡 – wúxiàn ‘to have no envy’ (無 ‘not, nothing, none’ is the traditional ver. of 无)

夷陵 – yílíng, a place; according to a dictionary, it means ‘barbarian mound’, a real place that was destroyed by the Qin; currently the city of Yichang in Hubei

随便 – suíbiàn ‘whatever’

陈情 – chénqíng, the * dictionaries say it means ‘to explain in full detail a situation or opinion’

兰陵 – * not sure what 兰 is referring to, but the dictionary says it’s either a surname or a part of the name of certain flowers like the orchid or lily magnolia; 陵 líng apparently means a ‘mound, hill or mountain’; (edit: Lanling is also a county in Shandong, Linyi)

金 – jīn is ‘gold’

Mèng Yáo [孟瑶], Jīn GuāngYáo [金光瑶], LiǎnFāng-Zūn [敛芳尊]

孟 – mèng is a surname that can also mean ‘first month of a season’, according to the dictionary; *take this with a grain of salt, I don’t know if it was chosen for the meaning or just as a name

瑶 – yáo, see below

光瑶 – guāng means ‘light’, yáo according to the translators would be ‘a radiant piece of jade’

薛 – xuē, * a surname which can mean… ‘wormwood like grass‘ according to the dictionary

洋 – yáng * can be ‘ocean’ or ‘vast’

成美 – chéng * meaning ‘to accomplish, complete’; měi * meaning ‘beautiful, satisfactory’ according to the dictionary (I’m not sure where this name is mentioned, but he does seem to have been given it at some point when he was part of the Jin clan?)

Did Wei WuXian really fail at achieving the impossible and, hence, was persecuted by the world?

Fandom:

Wei WuXian’s demonic cultivation and his methods are failed experiments.

Novel:

“It seemed like that, although the cultivation world hated him on the surface, they still used the inventions that he came up with.”

- GDC, Chapter 3: Aggression—Part One, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

“The cultivation world had a strict definition for the category of “ferocious ghosts”…The criterion was set by Wei WuXian himself, and it was probably still being used.”

- GDC, Chapter 5: Aggression—Part Three, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

“He didn’t expect that, after so many years had passed, he was still alive in the cultivators’ conversations.”

These are just a few instances from the early chapters of the novel. The entire story is a testament to how Wei WuXian and his inventions revolutionised the cultivation world. His influence is so profound that even 13 years after his passing, his name and his creations continue to be a part of cultivators' conversations.

Prototypes, Not Failed Experiments

Yes, his inventions are not flawless. And let’s assume he failed in accomplishing what he set out to do (though I don’t think he failed). They cannot be called failed experiments, but more like prototypes that would have been improved over time if he had survived.

What’s the difference?

Failed prototypes signify design or application flaws. They mean the underlying theory is correct, but things got weird when they put it into practice. But failed experiments mean the evidence does not support the original hypothesis. For instance, the Compass of Evil. It was not a failed invention, considering it works well except in complex situations. It’s canon that it was the first version, a prototype, and Wei WuXian was in the middle of improvising it when the sects attacked.

We must not forget that Wei WuXian was only 22 at the time of his death. Yet, he managed to achieve such remarkable feats despite the relentless persecution from society. To label his innovations as failed experiments is not just inaccurate, but it also undermines his genius and efforts.

Wei WuXian Did Not Invent Demonic Cultivation

He invented Ghost Cultivation. The name of the novel is a sarcastic take on how society viewed his cultivation, even getting the name wrong. It shows the hypocrisy and ignorance of the cultivation world, when they called it evil without knowing or understanding it. I got involved with the fandom discourse only last year, and still, I have seen fans explain the difference between the two so many times. I don't know how many times this was said over the years. The thing that people still needed to be reminded of says a lot more about them than about Wei WuXian.

Wei WuXian’s Cultivation Isn't a Failed Experiment

Let’s recall his initial question:

“Spiritual energy is energy; resentful energy is energy as well…If so, why can’t resentful energy also be used by humans?”

- GDC, Chapter 14: Refinement—Part Four, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

Is Wei WuXian’s hypothesis wrong? Is resentful energy unusable by humans under any circumstances?

No. Because if it was wrong, Wei WuXian wouldn’t have survived burial mounds, forget about becoming a major player in the Sunshot Campaign. No, I don’t live in delusions that Wei WuXian was the only one responsible for the success of the campaign. The takeaway from the whole Sunshot campaign arc was never that Wei WuXian secured the victory. It was always that when people finally came together, forgoing their differences for a common cause, they could achieve the impossible, like shooting the sun. It had always been stated how stupid it was to fight the behemoth that was the QiShanWen. That’s the reason its atrocities remain unchallenged for so long. But it was finally defeated when all the sects united. Hence, all the major characters made contributions to the war efforts. But at the same time, we couldn’t deny that Wei WuXian was one of the major contributors in the campaign. It had been stated by many characters—including his most significant detractor, Jin GuangShan—more than once how Wei WuXian was the reason for YunmengJiang’s contributions in the war.

“Have you heard what they say outside? Things like how during the Sunshot Campaign the victories of the YunmengJiang Sect were all because of Wei wuXian alone—what nonsense!”

- GDC, Chapter 73: Recklessness—Part Two, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

Yes, he added "what nonsense” to show his disagreement with the opinions. But it was more to show himself as Jiang Cheng’s well-wisher than his actual views. Because if the opinions were completely nonsense, they wouldn’t have such an impact on Jiang Cheng. It is only because there was some truth to it that it struck Jiang Cheng’s insecurity and inferiority complex, and it could drive a wedge between Wei WuXian and him.

Hence, Wei WuXian proved that resentful energy can be put to use by humans.

That’s why Lan QiRen never denied when Wei WuXian had stated that question in the class. Because nobody had ever worked with resentful energy before, and nobody could state accurately that it could not be used. Lan QiRen—the scholar from a sect who viewed knowledge above everything else—though angered, did not dismiss the concept as impossible. Because only ignorant people discard innovative ideas, calling it ‘letting imaginations fly away’. People who value knowledge know every innovation is rooted in imagination. Every scientific experiment starts with an almost impossible-seeming idea. Only when people take the impossible and make it possible do inventions happen. There is nothing pragmatic or rational about dismissing things as impossible. Calling this a pragmatic approach is like terming science and the pursuit of knowledge as impractical. (Besides, Yunmeng Jiang’s motto wasn’t about achieving impossible ideals; it was more about actual principles of karma, not the Western nonsense. I will explain it in another post specific to it.)

Hence, the next question Lan QiRen asked was the progression of that idea—its practical application.

“He spoke harshly, ‘Then, let me ask you again! How do you make sure that the resentful energy only listens to you and does not harm others?’

Wei WuXian ducked while speaking, ‘I haven’t thought of it yet.’”

But he did think of a method in the burial mounds during the direst moment of his life. When he was stuck in a literal hell and needed to accomplish the impossible to survive. He invented a new form of cultivation, using music to control the resentful energy. He made an instrument, ChenQing, to accomplish the task. And he was successful in controlling the energy. If you are coming from only watching “The Untamed”, then it is excusable if you think he was not in control and was a danger to himself and others. Anybody who has read the novel knows he was entirely in control.

Did Wei WuXian Lose Control of His Cultivation in the QiongQi Path?

No. Jin ZiXuan’s death was not a result of Wei WuXian losing control of his cultivation, but more of losing control of the situation. The entire time, Wen Ning was following his exact command.

“…Wen Ning recognized Jin ZiXuan as an ‘enemy’ when he attacked, carrying out the order of ‘exterminate’ without a second thought.”

- GDC, Chapter 76: Nightfall—Part One, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

Wei WuXian called it a loss of control, not because he’s an unreliable narrator, but because he's the rare protagonist who actually takes responsibility for his actions. We can take that situation as Wei WuXian holding a loaded gun and Jin ZiXuan trying to disarm him, but the gun going off during the scuffle. In such situation, it was not failure of markmanship of the shooter, but failure of controlling the situation. Similarly, there was a loss of control when Wen Ning killed Jin ZiXuan. But the loss occurred more from the messed-up situation than Wei WuXian’s failure to control Wen Ning. It doesn't change the fact that Wen Ning was completely under Wei WuXian’s control. It is established in canon that no one can control Wen Ning except Wei WuXian, and that’s not from lack of trying, actually, years of trying.

When He Actually Lost Control

The only time he lost control was when the fierce corpse attacked Jiang YanLi, irrespective of Wei WuXian’s repeated command to stop. And of course, after Jiang YanLi’s death, he lost control. But then he was so out of his mind in grief of losing the only person who loved him unconditionally after his parents’ death, and it is very ridiculous to expect him to be in control. After all, with all his genius, he was only a boy barely outgrown his teenage years. It was more of losing control of his power due to grief and trauma than the failure of his technique to control resentful energy.

Wei WuXian had already said the same to Lan WangJi.

“As long as nothing happens to me, nothing will happen to him either.”

- GDC, Chapter 75: Distance—Part Two, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

And before you claim his stubborn proclamation to Lan WangJi that nothing would happen to him as arrogance or delusion or ignorance. Let me tell you, it was nothing but a desperate attempt to bring some semblance of positivity or control to a hopeless situation.

Wei WuXian Wasn’t Persecuted by the Cultivation World Because He Failed

The situation, in fact, was reversed. He was persecuted because he succeeded. Lan QiRen preluded this during their argument.

“Lan QiRen raged, ‘If you thought of it, the cultivation world would not allow your existence! Get out!”

- GDC, Chapter 14: Refinement—Part Four, Exiled Rebels Scanlations.

Jin GuangShan wasn’t after Yin Tiger Tally because it was a failed experiment; he was after it because it was a successful one, because of the immense power it gave to the person controlling it. The whole “it is too dangerous to be possessed by Wei WuXian” was nothing but propaganda to get it from him. Wei WuXian wasn’t afraid to call him out in front of all, and that’s why he became public enemy no.1, not because he failed in controlling resentful energy and posed an actual danger to society. Wen Remnants’ rescue and protection, Jin ZiXuan’s death, are all excuses to attack him because he dared to challenge the status quo. Because he wouldn’t tolerate corruption and greed like others, but would speak out against it. Because the leaders of the cultivation world couldn’t control him.

“… At best, you’re the untamed hero; at worst, you offend people wherever you go. Unless all those whom you’ve offended lived their lives safely, as soon as something happened to them or someone did something to them, the first person they suspect would be you and the first person they seek revenge on would also you. And this is something you have no control over…

… You, on the other hand, had just rebuilt Lotus Pier and behind you was the YiLing Patriarch, Wei WuXian, the danger of whom was immeasurable. Do you think the other sects would like to see a young sect leader who was so advantaged?…”

Wei WuXian was persecuted not because he tried to achieve the impossible and failed. Because he succeeded, and that made him, Jiang Cheng, and the YunmengJiang Sect too powerful to be tolerated. Because it was not acceptable for a ‘son of a servant’ to hold so much power. Because Wei WuXian’s personality was like his cooking, he wouldn’t lower the spice level to make himself palatable for the gentry. The only way he would have been tolerated was by making himself a doormat on whom anyone can walk, as Jin Guangyao did, with a smiling face. Even then, Jin GuangYao had to resort to mass murder to get any actual respect and position. But Wei WuXian’s morals and self-esteem were too high to succumb to that.

Wei WuXian’s Cause of Death Wasn’t His Weapon Turning Against Him or His Method Failing

Wei WuXian died due to the backlash from destroying the Yin Tiger Tally. It was not a failure of method or a loss of control. It was a deliberate move. It was his refusal to let the nuke equivalent of the MDZS universe fall into Jin GuangShan’s hands, even to the last moment of his life. Even though Xue Yang recreated the Tally for the Jin, it didn’t have the powers of the original. Imagine the devastation they could have caused if they had the original Tally, considering the horror they caused with the counterfeit one. How many Yi cities would have turned into graveyards; how many older women would have lived an undead life unaware of their death? This didn’t happen because Wei WuXian stood against Jin's power grab till the last breath. Even his horrific death was a choice he took to stay true to its morals. Yin Tiger Tally was the only invention he regretted, and he made sure to rectify his mistake.

So, no, Wei WuXian did not face persecution because he failed to achieve the impossible. In fact, he did accomplish the impossible in some way. The success of the golden core transfer and the invention of an entirely new form of cultivation are examples. Saving Wen Remnants was never about attaining impossible goals. It was about doing the right thing, irrespective of failure or success in the endeavour. He was persecuted because he did not let the crowd dictate his morals, not because he was not pragmatic enough. Pragmatism, as far as I know, doesn't mean letting people die because it's almost impossible to save them. If it is, then I hope there are fewer pragmatic people in the world. Ignoring the socio-political situation and reducing it to not being pragmatic is an oversimplification of the plot. It is just a refusal to acknowledge the rampant corruption of the cultivation world in general, and the selfish actions of your favourite in particular. And it’s an absolutely normal fan behaviour to point it out.

I feel like people misunderstand the title of Mo Dao Zu Shi, or of what Wei Wuxian does as “demonic cultivation” (mo dao). It’s not. It is, however, what most people in canon THINK he’s doing

Mo dao messes with the cycle of reincarnation, which is why the Yiling Patriarch becomes so reviled. The term mo dao is actually used only ONCE in the novel - when Wei Wuxian notes that people called him “the grandmaster of demonic cultivation”

It uses living humans, extracts qi out of them, and involves the destruction of golden cores, brainwashing, and effectively vampiring living beings for the sake of power. It doesn’t use ambient resentment, it creates it by harming others.

The reason we’re continuously told (by people who know nothing of Wei Wuxian’s path) that he’s at risk of going insane is because that’s what mo dao does. It warps the mind and body because the source of resentment is within the user

Wei Wuxian calls his cultivation “the ghostly path” or “ghost cultivation” (gui dao). Hell, the only other person shown to match his expertise on the subject - Xue Yang - also calls it gui dao. Xue Yang !! He’d be delighted to call his actions demonic !! If he’s insisting on calling it “ghostly”, then that tells us that the difference matters

So what is gui dao ? First of all, we know that it doesn’t mind-control people as a baseline - that’s why Wei Wuxian ended up dying the first go around. We know that it utilises pre-existing resentful energy in the world to direct the dead

We know, also, that it requires a certain level of understanding of the dead. One of the spells Wei Wuxian creates is literally named Empathy.

We know that the power source is usually external (the Burial Mounds, the Stygian Tiger Seal), and that it, most importantly, doesn’t create demons. It creates ghosts and fierce corpses. And because of this, it likely doesn’t prevent reincarnation.

Why is the distinction important ? Because the former is what mo dao does. It creates mo.

We’re told the difference - very intentionally - in one of the earliest parts of the story, when Lan Qiren asks Wei Wuxian the difference between gui (ghosts) and mo (demons) and yao, and gets the correct answer

There’s foreshadowing littered all across the earlier chapters, actually. I might make a post on that some day

Wei Wuxian is one of the best characters in mdzs. He is, unfortunately, also one of the most misunderstood characters in mdzs. I will be compiling all of his fanon tropes so that readers will be able to differentiate the canon from fanon.

It is so so so good, the way this author understood and wrote WWX just the way he is in the novel so well, with all his genius and intelligence and resilience and quirky humour, it's a breath of fresh air. The slow burn is veryyyyy slow, but this fics leans more into practical and realistic what-ifs of WWX waking up in the modern world, and the romance is more in the background. Still very sweet and wonderfully written!

Of course also featuring the juniors, aka the ducklings. I promise their earnestness, sincerity and clumsy righteousness all the while being dumb and snarky and absolutely hilarious teenagers, will have you laughing and giggling hysterically the whole time.

The well thought out character analysis as well the long research in the notes are such a bonus. I was so enraptured all throughout the reading experience and learned so much about the intricacies of the modern and historical Chinese languages, as well as the thorniness of the past Chinese dynasties and so much more.

Also the way this author manages to analyse and understand the characters and original story in a way very few do is astounding to me. Seriously, this should be The MDZS Fic Of The Fandom.

One day this fandom will have a reckoning on how it likes to blame Jin Xixuan's death on Wei Wuxian—whether by maliciousness or a "loss of control"—while ignoring the fact that Jin Zixuan died because he lunged at Wei Wuxian with a drawn sword because he was angry that Wei Wuxian told him that he doesn't trust him after he refused to tell Wei Wuxian whether or not he was a part of the ambush his cousin set up after Wei Wuxian told him to keep his distance from him after he told Wei Wuxian to stop defending himself against an ambush that he showed up to and was plainly told was put together to kill Wei Wuxian after he had already been bodily pushing Wei Wuxian around to protect his cousin. But all of that is supposed to be forgiven and forgotten because the reason he wanted Wei Wuxian to ignore all logic and put his life in danger was for Jiang Yanli's temporary happiness? Lol. Lmao even.

Returning to this cause I really need y’all to understand how Wei Wuxian’s reaction was not in the wrong or at fault and exactly how depraved the Jin Clan is.

While mdzs isn’t set during a specific historical time period and thus is loose on many customs and traditions, one thing mxtx carries over is that inviting a person into your home makes them untouchable for as long as they are your guest. Jin Zixun took advantage of the fact that Wei Wuxian was invited to the one month celebration to ambush him, but he intentionally ambushes him on the way to the celebration, not at the celebration. This is because more than just ruining the mood, to attack an invited guest in their own home would shatter the Jin Clan’s reputation and turn them into social pariah. After all, who would want to be the guest of a clan known for slaughtering guests—let alone become their ally! Jin Zixuan says as much to his cousin when he shows up, cause even though the ambush didn’t happen at Koi Tower, it still was a very socially unacceptable, reputation-ruining move by a close relative who supposedly cares about him:

Jin ZiXuan, “You clearly know that I’m not that kind of person! He might not necessarily be the one who cursed you with Hundred Holes either. Why are you so rash? I was the one who invited Wei WuXian to A-Ling’s full-month celebration anyways. If this is the way you do things, where does that leave me? Where does it leave my wife?”

Nevermind just the ambush, this exploitation of the host-guest social contract is very reminiscent of the QishanWen “inviting” the clan heirs and junior disciples to their clan in order to mistreat them. The audience and characters all know that the disciples are really hostages, but as long as the veneer of “hospitality” was maintained, none of the clans were willing to mobilize against the QishanWen, even after their children almost died. After all, they didn’t die, so who’s to say that the QishanWen weren’t simply bad hosts who were, nonetheless, still bound by the traditional rules of conduct keeping them in check? Only through Wei Wuxian's and Lan Wangji's actions is the facade of the host-guest social contract maintained long enough for the two to be rescued and recuperate in their homes before the Sunshot Campaign began. Had a single heir actually died, would the cultivation world have still sat on their hands for those few weeks until the QishanWen marched on Lotus Pier?

Madam Yu laughed bitterly, “You do remember, but there’s no use if you simply remember. Wei Ying, he really can’t take it unless he stirs up some trouble, can he? If I had known, I would’ve made him stay in Lotus Pier properly and not go outside. Could Wen Chao really have dared to do anything to the two young masters of the GusuLan Sect and the LanlingJin Sect? Even if he did, it’d mean that they ran out of luck. Since when was it your turn to play the hero?”

Because of this, Wei Wuxian reacting as he did to the Qiongqi Path ambush was entirely justified, as he was a guest besieged by his own hosts. That idiot Jin Zixuan rushes in to downplay the gravity of the situation in favor of keeping up appearances for his wife’s sake is what made the entire situation unsalvageable. Why should the ambushed guest follow the host into his home after being attacked along his route? Why should Wei Wuxian maintain the Jin Clan’s image of gracious hosts just because Jin Zixuan wants to make his wife happy? Why does Jin Zixuan think he—and his clan—is above reproach and that he is justified in seizing Wei Wuxian’s cooperation by force? Jin Zixuan was always going to die, not simply because of his own impulsive actions or his arrogant belief in his clan’s right to do whatever they want with no consequences but also because, narratively, his death was needed to clear a way for the Jin Clan to escape this social taboo unscathed.

Imagine what would have happened had Jin Zixuan not died in the ambush: he would have to go back and explain to his wife why her little brother never showed up. He would likely demand to know why tf his father agreed to an ambush on his son’s one month celebration. The news would get out that the Jin Clan uses invitations to ambush guests. How many banquets would they be able to host after this? The nameless cultivators may not be brave enough to completely break away from the Jin Clan’s sphere of influence, but they most certainly would never let their guards down enough to be used as pawns anymore. But because Jin Zixuan died and Wei Wuxian didn’t, Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao are able to spin their actions of plotting against a guest into one of a guest plotting them, as a guest attacking their host is just as taboo as a host attacking their guest. Thus the Jin Clan successfully use Jin Zixuan’s death to secure their place as leaders of the cultivation world through the justification of "righteous fury."

This victory could only be achieved by the blood of their heir, and what does Jin Guangshan do in the aftermath while his wife and daughter-in-law sit mourning over his son’s still-unburied coffin? He hosts another banquet.

Y'all this is a piece of history right here. Every single time you see a reference to a "shovel talk" in fic, defined here as "someone threatening harm to a potential romantic partner of a friend/loved one," it's referencing this scene. This scene specifically. Everywhere else that is not fannish internet, that interaction is referred to a "shotgun talk," referencing the father threatening a daughter's boyfriend with a shotgun. This scene gave a lot of people a chance to reframe that interaction in terms of a protective friend rather than a possessive father, which for a lot of obvious reasons resonated with people a whole fucking lot, and it immediately spread like wildfire into fannish and then general internet lexicon. I've seen people try and backronym it into an extension of the shotgun talk, as in, "I've got a shotgun and a shovel to bury you with," but I've asked a lot of rednecks from a lot of different necks of the woods and no one has ever encountered that variant in brickspace life. It's all Buffy, babey. This shit is linguistic history in the making.

The Tragedy of Qijiu; Analysis

aka: reason why Yue Qingyuan and Shen Jiu make me ugly sob

1. the things left unsaid

the most poignant part of the novel for this ship is this line: "Too late. It was already too late! Shen Jiu was no longer here. He would never again be able to hear Yue Qingyuan’s words, never ever.”

and again, in the character notes: "He (sy) is no longer the intended recipient of this favor. Yue Qingyuan will have to find his own closure, as the person he looks for behind the new Shen Qingqiu’s eyes will no longer return.”

READ THAT SHIT. READ IT. ISNT IT TRAGIC???

ygy and sj spent their whole lives since they were little kids with unspoken words between them, longing glances, misunderstandings and hidden affections. you know who else does that? THE MAIN COUPLE OF SCUMS VILLAIN: luo binghe and shen yuan.

 EXCEPT

we get to watch them fix their misunderstanding. we get to watch binghe realize he was never hated for his heritage. we get to watch shen yuan realize he is saved from retribution for sins he never committed. this is a privilege qijiu never gets.

the worst part? they almost get it.

because yue qingyuan does, in (what he believes are) his final moments, try to communicate. it's the beautiful cliche "im dying so ill tell you everything" except its not beautiful because the person he needs to tell is GONE. he was gone the whole time and YUE QINGYUAN DOESNT EVEN KNOW:

like yeah, the person you love dying is tragic. but its even more tragic that they were so distant he cannot even tell shen jiu and shen yuan apart. he will never know his beloved is gone from the world; he is not even awarded the privilege to mourn

and he can NEVER know. sy is literally prohibited by the system from telling him. so happens is:

4. yue qingyuan fails shen jiu at each and every opportunity

can you IMAGINE? he got into cultivation to save his xiao jiu from the qiu manor. he failed. he became the leader of the sect to be a man shen jiu could one day respect. shen never respects him (even shen yuan canonically is like "dude wtf? this is the sect leader; shen jiu treats him so disrespectfullt?") . yue qingyuan tries to protect shen jiu from luo binghe - fails. tried to save him after receiving his two legs in the mail but failed and died trying. tries to save shen yuan - shows up too late and shen yuan gets poisoned without a cure. tries to take on debt for shen yuan - shen yuan wins the spirit stones. tries to fight mobei jun - fails and shen jiu falls into depression because he lost binghe due to his failure. tried to lock up a heavenly demon - succeeded! but that ultimately led to the birth of the even stronger heavenly demon who goes on to torture his beloved for a decade.

yue qingyuan is a man in power without the power to succeed at the one thing he needs to.

conversely, shen jiu, a little slave with no name or power changed his live. when yqy needed him, shen jiu selflessly stepped in danger's way and saved him successfully. yqy never repays his debt even though he tries so hard.

and then his xiao jiu falls in love with the young demon boy who wreaks havoc and kidnaps him and kinda treats him like shit. he fails at earning shen jiu's love too.

5. yue qingyuan never finds out that shen jiu loved him.

shen yuan likely believed yue qingyuan abhorred him. what shen yuan feels for yue qingyuan is likely a mix of "you betrayed me so i must hate you + you hate me so in return i must hate you. but in reality if you were to look close i dont hate you at all. but ill act like i do because i must hate you."

yue qingyuan though? there was no question. his feelings for shen jiu were always love and shen jiu will never know that, so there will never be a chance for shen jiu to change his mind, to not think "you do not hate me so i do not have to hate you, you love me so i can love you"

this kinda ties into the "words left unsaid" point EXCEPT at least shen jiu gets one time where he finds out how yqy feels. yqy never ever in any universe finds out. he thinks shen jiu is determined to never call him qi-ge again.

6. but even when shen jiu gets to find out yue qingyuan loves him, it is the most tragic way of doing so

i want you to imagine:

you love this person. you trusted them and they betrayed you. you hate that they make you feel weak so you place distance between you two. they look down on you so you respond in turn, with harsh words and harsher actions.

and then they die a horrific death- stabbed by ten thousand arrows- to come save you.

you realize they never meant to betray you, never looked down on you.

you were so mean and distant for nothing.

you cannot say sorry. they are dead. it is your fault.

shen jiu so eagerly wrote that letter to yqy, not because he wanted to escape torture but because he was so confident yqy wouldnt come.

he didnt come last time, so why did he come now!?

they are the epitome of the childhood friends to lovers & "i loved you all along" trope. they have seen each other in every stage of their loves and still, in their convoluted way, loved each other even with all the tension between them

Yes it’s called the mammalian diving response and it’s also why doing face masks and taking a shower is soothing. Our amphibian ancestors used this mechanism to slow down the heartbeat and lower body temperature so as not to waste calories while swimming (which is very calorie intensive). It makes you feel safe because predators are less likely to get you in water than on land. The fish brain is alive and well in all of us.

I mean, I’m pretty sure Lin is supposed to represent what Chihiro’s future might be like if she accepted her role in the bath house and didn’t try to maintain her own identity and values. She’s not a bad person, but she’s hedonistic to exactly the extent that the bath house culture allows her to be as an employee and has no ambition beyond the system of favors, bribes, and petty intimidation between low-level workers. She’s traded her individuality and opportunity to better herself for the security of predictable exploitation and she doesn’t seem to regret it.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Lin is the only other major character who looks human throughout the movie - I’m not certain she started out human, but I suspect she may have, and may have fully traded away her humanity. I do think it’s significant that she, unlike Chihiro and Haku, doesn’t reclaim her name at the end of the story.

She doesn’t want her independence or identity back. Her purpose is to eat and look pretty.

Alternate interpretation: I always thought Lin meant to be a comforting presence.

She’s the first bathhouse worker who is kind to Chihiro, helping her get her clothes and navigate her first work assignment and sneak food. One of the core themes of Spirited Away is finding your footing in a new and terrifying place, and Lin and Haku are key allies in Chihiro’s struggle to gain the skills and self-assurance she needs in order to thrive.

Lin’s human appearance helps us and Chihiro feel more sympathetic towards her . Her familiarity with the system of favors and bribes makes her appealing as a role model who can demystify Chihiro’s new environment for her. Unlike the more inhuman occupants of the bathhouse, Lin looks like someone Chihiro could become in the future, and that’s a good thing! She’s living proof that the bathhouse is not such a monstrous and scary place. Because Lin treats the bathhouse like home, Chihiro begins to see it as a home, too.

And once Chihiro starts to think of the bathhouse as her territory, she realizes that she has agency in this place as well. She uses its rules to her own advantage to free Haku and herself.

And that is the point of Chihiro’s journey in Spirited Away: it’s a metaphor for starting over in a new place and overcoming fear of the unfamiliar. After all, the frame story is Chihiro’s family moving to a new city. At the beginning of the movie, Chihiro is despondent, unhappy to be leaving her old friends behind. By the end, after making it through the spirit world, she’s taking a much more active role in helping her parents settle into their new home.

TLDR: Lin is there to be Chihiro’s friend.

These theories coexist really well, I think. Lin has accepted her place within this system, and that’s given her the confidence and experience to be a mentor for Chihiro. Because she knows the system, she can make things a little better for Chihiro.

Because Chihiro has a mentor and friend, she learns how to survive and even do well in the Bathhouse. It’s because of Lin that Chihiro is able to not accept her place within this system and instead fight back, and in the end to make things a little better for everyone.

There’s something there about community, and easing the path for those who come after you. Lin doesn’t regret her choices because they were the best choices she could make, and that’s okay. It’s not a tragedy. She got as far as she could get, and because she did, she’s there to help Chihiro get farther.

And isn’t that what we’re all here for, in the end? To go as far as we can, and then give a hand up to those coming after us? It’s never a tragedy when children can go farther than their mentors ever could. That’s a triumph.
