in my mind palace this happened sometime in nates insurance years where some stupid rogue stole or destroyed something owned by the Wayne trust or whatever and bruce had to put out an insurance claim because even though he dgaf about that thing people would think that he sold it himself and was too scared he'd be caught to try and double dip. So he made a claim and they sent nate out and nate was IMMEDIATELY suspicious that it was Bruce Actual Fucking Wayne he was talking to because usually this shit is handled by some employee of someone elses employee in cases with people this rich and he has to fight to talk to anyone else and so hes IMMEDIATELY convinced bruce stole it and is trying to double dip because Why Else Would He Be This Weird. meanwhile bruce is both being brucie and enjoying nates weird mind games bc he finds this guys closure rate fascinating like this guy is a fr detective without being a stupid cop thats kind of hot and is wondering if he can actually get his insurance guy to sleep with him and they spend a fun (in bruces opinion) and frustrating (in nates opinion) day together and bruce strikes out on getting laid and nate strikes out on getting evidence and bruce wayne has been nates white whale ever since. I can actually think of an alternative explanation: small print press. Heâd put out orders for various rare books with the traveling merchants whoâd come through town, and every so often theyâd turn up with one and heâd set about printing a hundred copies or so, then sell the fresh new copies to merchants heading towards various university towns like Avignon, Grenoble, Toulouse, etc. Heâd likely keep a couple copies of each book for himself, generating a library, and might wind up with all sorts of books he couldnât profitably make copies of to sell to the universities, like fairy tales.
If thatâs his business model, then Belle might be the closest thing heâd have to an apprentice, since we can see heâs getting on in age and might have nobody else to even consider passing the business along to when he slips the mortal coil. As one final thought, her dad is an inventor, and might be the booksellerâs only actual local customer, which might also explain the relationship. Her dad would occasionally want certain types of books on natural philosophy, and the bookseller would be the one with contacts who could procure them.
