Liberals who have a real investment in pretending that there are 0 instances wherein broadly appreciated individual rights have been curtailed or violated directly by COVID-related restrictions really highlight the incredible power of ideology to make you reject your own stated and perhaps even deeply held values when the application of them would benefit people you see as an out group. When the government wants to crack down on anti American sentiment in universities you can be for free speech, and when a university professor offends you you can be against not simply what they said but their ability to say it in public. When the government wants to impose religious sentiment into policy such that it will impact people who do not consent to living under religious law you can oppose the use of unsubstantiated beliefs to control non-religious adults, and when it is in service of a civil rights movement you can make entirely unsubstantiated claims about the suicide rates of a group of vulnerable individuals. When government officials lie in public about election results you can be for integrity and honesty and evidence, and when government officials read major but totally unsubstantiated allegations into the Congressional record you can be okay with officials making mistakes in the heat of the moment. Moreover, ideology and maybe more powerfully one's sense of ideological belonging can drive one to lie, or to correct existing inconsistencies. When you hear tell that a feminist said something you abhorrent on the internet you can simply lie about having read it and so can everyone around you such that asking for evidence of the abhorrent statement strikes you as an attack on your entire ideological group. When their guy says it's time to get tough on China with regard to trade it's jingoistic and dangerous, and when your guy keeps his economic framework in place and actively ramps up military shows of force against China it's defending democracy.
If there are two things I think the pandemic and its impact on the Overton window wrt various issues, the state of general cultural discourse, the ability of individuals to hold respectful private discourse even, one is that principals are not to be bent lightly or without great reservation, and lies are not to be told and are to be immediately shut down whenever you see them. Because any principal on which you bend may come back to bite you, and when you enable a culture wherein people can tell lies and be celebrated for doing so it is only a matter of time before someone lies about you, or compells you to tell a lie in order to avoid ostracization.
i don’t stream music. when i want to hear a song i simply create a perfect rendition of it in my head using my substantial brain power. and i add pan flute to every song.

Sorry I consume media normally and don’t go insane whenever people criticize what I watch because I simply do not care that much
In case you haven’t noticed, I'm normal. I’m a normal person. I fit in. And I love fitting in. Have you ever seen me defending stupid tv shows on tumblr dot com? No. That's because i am normal.
just to clarify i don't have critical thinking and if i support a fictional murderer that means i also condone murder irl
I fucking hate James Tissot’s paintings because in ALL OF THEM there is ALWAYS someone staring right at you, but it’s not always immediately visible. You just feel watched by this mf. Sometimes the little shit is right there at the centre, but others the bastard is just gazing from the distance, it is CREEPY, my guys
STOP STARING AT ME, THIS IS DISCONCERTING AS FUCK
I think this is hilarious. We’ve been caught.

makes eye contact in interviews but it's the kubrick stare
the meaning of life is summed up in the story elmer bendiner tells about how when he was a pilot the second world war, his plane was hit with a barrage of anti-aircraft fire from the nazi forces but the crew survived. and how everyone was saying it was a miracle until they investigated the shells that got in the fuselage and found there was no explosive charges in any of them. in one they found a note scribbled in czech, written by the person who had been forced to manufacture the shells, and it just said ‘this is all we can do for you now’.
every time i see someone acting tough online about how harm reduction is pointless and in some convoluted way worse than doing nothing i think about that person in some soul-destroying nazi factory in occupied czechoslovakia removing all of the explosive charges from their anti-aircraft shells and writing a note that they must have known would probably never be read, just to say ‘this is all we can do for you, and we’re going to do it’. they are trying to make us kill you and we refuse. i do think that maybe it’s all going to be okay.
