in silence you deglove, the patient now stable. once you step out of the trauma room, you place your hand under the hand sanitizer dispenser. you rub the gel on the palms of your hands, cassie doing the same. then, with a hand hovering over the small of your back, cassie guides you to the break room. when you pass the nursesâ station, she plucks your water bottle from the counter, already knowing which is yours. as you enter the break room, cassie ushers you to the table. the hand on your back withdraws so cassie can pull out a seat for you.
âsit,â she tells you. you do, and then she hands you your water bottle. the room is empty, just you and cassie.
you take a sip of the ice cold water, needing to hydrate. your eyes then flicker up to cassie. âthanks,â you breathe out, your shaky voice barely above a whisper.
âno problem,â cassie replies as she presses her lips together in a smile, her dimples poking through. âiâm gonna go,â she says, pointing behind her to the door with her thumb.
âoh, yeah, iâll be there in a minute.â
âno worries,â cassie says, taking a step back. her eyes linger on you for a few more seconds before she turns around completely and walks away. her hand slides onto the door handle, but she hesitates. cassie looks over her shoulder at you, a coy smile growing on her face. âby the way,â she starts, your eyes shooting up to look at her from across the room, âitâs cute how pink and flustered you get.â your eyes widen, your head nearly dropping out of your ass. you feel yourself shrinking into your seat, your shoulders slugging forward, completely mortified right now. âmaybe next time iâll, uh, have to turn down robby and tell him to help you out,â cassie tells you, her tone somewhat teasing. âalthough, it is really cute,â cassie says, feigning contemplation. âmy date last night never got even half as tongue tied as you do when i talk to you.â she admires your speechless state for a couple moments, unconsciously licking her lips. she then gives you a nod and says cheerfully, âsee ya!â with a wink before turning around and leaving you alone in the break room.
did cassie mckay just flirt with you? and has she been deliberately making you turn into an embarrassing, nervous pile of mush this whole time? all because she thinks youâre cute?
