You sure that ainât a portal?
Heres the thing you gotta understand about statistics.Â
âIncreases your chances by 80%â does not mean âthere is now an 80% chanceâ.Â
If your chances were previously 10%, your chances are now 18%, not 90%.Â
if your chances were roughly 1%, theyâre now just slightly less than 2%.Â
thats how that works.Â
Wow I donât understand math at all
âif you have a baby after 35, the chance of deformities goes up by 100%â is a line I hear alot.
It goes up from .5% to 1%
To simplify: Itâs the percent amount of the current factor.
In the starting example: 10% is the factor. 80% of 10 is 8, and then add together (increase by that): 10 + 8 = 18. Thus an 80% increase of 10% is 18%.
Similarly: 1% is the factor, itâs really the same as 10, just the decimal stepped over (10.0%, 1.00% // I know that isnât really how numbers work, Iâm just doing this for the visual). And thus, 80% of 1% then adding it on would be basically 1.8%
And finally, .5%. 100% of .5 is just that, âpoint 5âČ, or a half a percent. Two halves make a whole, and thus a single percent or â1%â.
Pretty easy to be honest⊠Though, itâs easy to get caught up in the statement and forget that, sometimes even when you know better.
Practical, every day use of maths: Not being dooped by dipshit marketing teams
theyâve been playing the same goddamn M&Ms christmas commercial for the past 8 years
he does exist!
they do exist
oohhâŠ.*faints*
eight years what the fuck are you talking about that commerical is from 19-goddamn-96

itâs that time of the year again. time to bring back this reminder.
okay but Campbellâs is still playing that one chicken noodle snowman one, right? And that one I remember from an even EARLIER age
from 1993. thats 22 years ago
this commercial has been playing for 22 years.Â
thank you for reminding us all that the holiday ads never really change
okay but
this oneâs from 1989
26 years

when you touch a Bad Textureâą and have to scrub at ur hands until the feeling is gone
When your teeth scrape against something they donât like and your entire body tries to escape the upper atmosphere.
When your nails drag across an Unpleasant Thing so your arms stop working from the elbows down and your ears ring.
when something nearby makes a Bad Sound and youâre actively trying to get onto the astral plane in your corporeal form
