Caffeinated Protein Shakes. Yes.
Well, its spring, which means I actually WANT to drink shakes again! In the fall and winter I just want coffee and hot food all the time and I will just look at cold drinks and go “Nu uh, not in this weather. It’s -40 degrees outside.”
But I discovered something delicious yesterday! I have a problem in the morning still wanting coffee (for the caffeine) but ALSO wanting a shake instead of my “warm winter meal” of a fried egg and toast (I know, it sounds horrible doesn’t it? But it’s just quick and easy.). I don’t want to be going to the bathroom every 15 minutes at work, so that’s kind of out of the question. I know a lot of people make coffee shakes, but ehhhhh. That means brewing coffee, cooling it, and then making my shake. And I haven’t found an instant coffee that doesn’t make me gag (and my coffee-shop-owning mother would beat me if she found instant coffee in my cupboards...). Then I was thinking about those little Crystal Light Energy packets (well, I get the generic brand ones) and said to myself “Just do it. Just put your protein powder in with the drink packet. Do it.” I did and IT IS SURPRISINGLY TASTY! I was worried I would hate the feel of the protein powder without almond milk and some pudding powder (my typical shake) but the very slight grittiness doesn’t bother me at all!
So my shake volume actually doubles (one of those packets is for 16oz of water, and when I make shakes with almond milk it’s only 8oz) AND I save those 50 calories from the almond milk and pudding. That just means I can add more tasty flax and chia seeds. PLUS 120mg of caffeine!!!
