It's getting easier...so don't stop the momentum
Hey y'all--I am still working my way through the first segment of Tracy's Hipcentric. Have been alternating days of the workout only with days of running/cardio, only. Along with making some huge changes in my diet, I've officially lost 5 lbs. in a month without being a perfect eater or a perfect Tracy acolyte. But each time that I get down on the mat to do my Day 1-10 workout, it goes something like this:
Get through arm segment no problem--easy
Get through ab segment no problem--not difficult but I feel it working and I like it.
Get to right leg segment --since buying this program, I've usually had to stop in between each different move circuit and taken a rest (ie. cry in pain and wonder why I bought this dang program in the first place). Now that I have taken up doing this workout more consistently again, I have been challenging myself to do the first two move circuits without stopping, then taking a break, doing the third, taking a break, and doing the fourth. Today was the first time that I did the ENTIRE right leg segment without stopping!!!! Made me want to finally be consistent and do the mat workout the way I'm supposed to, 6 days in a row! It's interesting to see how much I need to feel like a success in order to be motivated to do more.
Get to left leg segment--my left leg is weaker than my right as it tires out more quickly, I find. Have not been able to do this leg's exercises without taking breaks, but can do the first two without stopping and even went into the third before taking a break today. YES!
So maybe I will be up at 6:15am again tomorrow to do my Day 2 (again) but to make it count. Every time I stop, or stay out late, or get distracted and then don't follow up with my workout, I lose my momentum. There is a saying: how you do one thing is how you do everything. I see how I have this pattern in my life with my study habits, etc. If I can figure out why I move that way (maybe it has something to do with being a Cancer crab? Crabs move sideways.) then it will affect change in all areas of my life. So that is the real question. What is it about stopping momentum that is attractive to me?
Powerful song.
10 Things About Me That No One Knows (And Probably Don't Care To Know, But Too Bad For Them)
Hi--thought I would post something totally random and fun for a change (besides posting a song). You know how they publish these kinds of lists in magazines about celebrities, "25 things you don't know about me", etc. ? I figure if they can do it and try to sound just like regular people (ie. boring), so can I! So here are 10 random things about me that I just realized no one in the whole universe knows and probably could care less about, but here they are nonetheless:
1. I like reading magazines back to front.
2. I hate it when people have birds as pets in their home.
3. I remember the first and last names of all of my elementary school friends and I still miss them sometimes. (my mom does too--now that's a little weird)
4. I dream about becoming a billionaire one day. (people already know that I dream about becoming a millionaire, but not a BILLIONAIRE)
5. I'd like to go to The Maldives for my honeymoon. (But first I have to get married. Ok, first I have to get engaged. Actually, first I have to get a boyfriend. Ha ha)
6. I wish I had slept with my boyfriend right out of high school instead of waiting for the one I slept with in college. He was a much nicer guy.
7. If I could afford it and I thought it would benefit her in the long-term, I'd bring my mom to live with me in New York.
8. Over the past 6 months, I've bought 90% of my work wardrobe second-hand off of eBay. It's all I've been able to afford at my temp office job. I'm sure most of my friends would be horrified if they knew this. I hated thrift shopping when I was younger as it meant that I would be forced to wear tons of dated, out-of-style clothing my grandmother had picked up that smelled funny. Surprisingly enough, I've found some great stuff and not spent more than $25 on each piece, usually even less. Looks like granny taught me something after all.
9. I really, really want to have a baby by the time I'm 40. Okay, 41.
10. Sometimes, I think being a vampire could be cool. I mean, who wouldn't want to live forever and get to have sex with everyone AND have wild parties every night with other vampires in the movies like Catherine Deneuve or Sookie or Tom Cruise? And there are no fat vampires. I rest my case.
So there you have it, folks. My list of unimportant metamarthaca-trivia. It was actually challenging to think of things that absolutely no one on the face of the earth knew about me. Guess the cat's out of the bag now though! Hope that none of these come back to haunt me, but just in case they do, I'm sure they'll turn it into an episode of American Horror Story or Girls or Grey's Anatomy.
Have a great weekend--I took the work week off from exercising as my social life took precedence, but I have got to put some time in tomorrow and Sunday. More posts soon--
No matter what comes up, we can learn new ways of being with it.

REVELATIONS - REAPING THE POSITIVE FROM THE NEGATIVE (ie.I SAY YES! TO ME!)
So...I got home from work last night and did 30 mins of yoga. And then I woke up at 6am today and did my hour Tracy Anderson workout. Day 1.
About a year and a half ago, I bought this program: http://tracyandersonmethod.com/metamorphosis/
It's a 90-day program, sort of like a P90x for women and they have four variations on it depending on your body type (ie., where you tend to gain weight. I'm "Hipcentric"). And I have tried a few times to start it, but have never made it past doing it 3-4 days in a row before stopping the entire program. I did a lot of research on it before buying it and I know it works (even if you don't do her diet plan, which I think is too extreme, but if I eat healthy, I think it will still be effective from what I've read. Other women do this too.)
I'm feeling so good now, and I'm going to make it a big personal goal for myself to do the ENTIRE program. I'm not going to give up my momentum, I'm not going to think about it or complain to myself or feel sorry for myself b/c my muscles are sore--I'm just going to DO IT. I'm not going to TRY anymore. How can I coach others if I am not owning this part for myself? How can I express strong confidence and not have this part of my life worked out? I have to be in shape, mentally, emotionally and physically. I think I'm doing pretty good with the first two, now I need to tackle the last one. I have been sticking to a better eating plan as I work with my nutrition coaches--it's been a week and a half since I had any dairy and almost no gluten. I've also cut way back on the amount of animal protein I take in and upped my leafy green vegetables to twice a day (I put fresh spinach in my protein shakes at breakfast to get that extra serving in--you don't even taste it and I get all the benefits of the spinach mixed with my berries and protein powder! YES!).
And I have a confession to make and a story to share...I have been wanting to do all of this for awhile, but the exercise part has been really tough for me for a long time. I used to be super athletic and toned and after injuring myself years ago through dance class, my workout habits suffered. For awhile I just couldn't work out at all due to injuring my IT band and had to go through a lot of physical therapy, massage and chiropractic. It was really frustrating to me to have to start up again and then have to stop abruptly due to the injury becoming irritated again. It was a constant stop/start cycle so I just gave up. But I finally met a chiropractor who was more holistically minded and knew just what to do for my body and after working with him for two years, he helped get my leg back to 80-90%. I even finally went back to some dance classes this past winter and didn't have a problem.
So for awhile now, I've had no excuse except for my fear holding me back and my resistance. I've been so scared of being a failure again at starting to exercise, or putting in the hard work and not getting the reward I want from it--or the reward that I've been "promised." I have had this kind of thinking pattern about a few things throughout my life. And I was thinking about this last night after doing my yoga workout and realized that this pattern was put into place long ago by growing up with my dad. He would promise me rewards in exchange for me working hard in school on subjects that were tough for me, but then when push came to shove, he would never deliver. Or he would make me needle him for months and work "harder" then finally get him to give me what was promised but he would always flip it and make it seem like I was being greedy or asking for too much or something I didn't deserve. CRAZY MAKING! And I saw in that instant how this programming has been holding me back in this area of my life. But it's crazy b/c it's not me with my father or anyone else--it's me with MYSELF! I'm treating myself like my father treated me and I'm reacting to myself the way I did to my father. Total and complete WOW moment. I had to share.
On top of that, right before I started working out, something a bit disturbing to me happened. I have been going out on some internet dates here and there, have gone out on 4 so far. In any case, one was with this investment banker-divorced guy who lives in the neighborhood next to mine. He is 43 and has three kids (gasp). He was kind of rude to me during the date (ie., was 20 mins late, made some judgmental comments about my career path, didn't walk me home, etc.) But he had asked me to dinner for a second date so I said yes to try to be flexible (everyone can have an "off" day). But then I decided to cancel the day before and asked if we could reschedule because I realized I had packed too much into that day already and would have been exhausted that night. I also was honestly feeling a bit uncomfortable about seeing him again. In any case, he seemed to have gotten a bit offended by my asking for a rain-check and was slightly rude to me again in his response. So I decided then and there to trust my gut and that it would not be a good idea to go out with him again at all.
Since then this guy has been texting me here and there over the past month and a half trying to get my attention again, just sending me random texts with links to music he is working on (he is an amateur DJ) and making comments about my online profile? So weird. I have never answered him. Until yesterday. He sent me a text with another link to one of his songs and I decided to write back and ask him politely to please stop texting me and to delete my number. The guy wrote me back this:
"Is this the crazy, depressed, underachiever, looking for a winner...with looks alone?"
I have to say it stunned me and hurt me more than I thought it would. It was like this man pressed every button I have about my life when I'm feeling down and I couldn't believe that this person would talk to me this way, especially after only meeting me once on a blind date that was innocuous, in my opinion.
So I then wrote, "Please delete my number and do not text me again or I will report you to the police for harassment."
And he answered, "You are a waste of space. Think about that :-) now I will delete your number, crazy."
I was kind of speechless. I am not used to being spoken to that way by anyone but it brought me back to my ex and how he used to always put me down. And it brought me back even more to my father. Now this guy obviously has major issues and I don't care about him at all, but I do care what others think of me and that little girl inside really cared and it really punched me in the gut. His words about being a waste of space and an underachiever really hit me hard. And to suggest that there's nothing more to me than my looks, that was also something that my ex used to focus on, so that hurt too. It really hurt. All of my insecurities about being a failure in life, in my work, in my finances, in my relationships got hit by those statements and the pain was so great that it gave me the final leverage I needed to wake up this morning and exercise. I thought, where do I feel I'm underachieving in my life? Where can I truly do more? Where am I holding back where I know I'm capable of giving and growing instead of staying small? And the exercise thing was there, shining clear as the sun in my face. I thought, I'll be damned if I let this loser guy make any kind of statement like that about me and give him any reason to be even a little right. So I woke up this morning, determined, and I'm going to do it again tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and follow through.
It's amazing how the bad statements get replayed in our minds so much more easily and often than the good ones. I'm still wrestling with these negative statements today even though the logical side of my brain knows that they are the words of an immature man who is obviously hurting over things unrelated to me in his life-- but it's amazing for me to see in action how right Tony Robbins' words are when he talks about our relationship to pain and pleasure and how they create leverage for us in our lives on a constant basis.
Amen to that
“In spiritual life there is no room for compromise. Awakening is not negotiable; we cannot bargain to hold on to things that please us while relinquishing things that do not matter to us. A lukewarm yearning for awakening is not enough to sustain us through the difficulties involved in letting go. It is important to understand that anything that can be lost was never truly ours, anything that we deeply cling to only imprisons us.”
Jack Kornfield (via nirvikalpa)
Now that's deep.
August miracles...
So, in keeping with my post on gratitude, here's what I've noticed showing up in August so far:
1. I have committed myself to cutting out dairy from my diet and so far, have been successful. Time to step up my nutritional game...
2. I've piggybacked on the no-dairy train by cutting down the amount of gluten products I eat. Made a vegan, veggie pizza for dinner last night. Had it with two glasses of wine, but hey, I'm making progress. Better than having two regular slices with a soda and a slice of chocolate mousse cake for dessert (um, yes, I have done this. More than once. Yikes.)
3. I've also cut back on the amount of meat I'm eating. I don't eat much to begin with but now I'm eating less. More veggies and veggie protein sources as opposed to chicken and fish. Working on the pork (I loves me some bacon!).
4. Those first 4 things are pretty much miraculous for me to be and stay committed to. Keeping myself honest by posting it here.
5. I bought a lottery ticket the other day. You can congratulate me now as the drawing is tonight! :)
6. I am meeting my old boss for a drink tomorrow. Due to circumstances, never thought that would happen.
7. I've called my mother 2-3x more than I have in ages and I am really enjoying our talks. She is a really sweet person. And who gets tired of talking to someone who is absolutely THRILLED each time you call? Huge ego boost there. I suggest it highly. Call your moms, yo.
8. I'm contextualizing what's happening with my current work situation as a way for me to train in becoming a leader in my life. That interpretation is working for me in a big way.
9. And last, but not least: I found a way to attend my next Tony Robbins workshop in December, Date with Destiny. it's pretty expensive, but I wanted to so badly that I found a way to make it happen. Hopefully it can teach me how to create that type of desire force into everything it is that I do again, the way I used to when I was a kid.
I just want to say that I LOVE fact that she has serious curves and flaunts it. WAY TO GO ON THAT BOOTY, BABY! From one booty girl to another! WORK IT! :)

Gratitude
I need to focus on having more gratitude. It truly does feed the soul.
For all of you out there who have been out of work; who have not known from where or when the next paycheck is going to come; who have held off on buying groceries for the week and stretched out the ones from last week to make due; who have been down to the last .50 cents in your bank account (or even less); who have stayed working at jobs they hate or feel are beneath their qualifications but have stayed because at least it is better than having no job at all--I've been there and I know how you feel. And I can't claim to have all the answers as to how to get through all of those tough times. They are not fun. They feel awful. They make you forget what it's like to feel good in the world and sometimes you might even tear up during the day when you have a few minutes to sit in your solitude and feel the pain of not having all that you want or all that you've had in the past.
It's ok. You've gotta' remember that this too shall pass. And that every moment is an opportunity to learn something about this thing we call life. And that at every moment, there is someone else in the world having less than you, struggling more than you, lacking more than you. So that even if you are struggling, and I mean it's been hard to wake up in the mornings to go to that dang job (have been here a lot lately), or to get in your car or get online to go fill out yet another job application after already filling out hundreds (have been there too)--start small and be grateful for the most basic thing of all that is available to us in every moment: the breath. With every breath in, feel "Thank you" and with every breath out, feel "Thank you." This is what I try to do sometimes. I forget, of course, but when I remember, I am surprised at how much calmer I feel in just five minutes and how much my inner anxiety has become abated. I'm not saying that I feel like jumping around doing a happyhappy-joyjoy dance after doing this, or that I feel like I'm floating away on an airy Calgon-take-me-away cloud either. Far from it. But I do think that when there seems to be so much out of our control on the outside, it's easy to start to feel out of control on the inside--and the two combined can make you feel like chaos is where you live.
It's challenging to "count your blessings" when you are in the middle of some chaos. It's simply not always possible. Maybe if you were the Buddha or Louise Hay or the ghost of Audrey Hepburn, it wouldn't be difficult to do this. However, for the rest of us that haven't reached that sainthoodly kind of status YET--in the meantime it's easier to stop and just pay attention to your breath, because it's already there, waiting with never-ending patience for you to notice it. And from this new place of simple gratitude that gets created from your noticing, you will have a new space to just be. No job, no money, no bank accounts, no bitchy roommates, no junk food, no health food, no scales, no broken air conditioners, no dating websites, no housecleaning, no grocery shopping---nothing but you remains. And the breath. This is pure and cannot be denied. Find solace and relief in this place. From here comes the creation of something new. We can never give up hope.
...So...while I was getting ready to go to my "temp" job this morning, this song came on my Spotify and I have been listening to it ever since. It's been awhile since I heard it and I forgot how powerful it is. I wonder if I could cover it somehow in a jazzy/loungey style. I think I'm gonna' try. I think it's important for a lot of girls and women especially to hear this song. For those that wouldn't give Lil Wayne an ear, ever (which I can understand, he's not usually up there on my playlist either and I'm not into the criminal stuff, but I can't deny how talented he is as a rapper and as a creative artist for sure) they would probably really be able to get into this song if it were re-packaged. Love it. Give it a listen.
i actually very much believe in faking it until you make it.
This is something a mentor of mine has been saying to me, and now me to myself.
More June Miracles
5. I got accepted into the NYFA program that I applied to. The one that is going to help me set up my own vocal coaching business. I'm so scared and glad at the same time, I could cry or eat a huge piece of chocolate all day long. Maybe I will do both at the same time and then take a huge nap.
6. I had an interview for a job I really want yesterday. It's actually doing something important, which is more than I can say I've done at this temp job (twiddlingthumbsalldaylong).
7. I'm almost at my birthday and not hating myself because of my age. (hint: it just keeps increasing in digits)
8. I actually have a keyboard player that cares about the kind of music I want to do and is committed to working with me. Hallelujah!
9. I had a protein shake for breakfast. Finally getting back on track.
If you've ever heard this song played live, you know how magical it is. The recording doesn't do it justice.
