⛪️: I Talked to a Catholic Canon Lawyer About Sanders Sides
An Essay on SVSR/POF’s Perspectives on Catholic Morality
It’s as the title says, I promise it’s not clickbait. If you’re familiar with my fanfiction “the smallest church” or have read my previous posts about Patton and his Catholic foundations, you may already know that I know a thing or two about Catholic theology more than the average person. For context, I’ve lived in the Philippines my whole life, and the schools I’ve gone to, from highschool to college, have required their students to attend subjects about Catholic Theology, morality, etc.
Even if I don’t necessarily identify as Catholic anymore, I still pick up on a lot of Sanders Sides’ religious themes because of my upbringing. In fact, it surprises me a lot of people do not find the series as an exploration of one’s own Catholic trauma, because the basic structure of the sides (the “Light” Sides vs the “Dark” Sides) is a result from internalized black-and-white thinking, something most Catholics unconsciously believe in.
Patton, in general, is a fascinating, well-thought out character that encompasses the misinterpretation of Catholicism’s morals and principles. This is explored in the episode SVS.R/POF, wherein Patton was badgered on his different takes on various moral dilemmas. Because of this, I’ve decided to contact one of my professors in college to sit down and talk about Patton: what Patton gets right, and what Patton gets wrong.
More than anything, Patton, like Thomas, is a victim of what my professor calls “midwit-ery”. Instead of being taught to read into Catholic code in a more thoughtful manner, Catholics like Thomas are merely taught to listen to what is being told to him, no questions asked. So, take this essay not as an attack on Patton or Thomas, but rather a place to better understand why these misinterpretations of Catholic code happen in the first place, and how they manifest externally.
(TW's: Religious discussion, Catholic guilt and trauma, discussions of oppression, racism, and misogyny, discussions of self-esteem issues)
Virgil choosing to wear purple after he's been accepted has been complete redefined for me after the newest episode. What do you mean Virgil had the choice to redefine himself however he wanted after he left the dark sides and he chose to define himself by the color that symbolized his own happiness.
And that's why Janus and Remus are so surprised when they see Virgil's new outfit. Virgil, closed off, emotionally reserved, completely miserable Virgil, letting the world see his emotions so openly.
Virgil you are not beating the joy and love allegations.
In the big 2025
It is 2017. I wake up to see a new sander sides episode. I scream.
It is 2025. I wake up to see a new sander sides episode. I scream.
*through gritted teeth* the world is GOOD. people are kind. Humans are NOT inherently selfish. you will make it through this year. recovery is possible. people you don't know yet will love you. You are going to do things you can't even imagine right now. You are going to read a rlly good book. You are going to eat some rlly good food. You are going to experience joy again. Things can get better. Situations can change. You can choose to be kinder. The world can change for the better.
I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"
My little brother insisted if I was going to post about him, he wanted a cut of the "profits". When I explained to him that Tumblr isn't monetized, and is pretty pointless, he and my older brother pointed out that he'd still be bringing me "fame and notoriety" if the post got "big". So we agreed, if the post hit 10k notes, which seemed extremely farfetched and silly at the time, I'd take my little brother out for sushi (his favorite food) and let him eat as much as he wants.
I guess God wanted the little robot to enjoy some sushi 🍣 🥲
Take a nap kindly old man
I am gently taking your hands and begging you, BEGGING YOU, to understand that humans are not inherently harmful to the planet. We are animals who are part of the ecosystem. We belong here. This is our home. We belong here. You belong here. Yes, you belong here.
I guess hot take but I never understood why Spotify is so popular. Its like, the absolute worst music app of all time. Its hardly even functional. The ads are absurdly long and frequent, searching for songs is a pain in the ass. You have to PAY to skip ahead in the Playlist?
This is absolute hell, why does ANYONE use it? And why has it become the defacto music site? Why is it just something that everyone uses? I literally cant use the fucking thing, It has a worse search function than tumblr! You are better off getting your music in any other way. Even youtube is better. Sheeesh!
I'm sorry there are ads? Free users can't skip songs? Why is anybody using that?
Yea you get like 3 ads before 30 mins of uninterrupted music (supposedly, sometimes it doesnt do that, most times actually)
Free users can skip songs but only 5 per hour iirc, they also tried to do this thing where you could only view the lyrics of a song (on mobile only this was a mobile only problem) 3 times a MONTH but then everyone absolutely slaughtered them over it so they rolled it back
Unfortunately theres not a whole lotta alternatives, Pandora has a really small pool of music I dont think they've updated that thing in like a decade, YT Music/YT in general is, well, y'know.
One thing I rly like ab the Fish in a Birdcage singer guy is that hes got a website where you can judt listen to roughly ab 40 of his songs for free and theyre all like neatly sorted all nice (i dont know when it was last updated unfortunately)
I just listen to mp3s on my phone.
I only use it cause I dont pay for premium, my brother does. Plus I dont actually know where to get mp3s a lot of the time.
Easy places to find music that you can play as an mp3 on your own computer that Spotify can't take from you or fuck with:
A lot of artists will have their music on Bandcamp, often very reasonably priced or even free. This should generally be your first place to look.
Youtube is a great place to find both very popular and somewhat rare music. A lot of preservationists use youtube to distribute the music they're trying to preserve. Pretty much anything that's ever made it to radio will also be here, often multiple times. You can download and convert the files.
The Internet Archive is another good place to find art rescued from death by media preservationists, including music. Many preservationists will keep active torrents of their collections here to circulate the tapes.
If you still own a device capable of playing CDs, physical music shops still exist. Shocking but true. You can find instructions for ripping and digitising CDs and tapes online. (If you still own CDs or tapes, you should do this as a backup, because they don't last forever.)
Check if your favourite artist has a website where they will sell you music directly. Many do, or will at least link to somewhere that you can get the music.
There's always the high seas, which I won't link for obvious reasons.
If you're using a less-than-legitimate way to obtain the music and not paying for it, and stealing from artists bothers you, sending them a few bucks directly before you download all their stuff will do more for them than all your Spotify listens ever did. Many modern artists will have a way for you to do this online, though the older the band is the lower your chances.
to add on to the Bandcamp shoutout, they periodically run Bandcamp Fridays where they waive their share of the revenue split. if you buy a single track for a dollar on a Bandcamp Friday that's got the same worth to the artist as a good 300 spotify streams
over and over again
I wish I knew Batfamily better. Like, all my knowledge comes from fanfics, incorrect quotes, and Tumblr analyses of the characters. And that sucks because I love Batman and I love found family. It cannot be overstated how much I love both of those. And to an extent, I know Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian. I’ve read some of their stuff and filled in the gaps with Wikis and YouTube videos, but—and this is unfortunate—I don’t know nearly enough about Stephanie, Cass, and Duke. And that sucks straight dooky because they all seem so interesting.
I thought I was fine before but I’ve been reading a lot of Superbat lately (that Superman movie—what more can I say?) so I wanna know more
So… like… any YT videos I should watch that’ll catch me up to speed?
I would recommend reading the comics to know more about these characters!! However, I know that's not always people's cup of tea, so here are a mix of comic and non-comic resources for each of them!

A lot of videos and wiki pages may contain errors, so I highly recommend reading their stories! I hope this helps and you learn more about these wonderful characters <3

I’m seeing a lot of people saying this post changed their brain chemistry, and as a neuroscientist I wanted to say yes!!! Yes it does!
Wanting something requires dopamine signaling, but liking something doesn’t.
If you have a mental illness/disorder that affects dopamine, you might feel that you don’t want to do the things that you like. You do still like them. You will appreciate having done them.
Let your likes guide you.

Rewards are both ‘liked’ and ‘wanted’, and those two words seem almost interchangeable. However, the brain circuitry that mediates the psych
