Im not crying YOU ARE! 🥺🥺😭😭😭😭😍
Iroh: People work their entire lives to find spirits and access the spirit world. It has taken years of dedication and study for me to reach the small part of it that I’m able to find.
Sokka, who accidentally steered a canoe to where the Avatar had been frozen for a century and then fell in love with the moon and also spent 24 hours in the spirit world that one time and was the only one who the hallucinations flat-out spoke to in the magical swamp: what, like it’s hard?
oh, oh, oh, but i liiiiike this — you know that theory about how, Zuko, Katara, and Toph are each crazy-powerful, especially given their respective ages (like, Katara and Toph are literally unparalleled in their field despite being so young, and sure - in terms of Brute Force - Zuko isnt as strong as Azula, but he is unquestionably the better bender of the two of them, not only in his ability to redirect lightning - an insanely difficult thing to do - but also just in his overall understanding of the element of fire) and that the three of them are their respective element’s chosen champion; their element’s answer to the fact that the Avatar was absent for 100 years. That each element is trying to fill the vacuum left by an absent-Avatar, and they each have picked one champion to fill that void, and those champions are our three here. That the three of them together make three-quarters of an Avatar. That the world was trying to create balance by gifting extraordinary abilities to three non-Avatars, who - if they worked together - could maybe bring the balance that the Avatar was supposed to.
Well the couple of versions of that theory I’ve seen either don’t account for the Spirit element of the Avatar, or say that Iroh is the Spirit’s representation, which… works, I suppose, as he certainly has a great respect for and understanding of the spirits. But as OP says, he has to work very hard for any actual encounter with them. And it breaks pattern, because the others are all of a similar age to each other, whereas Iroh significantly older and also not a core member of the Gaang.
But Sokka —– Sokka.
Our boy Sokka just strolls into situations with Spirits on the regular. He finds himself tangled up in Spirit related bullshit all the time - which is hilarious, given how scientifically-minded he is and how disdainful he is towards “spirity nonsense,” and I confess I’ve always just seen it as that. Easy comic relief. Get the scientific guy tangled up in intangible, spirity shenanigans, how hilarious would that be. But what if it’s more than that?
No one else has just…. falls into Spirit shenanigans the way Sokka does, or has encounters with Spirits the way Sokka does. Even Aang objectively has a harder time getting in touch with Spirits than Sokka (unwittingly) does, and not only is Aang the actual Avatar, but he’s a monk. They're known for their spiritual enlightenment.
But Sokka just…… crashed straight into the Avatar’s ice-ball, and he not only fell in love with a girl who was part-Moon Spirit, but she fell in love with him too. Sokka was the one who spotted the Wan Shi Tong Library in the desert. You know - the literal domain of the Spirit of Knowledge. He’s the one who decided to go there, and then he just… found it. This library that’s so hard to find that many scholars believe it’s just a myth, he decided to find it and then he did. Just spotted it out in the desert. Just like that.
Sokka got kidnapped by Hei Bai and just…. chilled out in the Spirit World for a day. The Spirit hallucinations talked to him in the swamp – the only one of the Gaang who was actually spoken to by them. I feel like there’s other occasions, too, of Spirity Bullshit befalling Sokka, but I can’t remember them off the top of my head. But none of the others have this many interactions with Spirits, and certainly not accidentally. Aang has to seek them out; they don’t really just happen to him, not the way they Just Happen to Sokka.
So what if, what if, what if…. What if Sokka is the Spirits’ answer to the lack of an Avatar. What if Katara, Toph and Zuko represent their respective elements, and Sokka represents the Spirits. What if Sokka is the Gaang’s bridge to the Spirit World.
The best part of it all is how much Sokka would hate representing the spirits. He’s the meat and sarcasm man! He makes plans, uses his brain!! What’s this spirits mumbo-jumbo why is he in the middle of that? He’s a warrior, not a bridge!!
This is slander and Sokka will sue you
…As soon as he learns to sue.

ok so i screenshotted this moment because i thought it was pretty cool
the first time we get to see all four elements working together for a common enemy, blah blah blah, but i started laughing because
sokka’s fucking boomerang. sokka threw a fucking boomerang at princess azula, renowned lightning bender and heir-apparent to the throne of the fire nation.
and sokka threw a boomerang at her.
I said it once and i say it again.
Azula considered Sokka to be the biggest threat in this group and countered him first. What this picture miss is Sokka sanding nearby. All members of this group unleash their attack at same time, but Azula reacts to boomerang first. If you watch this part in slow motion, you could see that Sokka’s boomerang was the first thing that would hit Azula and may even incapacitate her making her unable to continue to fight. So she had to counter in first. She deflected it with well placed shoot.
Then and only then, when there is no immediate threat, she starts to create her blue fire wall to counter other elements.
Lets think about this. How hard should you have to throw something to make it move faster that any elemental attack? Either all elemental attacks are slow or you are pretty strong. That said nonbenders with good aim and strong hands could easily overpower benders if they timed it right.(Aang got captured by Yuan archers who are all nonbenders.) Azula knew of this and acted according to it. She is talented bender and you may think that she should enlist other benders to help her track and capture Zuko, Iroh, and later avatar, but instead she uses her nonbender friend to help her.
Even if you have no bending you can still fight… and win.
Let’s not forget that on the Day of Black Sun, Sokka was the one in charge and Azula was no idiot Azula knew that.
When Aang, Sokka, and Toph all confronted Azula, she proceeded to make them chase her and waste their time. Azula is not only talented, she’s sly and smart as hell. WHO WAS THE ONE WHO SAW THROUGH THAT BS CHASE?
Sokka.
NOT ONLY THAT but after Sokka explains to the Gaang that Azula is just baiting them, Azula actually verbally attacks Sokka. Not through fighting, but through words, knowing not only that an intelligent person like him could only be brought down with emotions BUT that Sokka was the leader and if she could get him the stay, Aang and Toph would follow his lead.
Azula knew Sokka was their strength and took him down. WOULD SHE DO THAT IF HE WASNT A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO HER!!??!
No. She wouldn’t waste her time and energy on someone she didn’t think was capable of actually getting in her way.
WHEN SHE GETS HER FIREBENDING BACK SHE HAS THE OPTION OF ATTACKING BADASS METAL BENDING TOPH AND THE FUCKING AVATAR WHO DOES SHE ATTACK?!?!
Azula never underestimated the power of non benders especially an intelligent one like Sokka. Sokka was a huge threat to fucking Azula on multiple occasions.
Remember that.
Look at this spot on fucking discourse. LOOK AT IT.
Just thought I’d drop this
into the debate as well, (instead of actually fighting him she backs off, and who blames her? Sokka’s club looks like it could shatter bones…).
Along with this:
Scenes with Azula confronting Sokka are few and far in between but they paint a pretty interesting picture, don’t they?
I mean, Azula’s friends/most trusted warriors were two non-benders. Mai was an expert with thrown weapons and Tai Lee was the only chi blocker shown in the first series, and she was able to take down half a groups of earth nation soldiers like that. Azula knows that non-benders are dangerous and she sees sokka for the genius he is
She’s knows she can take bending, she can redirect fire and she’s fought Katara a lot- but unlike Zuko she was probably never trained with weapons, she knows she has no defense to a sword or a club, and she knows that one of Ty Lee’s biggest advantage is that people underestimate her
Let me sum this up;
It doesn’t matter how much crazy magic bullshit you have, a sword to the face is a sword to the face.
My man Sokka getting the recognition he deserves
Sokka is one of the single most dangerous people in the entire series and it physically pains me that he so often gets relegated to the goofy non-bender in peoples minds. Sokka faces down some of the most powerful benders in the world without flinching. Even before he got his sword training and came into his own, even when he thought of himself as the useless member of the group, he was always the first one into the fray. He gets up again and again from shit that would make any normal person scream in mortal terror. His will and determination and stubborn refusal to quit, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, carried his team again and again and again. Sokka would drag himself from one end of the world to the other on two broken legs if it meant he could save just one person and I will physically fight anyone who badmouths him.
This is such an excellent post but I’d like to point out that the past tense of screenshot is screenshat.
Thank you for your time.
Seeing my boy Sokka get the recognition he deserves:
all the movies and tv shows over the next few years that will have to decide if they're canon compliant or a canon divergence no plague au
do y’all remember before direct messages tumblr had a dumbass ask limit of 10 per hour and communication was impossible until they introduced dumbass fan mail and we were basically sending telegraphs back in forth trying to communicate those were…dark times
Do y'all remember when they finally gave us direct messages and instead of doing it normally, they gave it to a few people at a time and we had to infect each other with it like a virus

did you know that a side effect of the covid vaccine is a heavier period?
guess who found that out by getting gettysburged yesterday?
like for real. the worst day of menstruation of my life. for people who know their menstrual cycle and haven’t gotten a vaccine yet, book it around your cycle if at all possible omg.
I got my first shot a week ago and the lead-up to my period was very strange. Normally I start getting cramps about half a day before I start bleeding, but I had that pre-period crampy feeling for three days this time followed by a pretty heavy period. I was pretty concerned until I realized it might have something to do with having just gotten the vaccine. I’m definitely pleased to see they’ve started collecting data about it.
If you have room to maneuver when scheduling your shot definitely keep your cycle in mind.
This happened to me this week. I went to the doctor and they didn’t tell me this, so here it is for folks who might need it.
I’m on Testosterone and haven’t had a period in 4 months and I had spotting about a week after my shot! it wasn’t much but it did surprise me! so heads up even if you don’t usually menstruate
edit: I got moderna and I’m between shots rn
So I’ve seen a lot of people unable to access the link to the survey from either the article or the tweet, and I thought I’d link it here.
Direct link to survey here.
They’re looking to collect information from anyone who menstruates and has had at least one dose of any of the Covid vaccines. If this is you, it would be awesome if you could take a few minutes to fill it out.
