also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.

I loved how Sailor Moon S leaned into the monsters being the result of science experiments combined with the sort of otherworldly force that every other season had.

Like it was magical girls but their foes were cooked up in a vial for Kaolinite or genetically engineered with heavy machinery for Eudial and Mimette. Then there the other Witches who used their own magic as well as science like nanomachines to strip flesh away or recreating Little Pet Shop of Horrors.

That was my first exposure to Anime and Sailor Moon. My gratitude will be eternal.

Yeah, I really vibe with the "mad scientist" theme the Death Busters have going on. Like you said, there's still magic, but it's heavily augmented by science.

Also, it could just be me, but I feel like the Death Busters are the villains that best encapsulate cosmic horror/Eldrich abominations. Chaos from the last arc is another big contender, but Shadow Galactica themselves don't really encapsulate that feeling the way the Death Busters do. Like, just LOOK at Pharaoh 90:

That is a straight-up Lovecraftian horror. This mf came out of a Junji Ito manga.

Like, even when Usagi comes back after defeating it, she has an "I have seen cosmic horrors beyond my comprehension" expression:

And Mistress 9's possession of Hotaru is terrifying, especially in the manga. You really get the sense that Hotaru is being overtaken by a malevolent force she can't understand.

just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.
