Shane getting criticized for not using pride tape and he’s caught on a mic later that week saying I didn’t realize it wasn’t the sucking dick that made me gay but the rainbow . Which is how he comes out.
@yearnalisms requested to bring this beautiful text post by @honeyybrii to gif form! all inspo credit to op of the text post! 💜 this tag is especially a good sum up of the set:
#it's genuinely so funny everytime ilya tries to teeheehaha around an insecurity #shane is like actually 🤓👆🏻
i think at a certain point shane would start getting seriously annoyed at the seemingly widespread idea that he's somehow supposed to be "controlling" ilya. maybe it starts off as a lighthearted joke with the way some of their friends will glance at him in anticipation when ilya says something particularly asshole-y like they expect him to tell ilya off. and at the beginning maybe shane somewhat gets it (but really though, he doesn't) because yeah it's his reputation in the league and maybe the rivalry plays a part in it too, especially for people who've never gotten to know him, but eventually, it just starts pissing him off
they're at the kingfisher after a game in new york and scott and some of the other admirals are there along with a majority of the cens and they're all having a good time. ilya and some random admirals player are chirping each other and ilya says something a little mean in the asshole way he does with a small tilt of his lips. and shane can suddenly feel eyes on him from scott and carter and troy and various other players, and for a second he doesn't get it. he doesn't get it, until all he does is snort in response, because well, it was true and also pretty funny and ilya really is the funniest person he knows, okay, and ilya nudges him with a small smile when he hears it, but then the stares slowly morph into something like confused gapes, and all of a sudden, he gets it. it's not the first time it happens and it definitely won't be the last, but shane starts noticing it a lot more and it continues to piss. him. the. fuck. off.
hayden giving him an expectant glance when ilya is half-yelling and groaning with a few cens in the bar at the soccer game on tv, like shane is for some reason gonna tell him to quiet down. scott giving him a quick side-eye when ilya chirps about his age on the ice, like shane is gonna tell him to stop; like he doesn't find the multiple layers to ilya's chirps to scott genuinely impressive, like he doesn't find it amusing. evan, though to his credit he was mostly joking, making a sly comment about shane needing to hold ilya back from fighting during a game, like shane would do that when ilya is well-fucking-aware of when to pick fights and when not to because he is the second-best hockey player in the league; like shane doesn't also find it unbearably hot when ilya has a little blood on his knuckles and dripping down the corner of his lips as he calls out mean little quips at the other team with a smirk on his face
because the thing about their relationship is that shane is undeniably attracted to ilya being an asshole. he thinks it's funny. it almost definitely also turns him on. and he likes when ilya is mean and smug and rowdy and a little shit. he likes when ilya is an asshole to him because that's their banter and their foreplay. he likes when ilya is an asshole to other people because he pretty much always thinks what ilya says is hilarious. (plus it's the fact that shane is also an asshole; it's just that ilya says it out loud more often than he does)
and so the thing about their relationship that, for some fucking reason, other people don't get is that shane, from the very beginning, has always and will continue to like when ilya is an asshole. and yes, they're married (shane also thinks some people seem to forget this, because why would shane marry ilya if he truly doesn't like ilya's personality. he thinks other people are a little stupid sometimes.) but they're also best friends and bond over being the best at what they do and how competitive they are and that they're both a little bitchy at times
long story short, i think that at some point during the first season of them playing together, all of the cens (and various other friends/players) eventually learn, as shane continues to not react the way they expect him to, that shane is THE biggest ilya enabler. he won't tell ilya off or nag him, but is actually probably standing a little off to the side with a tiny little smirk on his lips and hearts (and a little heat) in his eyes as he watches his husband
hang it in the louvre
pt 46/?
once shane gets over his shock they briefly talk logistics. when exactly ilya intends to go to the cottage. how long he'd like to stay. shane distractedly assures ilya he'll come up with an excuse for his parents as to why he suddenly won't be able to see them for an extended period of time. ilya feels slightly bad about it, but not too much. the hollanders have spent a lifetime with shane. ilya's only just found the conviction to ask for two weeks.
"okay," shane says, after their plan has taken crude shape. the details will come later, after they put their phones down. "okay," he repeats, firmer. then soft again, "I'll see you soon."
ilya feels his strings get cut. he leans against a wall. "see you soon, shane."
svetlana is back in the living room when ilya returns. she whips around on the couch, phone in hand, says, "what the fuck did scott hunter do when I left the room? for five minutes?"
it's a rhetorical question. the tv broadcast has—for now—moved onto highlights of the actual game, but she has her social media open on her phone. ilya makes a vague, loose gesture with his shoulder. "kissed his pretty boyfriend on the ice."
she swears quietly, engrossed again in her feed. "unbelievable. it's your fault I missed it, ilya. your niece's gift is in your suitcase," she adds distractedly. it is. the whale plushie sitting atop the stack of kids' novels sitting atop his serviceably folded clothes. not as neat as hollander's always are. ilya runs his thumb over the edge of his phone case.
"svetlana."
"mm."
"I will not be going to russia."
she breaks from her phone. frowns at him. "what do you mean?"
"I have to be somewhere else."
"where?"
"ottawa."
blinking green eyes. svetlana knows him better than anyone on this planet. he sees her gears turning. there is nothing on the surface of his life that would take him to a place like ottawa, nothing even on the deeper layers svetlana has almost exclusive access to. but there are few things about him that she is completely unaware of. what he has refused to lay bare for her she's deduced the shape of anyway, purely from the nature of his refusals. he sees her eyes flick to the tv. an ad for beer is playing. that's not what she's thinking of.
"is it for a person."
she says more than asks it. either way ilya responds, "yes."
"jane."
"yes."
she lifts her chin, slowly. "montreal jane who is from ottawa." they look at each other, ilya doesn't speak. eventually she shakes her head. "shane hollander, ilya? really?"
ilya sits. she laughs, incredulous, but also triumphant. she'll be annoyed at him later for abandoning her to his family on a moment's notice, but for now there is shane. and hunter. and hunter's surprise boyfriend. and shane. and shane. and shane.
i was thinking about nurse shane and security ilya doing what they can to have their schedules align to the same nights so they have a fairly decent routine together (as much as you can in a hospital)
then shane is asked/assigned to cover a day shift nurses maternity leave so their schedules are completely off. at work during opposite times, sleeping during opportune quality time at home, no overlapping breaks aside from catching each other shift changes.
they both do a lot of little things for each other during that time to make up for it like shane packing ilya lunches with cute notes and ilya leaving flowers or small surprises for shane to find when he gets home. they do of course get their off days when they do manage to overlap, but the sleep adjustments still make it difficult to fully enjoy it.
both are just desperately looking forward to being back on the same wake windows and working schedules, already planning on using vacation time in between to realign shane’s sleep schedule and just spend time together.

Yum I love this so much much baby ! In my reality (which I think is different from the US and maybe UK and idk about Canada lol) Shane is on a rotating roster, so he’s on a mix of 12hr days and nights through the month. Ilya would be a more set roster in my mind- so like he does a week of days then a week of nights alternating.
So let’s say it’s like ten or so months into being together, and they have found a way to make their rosters work most months with Shane’s always changing schedule and Ilya’s set one- some are a bit more spotty than others but they are seeing each other at least two or three times a week, outside of work at minimum. And it’s not always easy- sometimes it’s an hour and compromising naps and getting up early or staying up late, or swapping shifts but they make it work pretty well.
And really Shane’s place has kinda become their place now- (it’s not official, the living together in all ways but the actual asking of it and transfer of leases) - it’s closer to the hospital and Ilya has a roommate and Shane had shyly said one afternoon when Ilya had spoken about going home when Shane went to work that he liked knowing Ilya was there to come home to. He liked the idea of Ilya sleeping in his bed, even if Shane couldn’t be in it with him. And really- it gives them more time, coming home to the same place. (They haven’t laid it out together, in conversation, but Shane thinks Ilya must feel it too, the warmth of someone to come home to, of building something together, of not feeling so alone, of having a piece of life, something real and human and soft to come home to after long shifts in hospital walls and hospital chaos)
But then Shane is moved to a night shift roster for a month to cover a co worker who is off on workers compensation with an injury. Of course in divine timing Ilya is on three weeks of day shifts because they are installing new duress alarms and safety threat code responses across the building and they need extra support in hours for testing them.
It’s the first time they are stuck in complete opposite rosters, so they sit down and compare the days. At Shane’s instruction- he literally says they need to ‘have a meeting’ about it and then Ilya is too busy kissing Shane stupid over that, then fucking Shane stupid over that, for them to have a meeting about it until later that evening.
The meeting is very Formal, Shane in Ilya’s lap on the couch with his laptop open, calendar app pulled up that’s synced up to the app on his phone. Ilya is like valiantly trying not to get hard over Shane having a whole calendar set titled
Ilya 🧸💗 nestled there on the side between:
🏥 Work 🦋 Social life ✅ Reminders 🏋🏻 Gym 📌 Appointments 👟 Runs
The emojis alone (and the fact ilya got 2!) made it hard for Ilya to focus on the screen and not biting at Shane’s neck and ears and getting his hand down his sweats as they settled onto the couch. Shane had slapped Ilya’s hand away when he tried. Shane pulls up his roster online and Ilya logs into his on his phone, and Shane ads in his shifts first, then Ilya’s to his calendar. It leaves them with 3 days they are both off shift across the whole month, one of which will be taken by going to see Shane’s parents, time that Ilya values, having a family again, but it leaves them with less time alone than they barely have already.
"'We could only have one child,'' David said quietly. "We thought about adopting, but we decided in the end to just focus on making Shane the best person we could. I think we did an okay job of it.
Ilya smiled at the understatement.
"We couldn't be prouder of the man he's become,' David continued. "I don't have any Stanley Cup rings, but I have Shane.''
Chapter 39, The Long Game
....
It's Christmas of 1988.
There's one more present under the tree, and Yuna's eyes are dancing as she hands it to David. He opens it to find the tiniest pair of shoes he's ever seen.
"No. Really?" He's dizzy.
"Really," Yuna grins, and her eyes are shining with tears, and David loves that face more than anything. He hopes their baby looks just like her.
.....
It's a bitterly cold day in February of 1989 when David puts the shoes away. He pushes down all the anger of it's not fair, why us, why our baby. Yuna needs him.
The doctor had said you're young, you can try again.

DO NOT SAVE HIM he's exactly where he wants to be
stay.
There exists a video somewhere of Shane Hollander standing in the parking garage of Censplex wearing a backwards snapback and althetic shorts with an inseam that is probably quite literally just listed as 'slut' on the tag as he stares down whoever is holding the camera. In his hands is a beautiful and perfectly spherical watermelon. In his eyes there is nothing.
"You want me to do what?" he asks.
"Crush it," says Harris, too loud and close to the camera.
"Like, with my hands?"
"The challenge is to do it with your thighs."
Shane, his face and his watermelon do not move.
"It's for charity."
Smash cut to Shane sitting on a parking block, face bright red as he reroutes every bit of strength in his entire body towards his thighs. He is utterly silent, straining, and he only makes a sound when the watermelon finally gives up and crumples under the onslaught.
The sound he makes is high, long and deeply inappropriate. It also echoes throughout the entire parking garage for what seems to be a preternaturally long time.
"What the fuck is--" Ilya, who heard that shit through an open window all the way in the team offices, careens out of the propped-open side door just in time to see his husband bite a hunk of watermelon from the dripping remnants. There is juice on his thighs.
"Hey," Shane says, and then squints at the camera, deadpan once again. "I nominate Ilya Rozanov for the watermelon crushing challenge. Or whatever."
Harris, luckily, has a second melon handy.
